So it seems overall like this is a positive change? I was also wondering whether I should be worried and happy. Lower fees is always a good thing, but always a little nervous with these changes.

Here's additional information for those that are using the Illinois 529 plan. It's nice that they're offering a Rewards Card now. It looks like the blackout period is July 12 - 17. https://www.brightstarttransition.com/account-owners/ Oh! A rewards card - I didn't know about that. Will have to look...

DFA is like a cult....of specialized value investors. Like Bogleheads, we have disciples of Graham and DFA'ers. Guess I have more to learn then! This is why I was leaning towards NY anyways. However, I probably should learn a bit more about DFA since our IL 529 plan is also going to start offering ...

Re: Pay off more of mortgage or wait?

If you would itemize even with no mortgage, any money you are prepaying the mortgage with is locking in an after tax return of 3.375%*(1- Your Marginal Tax Rate). In the 25% tax bracket that's about 2.5%. In the highest tax bracket that's a hair over 2% flat. If you were paying off the property and...

Re: Pay off more of mortgage or wait?

Traditionally, rates have been higher if one finances more than 80% of the property value. Often, it's in the form of PMI or a secondary loan--and that's what might be valuable to avoid. If your loan doesn't have those extra costs, there's really no advantage to arbitrarily go from 15 to 20% equity...

At least put down the 20% to get rid of PMI. OR Paydown the mortgate or pay it off. What ever interest you are paying on that mortgage will be a guarentee interest on your money.
