Thanks grabiner, that looks like a helpful reference.

Re: AMT and bunching of charitable contributions

Your understanding of the tax code is wrong. You will not pay more money by paying AMT due to bunching of deductions versus taking the standard deductions: Lets run the math a) 141k of income with standard deduction : 29.6k in normal, 0k of amt b) 141k with 30k of state tax payments: 23k in normal ...

Re: AMT and bunching of charitable contributions

Do you use tax software? If so, look at the Form 6251 it filled out for you, which calculates your Alternative Minimum Tax. The software won't file the form unless you actually owe AMT, but the form will tell you if you are close. If your tax was $30,000 and your tax under the AMT rules was $25,000...

Re: AMT and bunching of charitable contributions

Married? Filing Jointly? State income taxes? Property taxes? Those income levels sound too low to be worried about AMT, but I don't know your situation. I wouldn't bother to look at the AMT tax form, but would just get out my 2014 copy of TurboTax and start with last year's return and plug in the c...

AMT and bunching of charitable contributions

Hi Bogleheads, Due to a change in my employer's charitable contribution matching policy, I am planning to start bunching 2 years' charitable contributions into a single year and take the standard deduction in alternate years. I don't know much about the Alternative Minimum Tax, but I see that charit...

Re: DI Insurance - Need Guidance!

Whether you are Totally Disabled or not depends on the duties of your occupation from the 12 months prior to becoming disabled. I'm asking this just because I haven't seen it spelled out in these explicit terms: If I retire from my job in January and become sick/injured in December such that I woul...

Thanks TubofProtein. That's what I'm hoping it means. I found the thread that I think you're referring to and reading it was helpful.

Re: Tax Loss Harvesting with Bonds is Different from Stocks?

I'll preface this by saying that I'm thinking about this from a theoretical perspective, and that I don't have any actual experience with buying individual bonds. I think the important question to ask is why the bonds have a market value of 45% of face value. I think the answer is probably either: (...

Disability Insurance with extended time off between jobs

Hi Bogleheads, If I take some time off between jobs, what happens if I become disabled (with respect to what I would call my occupation) during that time if I have Own Occupation or Modified Own Occupation disability insurance? I imagine that the answer depends on how long it's been since I was empl...

Re: The Mega Backdoor Roth IRA

So I need to look for some language in the plan documentation that reads that I can roll the money out of the 401k? Is there more specific or official terminology that I should look for? You're looking for the ability to request an "In-Service Distribution" or "In-Service Withdrawal&...

Re: Newbie questions on how to minimize taxes and maximize gains on taxable account

I think an example would help with answering the first question. Suppose the following, for the sake of a simple example: - You have $10,000 of salary that you want to invest in either a tax-deferred 401(k) or a taxable account. - You will be in the 25% tax bracket your entire life. - You won't touc...

Someone on LessWrong (a community blog about rationality) recommended it when asked for a forum that discussed rational approaches to investing.

ThankYouJack wrote:I sold on 8/24 so if it's on 9/23 I should be ok avoiding the wash sale.

If you sold on 8/24, 9/23 is still in the 30-day window.
8/25 thru 8/31 is 7 days. 9/1 thru 9/23 is 23 days. So 9/23 is the 30th day.

Or am I missing something about the dividend not being reinvested immediately?

Question about adjusting basis for wash sale

Hi Bogleheads! In 2014 I purchased employer stock through an ESPP. Each time stock was purchased, I sold it shortly thereafter. I received a 1099-B and I see the following: 1. In each quarter, I see two separate line items: one for the whole number of shares bought and sold, and a second one for the...

Income Tax -- Scholarships over multiple years

Hi Bogleheads! I attended college at an expensive private school from Fall '08 through Spring '12 (8 semesters) on need-based financial aid that covered virtually all of my expenses. This aid paid for both required expenses (tuition, etc) and room/board. I understand that the room/board portion is t...
