I also apply first, then get the "we will let you know..." message, which is usually a denial. I call right after I apply and find out which agency they pull from, unfreeze and call back... No need to wait for the denial letter in the mail...

Sounds like a great compromise, in 24 months you should have $7,680 (save that 320 per month in a replacement vehicle fund). This is the perfect amount for a gently used Camry or even that Accord EX

If the idea is you will sell your house and rent for a few years, I would just go get an apartment with a standard 1 year lease.
The extended stay hotel will probably be a lot more money then renting, plus you are going to want to keep some of your things from your current house.
