Re: Help me decide what to do with my cars
I probably do need to trust my Civic a little bit more :D I'm sure there are at least a few years of reliability left in that car. Are you being serious? It is a 2010 model with only 89K miles! You should easily be able to put another 100K miles on this commuter car before needing to replace it. I'...

Re: Help me decide what to do with my cars
Thank you everyone for your input! We definitely recognize the Subaru is a fantastic car and serves our needs right now. While we don't live in the snow, the couple times we've taken it there, it has handled great and feels very safe. The mini-van would be more of a want (never thought I would say t...

Re: Help me decide what to do with my cars
Are those trade-in values quoted? I don't think many would say commuting with a 2010 Honda Civic with 89k is living on the edge. That car should go past 150k miles no problem. $4,600 seems very low. I'll give you $4,600 for it. :D (note: Oldest daughter has a 2010 Honda Civic with 45k miles...

Help me decide what to do with my cars
Hi all, We are wanting a new car (mini-van) soon for our 2 small children and would like recommendations on what to do with one or both of the current cars. We currently have a 2014 Subaru Outback (35,000 miles, blue book value of $16,000, gets about 22 MPG) as our primary family car. My 2nd car is ...

Re: Help with my portfolio
thanks for the help!
Another question - Is there any advantage to changing my 401k fund closer to a 75/25 AA versus keeping that as 92/8 and instead increasing bonds significantly in my Roth IRA?

Re: mega backdoor - Roth IRA vs Roth 401k
following up from my previous question...
I understand the total defined contribution limit is 53k/year via the mega backdoor roth conversion. If I max that out, is it possible to add another 5,500 through the "regular" backdoor Roth method?
Thanks!

mega backdoor - Roth IRA vs Roth 401k
Hi all, My employer just started allowing after-tax 401k contributions that also allows in-plan withdrawal couple times a year, which of course means now I get to do a mega backdoor contribution! When I spoke with the administrators, they said I could either convert the after tax money into either a...

Determining asset allocation help
Hi everyone, I'm having trouble understanding what my actual asset allocation is. My 401k is invested in a retirement target date 2040 (Blackrock LifePath 2040). The following is from the fund's composition page: Fund Category Average Cash 5.62% 4.78% Convertibles 0.00% 0.05% Domestic Bond 4.60% 7.3...

Re: physicians [Frustrated, considering early retirement]
I am a physician about 3 years out of fellowship (intensive care medicine) employed with a big hospital and so far have been very happy with this career. Maybe I haven't been in the field long enough to be burned out and bitter yet, and hopefully won't ever be. I work very reasonable hours (anywhere...

Re: Brand new to investing! Would like guidance...
Thank you for everybody's responses! The 6.8% loan should definitely be one of my first priority. As far as after tax non-roth 401k contributions...my work does allow that, but I was trying to read more about it and a couple of websites mentioned it didn't make much sense since there are no tax bene...

Re: Brand new to investing! Would like guidance...
^Earlier you posted the "asset allocation of my 401k plan" which would have to be the asset allocation of the Target Date fund? Out of sheer curiosity, would posting the Target Date fund"s underlying fund names (and tickers if provided) reveal the company the company name? I suspect that no, it's a...

Re: Brand new to investing! Would like guidance...
Thank you for all the advice and input. Regarding my employer's very generous contribution...and I do recognize it is extremely generous, however I am 100% sure they do contribute this much (half of it is already in my account for the year). My best guess of why they do it is that the base compensat...

Re: Brand new to investing! Would like guidance...
Err... the 0.00% ER funds and the $17,500 full match makes me think OP would benefit from having a discussion with relevant people in his company to clarify a few things as a very first step. I guess I'll check with my employer and confirm, but I'm pretty sure I'm reading it correctly from the Fide...

Re: Brand new to investing! Would like guidance...
Do I read it correctly that your employer is matching your 401k contributions 1:1 up to 17.5k? Where do I sign up?! Woah! I missed that. If that's true, only start paying off your loans after contributing to your 401k. You are receiving an immediate 100% return on you contribution when you employer...
