My experience with crypto FOMO. [Fear Of Missing Out]
Hello everyone I have abided by the three-fund portfolio faithfully since 2016 and since then I am happy to report that my portfolio has nearly tripled during that time, including a nice raise in household income. Against my personal statement and what I've learned on this board I was sick of hearing from friends with very little investing experience how they turned $20k to $100k in a matter of week investing in crypto meme stocks like dogecoin. So, I decided to invest about 5% of my portfolio into BTC, ETH, and Cardano. I learned that I could stomach volatility. At one point, I was up $40k the next down $45k. I attempted to purchase more BTC during one of the dips and discovered that I accidently purchased BTC MATIC at the high right befor...

Re: For those adding Crypto as an asset class to their AA
Maybe I have FOMO or maybe I just want to have some exposure in crypto but I decided to allocate 3% of my portfolio to crypto. Does the following breakdown seem reasonable?:
67% Bitcoin
22% Etherum
11% Cardano ADA
I haven't purchased BTC yet but I plan to hold all of these for at least 1 year and if profitable, I plan on taking out my original investment and letting the rest ride. Anyone else hesitating on buying BTC at the 60k mark?

Did you request a Wage and Income transcript? I would want to check that. Ok I think I found the error. Under my spouse's Wage and Income Transcript LIne 1:Wages, Taxes, and other compensation is $7,000 higher than the paper Form W-2 that I have in my hand. I already sent them this information and they just sent the same CP2000 back to me. So how do I find out who is right? She must go back to her employer. They may have submitted a corrected W-2. So either the IRS has the old one or your wife has the old one. The IRS is going to believe the W-2 they received is correct unless you get a corrected W-2c or letter from the employer or payroll. Ok thanks everyone. Just logged onto her work W2 history and low and behold it matches the IRS. They...

Re: CP2000 Need help
There have been several threads in the last week or two about CP2000s from the IRS that have to do with a 1099-R that was not reported correctly on the poster's 2018 tax return. I think all of them have had to do with people trying to move a contribution to an IRA to someplace other than where it started (backdoor Roth process, Roth conversion, recharacterization of excess contribution, etc.) Seems to be the season for CP2000s for that particular sort of reporting error... Plus, $7000 seems suspiciously in the vicinity of an amount that would be contributed to an IRA by someone over 50. (Fly in that ointment is that $6500 was the IRA contribution limit in 2018. But if you are rounding the actual number in your post and did something that i...

All it shows is just 1 out of 3 W2's I submitted. The shown on return and reported by others differs by $7,000. I submitted a copy of the W2 showing that the number is correct. I double checked all of my saved hard copies and there is no way I had any unreported income amounting to $7,000.

CP2000 Need help
I just received a CP2000 for the 2018 tax year. It states that the "Reported by others" amount is $7,000 greater than the shown on return amount. I double checked Form 1040 and I reported all taxable wages correctly. I responded to the IRS that I disagree and all they did was send me the same exact CP2000 again, only this time with interest added to the proposed changes. How can I find out exactly where the $7,000 is coming from in the "reported by others" section? I tried calling the IRS and could not get through.

KomadoJoe grill. All they asked for was a picture showing it was a komadoJoe and the picture of the issue. They immediately sent a replacement piece no questions asked. I know of others who have had same experience. Agree with this one. Auto parts from FCP Euro. They will replace anything they sell for free, unless it comes in a bottle, can, or tube. Duluth Trading company USED to have a great lifetime warranty, but not anymore. I had two pairs of jeans that split along the same stitchline within a month of purchase. I was able to get them replaced because I had purchased them just before the policy changed, but they let me know that in the future similar failures would not be honored because it was "wear". Just so you know FCP e...

1995 BMW M3

2002 Honda S2000
2015 Volkswagen GTI
2006 Porsche Cayman S
Next on the list is either a Cayman GT4 or Lotus Evora 400.

Did I do okay through my first bear?
At the age of 31 I had a portfolio balance of around 900k (85/15) at the start of the pandemic. After trying to calm down family members who later sold around all time highs, I wondered if I made the right decision to follow the boglehead philosophy and hold. I continued to invest (adding a tilt to small value with some of my emergency fund) and made only one significant move which was to tax loss harvest VTIAX around March 17th. Perhaps, I was able to stomach the losses knowing that this would be just a small bump in the road over another 30 year horizon of investing. Since, I was able to stay disciplined and not give in to the panic of others, should I consider going all in at 100% equities? Is there anything I should of done differently?

