Re: 2017 Annual Conference Bogleheads Vegans & Vegetarians

Hi Robert, This is Colette -- I attended Bogleheads 2013 and 2014 and will be there again this year. It'll be good to see you again. Please count me in on a vegan dinner! Great if we could go where we did in 2013-14, but certainly open to any new options. Thanks for reaching out, and looking forward...

Re: Money software user & Chase Bank's discontinuance of its support

Thanks for your quick response and suggestions -- I don't use my Money s.w. for budgeting. Strictly for tracking, running reports at income tax time of charitable donations, medical bills, etc. Comes in handy when I want to know how long we've had major appliances, etc. if I can't put my hands on th...

Money software user & Chase Bank's discontinuance of its support

I'm a holdover Money s.w. user. I just learned this morning from Chase's tech team that Chase will no longer support Money in downloading checking account transactions to Money s.w. I found out about it when I ran into a "corrupted file" issue after attempting to download my Chase Amazon t...

I live in the Western suburbs, but would be willing to travel downtown or wherever. I last attended several years ago, but have retired now and have more time. No particular agenda items, although have interest in Roth conversions at this point.

Re: [How do I sell my funds during retirement?]

Since you're 63, there's one other thing to consider that I learned recently. There's income testing for Medicare at 65 that involves checking your income to determine if you’ll pay higher premiums. Social Security uses the most recent federal tax return the IRS provides to it, which is usually 2 ye...

Re: Checkwriting from IRA account for charitable contributions

Fido allows you to write a check on your eligible IRA account for QCD purposes. How to do I request a QCD from my Fidelity IRA? If you qualify, you have the following choices for requesting a QCD from your Fidelity IRA. Use the Withdrawals—IRA One-Time form (PDF) to request a QCD from your account....

Re: Checkwriting from IRA account for charitable contributions

My distribs. were to be from the sweep and then from the S-T Bd. Mkt. Index. I like the idea of simplifying further and prior to an e-mail/call, moving the amount for QCDs to the Prime M.M. But, even better, I like pshonore's copied advisory from Fido's website, which applies perfectly here: "I...

Re: Checkwriting from IRA account for charitable contributions

Cjon, I have been making QCDs out of my Vanguard IRAs for a number of years now. I have a very simple method that has worked very well for me and for my Flagship representative. Did ten of them back in late September and similar numbers in prior years. I make one list of the name of the charities (...

Re: Checkwriting from IRA account for charitable contributions

In order for Required Minimum Distributions from an IRA which are going to be contributed to a qualified charitable organization to be tax exempt you must follow the IRS rules explicitly. So far Vanguard has not created a way to expedite this process online so you must email your representative wit...

Checkwriting from IRA account for charitable contributions

In the past, my husband (79) took his RMDs from bank IRA CDs and asked the bank to write checks to certain charities to minimize the tax effect. However, as of this date, all of his IRAs are now with Vanguard. I'm the financial person, so I spoke to our Flagship rep to make a general inquiry about Q...

Quick question on IRA new "retirement paychecks" withdrawals

Hi, I love reading all the knowledgeable posts that are on the Boglehead website and have benefitted more than I can express -- both monetarily and emotional security-wise -- by what everyone shares. My question is quick and perhaps not worth asking or responding to, but here goes. I just retired la...

IMHO, Scottrade is probably the least desirable brokerage with regards to fees and services. TDAmeritrade, Fidelity, Schwab, and Vanguard are better and lower cost. Thanks for your comments! Glad you seconded this decision. Enjoyed lots of free trades at Scottrade, but that expired and don't need t...

Re: Follow-up to 59 & 76 YOs requesting alloc. & brokerage i

25/25 on TBM/TIPS seems too heavily weighted to TIPS to me. I'd suggest 35/15 instead. Others may differ, though. Thanks so much -- I'll go with that. I am a big fan of simplification, and would therefore put everything at Vanguard (plus your bank for the checking account and ATM card only.). I wou...

I posted on 6/22/13 (http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=118498) and appreciated the input received. Shared it with my husband, particularly lhl12’s suggestion that we (1) consider as if all IRAs/Roths were my $ and (2) decide the asset allocation as if I were single. Husband agr...

As an aside, after he's gone it might make sense to include his kids in the conversation a bit, to help them get used to investing as well as budgeting. Ok. In that case, I would incorporate only 88% of his $ into your individual long term asset allocation. The question is which 88%. If he is opposed to equities then you could consider the 12% as all coming from his fixed income when the time comes. So, for example, if he were 40% equities and 60% ...

I also agree that you should have everything at Vanguard. Thanks: I was wondering about that, as another commenter felt differently. The cons are that I like the idea of a local office, such as Ameritrade, Charles Schwab, Scottrade, Fidelity, etc., and in surveys Vanguard is rarely listed in the to...

Yes that's right: the language is basically "first to die." So if I die first, his kids will get 12%, the Trust become irrevocable (at 1st person's death), and when he dies, our estate would get distributed to his kids/my siblings.

Re: 59 & 76 YO couple requesting alloc. & rebalancing input

Some rhetorical questions: Who determines the asset allocation of the 88% - you or his kids? Who determines how much of the 88% (and its return) can be paid out to you each year? If he dies in five or ten years, and you live to be 100, you might well need to spend every penny of his 88%. Does the T...

According to the Social Security website, you have a life expectancy of 27 more years while your husband has a life expectancy of 11 more years. Actuarially speaking, it is highly unlikely that you will pre-decease him. You haven't said what will happen to his assets upon his death. Will it all go ...

1. Our brokerage accounts are at Scottrade and Vanguard. I'm considering merging them solely into Vanguard. We’d then be “Flagship Services” clients.
