Re: Return visitor in need of a little assistance

Thanks for all your replies. All excellent points. Livesoft "see you next year" gave me a laugh. So true.
Seems like adding a little more to bonds and moving on may make the most sense

I originally posted about a year ago and received fantastic assistance from this forum in setting up my portfolio. I have kept reading recommended books, websites and this forum and feel much more educated. To recap: Emergency funds: 6 months of expenses Debt: home mortgage mid six figures 30 yr fix...

Re: bond funds vs owning individual bonds

I think my friend was making the point that if the market crashed and people and panicked and sold their bond funds as well as their equity funds the redemptions would have a greater impact on me than if I owned individual bonds

bond funds vs owning individual bonds

Hi Im still relatively new to this forum and index investing. When discussing this with my friend in the investment industry, I was explaining my readings through this forum and several books and he questioned why I would use bond funds as opposed to buying bonds themselves. He expressed concern tha...

Re: TLH of FTSE All World

I did the same tlh in the opposite direction back in June from vanguard total intl stock to vaguard world ex us. I just kept the new fund instead of swapping back or having both because they seemed to track pretty closely.
I'm new to this but seemed to make sense.
Thoughts?

Re: TLH Help for New wannabe returning

I forgot but I also recently purchased TSM in my HSA.
Are HSA viewed like 401k in terms of wash sale rules?
Nothing explicitly stated in IRS code?

Re: TLH Help for New wannabe returning

Thanks. Yes, I am contributing the max to my 401k. I do remember you or possibly someone else posting how the 401k may not be relevant for the wash sale. I will look more into that. If that is the case, than I really can keep it simple since I only hold the TDR funds in my other accounts. I agree th...

TLH Help for New wannabe returning

Hi Guys I posted on here for the first time about a month ago and had moved all my accounts except 401k to Vanguard and people assisted in helping me set up my portfolio. It ended up like this and I feel pretty good about it. Taxable (purchased on 5/25) Vanguard TSM Vanguard TISM Vanguard IT Tax Exe...

Re: New wannabe BH looking to finalize plans

Update: Ive decided on an approximately 70/30 stock/bond allocation with 30% of equity in international The closest TDR was TDR 2030 with 75/25 split at this time The other accounts I used the 70/30 goal. Close enough I have performed the necessary transactions with the end result being: His TIRA VT...

Re: New wannabe BH looking to finalize plans

Thanks everyone for the help especially DrAtkinson for the detailed responses. So helpful to have this forum to keep learning and expanding. Im still trying to get a handle on how to evaluate overall asset allocation when using TDR in some places (TIRA) and individual index funds in other (401k and ...

Re: New wannabe BH looking to finalize plans

No, the TLH is just for the taxable account although may have to sell funds in the 401k/ira to prevent wash sale etc

Re: New wannabe BH looking to finalize plans

Thanks for the detailed responses. Dr. Atkinson a few questions TLHing. TLHing is done only in a taxable account. The TDR funds in your TA space will not interfere with TLHing---another reason to select them. You would only need to watch distribution dates to avoid wash sale issues surrounding TSM (...

Re: New wannabe BH looking to finalize plans

Even though it adds some complexity would it make sense to hold a tax exempt bond fund in my taxable account to therefore be able to rebalance more easily because otherwise my bond funds are in IRA's that Im no longer contributing to and my 401k does not have a good low cost bond fund? If so, what w...

Re: New wannabe BH looking to finalize plans

Thanks livesoft. Re: New wannabe BH looking to finalize plans

At this point, my main concern is how much will I be leaving on the table using a three fund portfolio buy and hold strategy without TLH. I've read many of the the threads on TLH and just don't feel confident I would do this successfully. I would prefer not to use a robo advisor and add layers of fe...
