Re: Kicked out of Vanguard; now what

I spoke with several attorneys. None would take my case. They felt my company was to big. Strange huh? It ended well for me. I got 9 months pay and benefits and unemployment. I wanted to quit anyhow. Ah, the rest of the story...... :D A "voluntary layoff" where you signed away your rights in exchange for $$$. Congrats!! You might want to include that the next time you tell this story. Megacorp is certainly sleezy/ugly/evil, but they do tend to play by the rules. :beer Hold on there Firechief! There was NOTHING voluntary about it. I was told I was being laid off without any severance. By my manager, his (local) HR manager, her division HR manager. Div HR explained in detail why I didn't qualify. Told me if I wasn't being replaced ...

Re: Kicked out of Vanguard; now what

I am a USA citizen born in Massachusetts. I am Resident in the USA and will remain so. Lucky me. I got sick in 2016 and needed surgery. While on medical leave of absence for only 2 months my company of 35 years told me I had no job to go to and laid me off. I was 56 and planned to retire soon anyway. I sold my house in New Hampshire and temporarily lived with my father in the same state. Federal law guarantees that they can not terminate you for 12 weeks (FMLA). You should have sued them and doubled your portfolio! Not entirely true. You have no right to reinstatement under the FMLA if your job would have ended had you continued to work. I was told the "customer" couldn't wait for me to return. A replacement would be found and hi...

Re: Kicked out of Vanguard; now what

This is very disturbing to hear. I been living overseas nearly a decade. Never give any US financial institution your overseas address. I own some property in the US and use that address. I m starting to notice that even using your phone/computer overseas they track your IP and starting to give grief. I.e. Couldn't open schwab bank account b/c forgot to use vpn. Had to go in person to a local branch in the US!!! Starting to use vpn for all transactions now. Which brockerages least likely to drop me you think -- schwab, TD amer, Fido, or schwab? I have all 4 and will keep them all. Before being laid off my company had me on permanent assignment for the last 7 years living in South Korea, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia. I always use a VPN so as not to...

Hopefully you mean Merrill Edge. If so, sign up for a transfer bonus. You can then get Preferred Rewards set up, if you don't already, and get other benefits.

It's not sad event in my estimation.
I am already at the highest level of Preferred Rewards with Merrill Edge and I like doing business with them.

[Kicked out of Vanguard; Moving to Merrill]

[Moved into a stand-alone thread from: Kicked out of Vanguard; now what , see below. --admin LadyGeek] I am a USA citizen born in Massachusetts. I am free! I sold my car. No bills....not even one. I live using my Schwab, Fidelity, Merrill Lynch debit cards. No credit cards for me anymore I've got cash and I'm not afraid to spend it. . I'm free and boy does it feel great! No responsibility. Intenti...

Yes I agree with your summary.
"Taxable 135 k
Real Estate 303 k
401k 317 k
Roth IRAs 15.5 k (I would combine these at Vanguard or FIdelity)
IRAs 28.5 (I would combine these at Vanguard or Fidelity)
Trust Brokerage 6k
Total = 805 k
Total ex Real estate = 502 k"
Thanks for your recommendations

Thanks for your suggestions.
I will look for the book next time I am in the US. My tax's are just like everyone else's. No special treatment. Unfortunately no tax heaven. I will take your advice.

The ETF's that you are recommending are not available to me in my 401k. Do you have any suggestions for the funds that I have available to me. I am also concerned with currency fluctuations because I will be living in Southeast Asia.
Can I supply you with any more info?
Thanks

Portfolio Advice Please

Portfolio Advice Please I am sure that I am probably giving you to much info...Sorry about that. Please ask me to clarify anything necessary. I am 49. My Spouse is 32. I have recently moved to a position in my company living in a foreign country. Tax Equalized (I do not get the benefit of my foreign earned income credit). I will probably be out of the USA permanently as far a residency goes. I am renting out my home in the USA because we moved so quickly. I will hopefully sell the house in a couple of years or sooner. I plan to retire with my wife in Southeast Asia. Hopefully I will be 55 when i retire but my job is very secure until when i want to retire. I also have the ability to come back to work after I retire if retirement is not what...
