Re: Moving to the US, which CCs to get?

The general rule of thumb is that you shouldn't cancel cards since it makes you look like a credit card churner. You should downgrade your card. I probably will cancel the card once the pass expires or even in just one year before the annual fee hits. I don't think Chase will let you get 2 SW person...

Re: Moving to the US, which CCs to get?

How to get the Companion Pass without the minimum $110k spend has been blogged about to death: http://extrapackofpeanuts.com/southwest-companion-pass/ The current SW credit card links are here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/southwest-airlines-rapid-rewards/1433146-discussion-chase-southwest-visa-50...

Re: Moving to the US, which CCs to get?

It depends on what your goals are. The Chase Sapphire Preferred is the best card for flexible travel points (Southwest, United Airlines). You can also apply for the Chase Southwest Business and Personal cards to obtain mileage bonuses. If you get both, you can qualify for a companion pass. You've go...

Re: Should I move in this market?

I hear you that realtors can be biased just as financial planners can be to. Yes, they can be hard to find but I do believe one could be found that will give sound advice. It's a place to start and is one source of data, and definitely I wouldn't hang your hat on one person's opinion. In my area, hi...

Re: Should I move in this market?

I'd ask a realtor this question since he/she lives and breaths the real estate market in your area. Any good realtor should have a sense of realistic home appreciation over the short and long term. As you know, not all price points will have the same price appreciation. Go here to find a high octane...

Re: Advice: Overextending by buying? How much house to buy?

I am a physician in the Philadelphia area with 5 kids with an income of $300k living in a house worth about $620k. I think a good metric is to have a 20% down payment ($500k), 15 year jumbo fixed mortgage (3.75%), and your housing payment (mortgage + taxes) to be not more than 25% of your take home ...

Scottsdale vacation locations?

I have a family of 7 with kids ages 1 to 13. I am considering visiting the Scottsdale area in January 2017 for about a week. Where do you recommend I rent an airbnb where I will be in a gated community with access to an outdoor heated pool, playground, and possibly gym? Or would I need to book a res...

Re: Help me pick a computer

I was a lifelong PC guide until the iPhone and iPad were gateway drugs to the MacBook and iMac world. I like how Mac's come preloaded with word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Also, the integration of my iMac and MacBook Pro with my phone via texting is revolutionary. I enjoy usi...

Re: Buy a house? But there's a student loan elephant in the room

Check this blog out: http://whitecoatinvestor.com/what-to-do-if-you-have-monster-debt/ As Dave Ramsey would say, you need to live on beans and rice and to pay down that debt as quickly as possible. Personally, I wouldn't purchase a house until my student loans were gone completely. Given your gross ...

Re: Price of a used Honda Odyssey

I have been married for 14 years and have 5 kids (ages 1, 4.5, 6, 11.5, 13). We have a 2001 Odyssey and 2007 Odyssey. We purchased the 2001 for $15k in 2005 and we found it through the Sunday newspaper classified section. It currently has 150k miles and I use it as my vehicle to commute about 15 mi...

Re: Price of a used Honda Odyssey

My previous car mechanic had a car buying business on the side. Personally, I think every ambitious mechanic should be in this business since buying and selling used cars can be very lucrative. And a good mechanic can evaluate a used car within minutes of inspecting and driving it. What part of the ...

Re: Price of a used Honda Odyssey

I know a car buyer that has a dealer's license at Manheim Auto Auction which is the largest car auction on the east coast. He can get wholesale pricing and cut out the car dealer middleman. If you can find someone like this in your area, that is your best bet for finding the best price. Otherwise, I...

Check out Churchill Mortgage. I recently inquired about refinancing and the math didn't work. I still was pretty satisfied with my experience with them.

Re: Requesting guidance on a car purchase

The Sienna has an AWD version which is popular in the Philadelphia area for soccer moms. The Odyssey still is the # 1 minivan by a good margin but some people who live in more rural areas feel they need AWD. Snow generally is cleared within 24 hours where we live.

Re: Requesting guidance on a car purchase

When we had our second child, we went to a Honda Odyssey and we were very happy with this decision. The extra space comes in handy a lot and now we have 5 kids. We actually have 2 Odyssey's now (2001 and 2007). The cargo space in the Pilot is much smaller (16 cubic feet compared to the Odyssey (32 c...

I'm curious what kind of physician you are. I am a hospitalist living in Philadelphia with 5 kids. Cost of living here is moderate and the quality of life is so so. We have considered moving to the Seattle area but I don't think I'd find a similar job to what I currently have now. Also the cost of h...
