Re: Does an In-Service 401(k) Rollover make sense in my case?

Thanks for all the replies. Reading the SPD and asking more questions clarified that my Plan tracked "rolled-in" funds separately from "employee contributions" and "employer match". Such "rolled-in" funds [plus growth over time] can be rolled out of my Plan, r...

Does an In-Service 401(k) Rollover make sense in my case?

When I started working for my current employer 11 years ago, I rolled my former 401(k) into my new 401(k). I was not on board with Vanguard and Bogle and Indexing at that time. Since I've been enlightened, I strongly regret that decision and thought I'd just have to live with it. But just this week ...

Approximate VTSMX in 401(k) using VINIX + VSCIX?

I'm 46-years-old and trying to approximate Vanguard Target Retirement 2035 Fund (VTTHX) across all my investments. My current holdings are as follows: * 401(k) = VINIX - 66.8% * Roth IRA (funding to max amount each year) = VTIAX - 6.6% * Traditional IRA (not funding) = VTIAX - 5.3% = VBTLX - 14.7% =...

Re: Can I roll VA into Traditional IRA tax-free?

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. Clearly my ignorance abounds on this so I've got to go read my contract. I know that most what I put in it 7 years ago was from a defined contribution account from a former employer. So it may well be qualified. If it is, can I just roll it to traditional Ira tax...

Re: Tax implications on cashing out a Lump Sum Pension?

I've got a new Vanguard traditional Ira set up to receive the rollover. I was just doing the math to make sure I understand how it works. The only reason I even considered it was a) it is "free" money just given to me as opposed to investments I'd made and b) the immediate cash flow help i...

Tax implications on cashing out a Lump Sum Pension?

How do the taxes and penalties work on cashing out a pension? Here's my situation: * A former employer is making my vested pension available to me later this year. Its only $55K. Since its a pension, it is "free money" to me. * I owe $26K on my house and the payment is $600/month * As of F...

Can I roll VA into Traditional IRA tax-free?

I have a VA that comes out from under surrender fees this summer. I am planning to roll it into my new Vanguard Traditional "Rollover" IRA. I even called Vanguard to make sure a "Rollover" IRA could receive a VA...my inference was, of course, a tax-free rollover from VA to Tradit...

Re: Should I put 100% of 401(k) in VINIX?

OK, I'm finally back. I took the plunge and moved to 100% in VINIX in my 401(k). I plan to use Target Retirement 2035 Fund (VTTHX) in my new Traditional IRA. And I plan to shift my Roth from VTSAX to VTTHX also...or I may just try to mimic VTTHX in the Roth with Admiral Shares of the same funds in V...

Costs of Vanguard Target Retirement Funds?

Target Retirement Funds have a stated ER. And the funds in them have a stated ER. If I invest in a Target Retirement Fund do I pay the ER of both the Target fund and the funds that make it up? Or do I just pay the ER of the Target Fund?

Thanks!

Re: Should I put 100% of 401(k) in VINIX?

I personally would like to include international stocks, but many, including John Bogle and Warren Buffet, are perfectly happy owning only US stocks, so you would be in good company. Kevin Agreed. I've usually had a fair amount in international. I currently have 20% in AEPGX in my 401(k). So I'll w...

Re: Should I put 100% of 401(k) in VINIX?

I am a big fan of that fund. I think as long as you maintain your desired AA spread over your portfolio then go ahead and load up on VINIX. What do you see as your preferred AA? Forgive my ignorance but what is "AA"? Asset allocation? I've been pretty much all stock funds all the time. A ...

Should I put 100% of 401(k) in VINIX?

I would like Boglehead advice on my overall portfolio. I'm 45 years old so I have 17-20 more years to work and invest. My current portfolio is as follows: * 401(k) = ~ $400K * Variable Annuity = ~ $105K * Former Job Pension = ~ $55K * Vanguard Roth IRA = ~ $40K --------------------------------------...