Ed Bolian was the Cannonball record holder (also in a Mercedes). I've sort of figured out what he makes from various things he's said and I don't think it's more than you make. His retirement fund is in his cars. As a car guy, I can imagine it would be a chore to decide whether to take the 993 or the Scud or the Murci.

Car enthusiast here. Have owned quite a few sub 30k sports cars and besides maintenance, I have actually made some money back after selling. I enjoy working on cars as a hobby and it has saved me thousands. Some great options that I have owned and won't break the bank: 1) E36 M3 2) E46 M3 3) Honda S2000 Looking to graduate to either a Porsche Cayman S, Lotus Exige/Evora, anything with a mid-engine, light weight, and manual transmission. How was the maintenance and ease of doing the work on the E46 vs. the E36? Did you enjoy the E46 more? I absolutely love the driving experience of my E36 M3, but I hate the interior and am terrified of getting in an accident with it. I actually had a patient yesterday tell me she thought it was overkill that I ordered a CTA of her chest because she was still having shortness of breath and a non-productive cough for the past 2 weeks despite antibiotics, steroids, and breathing treatments. I told her I highly recommended it and explained my reasoning. She was grateful that I pushed to have it done when I later told her she was being admitted for her bilateral PE's. What may seem like a simple problem (bronchitis) can be something serious. Yes, she thinks it's just bronchitis, but the medical training recognized her smoking history combined with oral contraceptives, oxygen saturation of 92% on room air, recent travel to Europe, and family history of VTE meant something mo...

Re: Massive losses; what if I die?
Massive realized capital losses for many people have happened before, notably in 2000 and 2008-2009. It turns out that they can get used up for tax purposes rather quickly because they offset realized capital gains. The deduction of up to $3,000 a year of realized losses against ordinary income is small potatoes and not the only benefit to having losses. Exampe: You retire early and live off your taxable investments. You sell $200,000 of shares each year with gains of $100,000. Your previous carryover losses offset the $100,000, so net is $0. But with all those investments in taxable, you are surely making quite a bit of income from dividends which you cannot avoid either. Your dividends are all qualified. You get to offset $3,000 of that ...

Re: Thoughts on Car Expenditures
The soundness of the decision is not the same. I’d argue that the Porsche buyer made the better decision, all other things being equal The $60K earner now has just $30K left for other expenses, savings, and taxes for the year, if s/he paid cash for the Accord. The $250K earner has $125K left for all those things, if s/he paid cash for the Porsche. So the Porsche buyer is in better financial shape. The Porsche also has much lower depreciation although I’d still consider the $125k gone once it’s purchased. A few years ago I considered buying a Porsche cayman at 65-$70k. Flat 6 engine and manual transmission. 4 years later and the new Porsche has a 4 cylinder turbo and the value of the 2014 has held steady. I still want the 2014 Porsche and a...

32, single, the right answer is a 997 Turbo CPO. Get it and be done, and go back to a normal 45k SUV in a few years when you have kids, and save the 911 for weekends. Sell the 911 in 20 years for the same price you are buying it for (not inflation adjusted). Always be that guy with the cool older 911. And enjoy life. Get a few speeding tickets (only for driving 5MPH over, not anything too bad of course). Its great fun. You will pay a lot for maintenance, and it will eventually become a weekend car, alongside a Lexus RX SUV when you get older. But you will love it. Pick a good color, look at vintage porsches. Join the porsche club locally. Hand wash it once in awhile in your driveway at home, have a beer and think about how awesome it is. F...

Re: I Can "Afford" This Right? (New Car)
I would recommend a used IS-F. Great reliability with that awesome 5.0 V8. Can be had for 25-35k depending on mileage.
Since you seem to like Ford why not a used GT350. Hello flat plane crank.

Re: Recommend a daily driver
Reading the replies I don't get the impression they are from people who regularly drive 3-4 hrs at a time in stop & go traffic. But the OP said 3-4 hours AND stop & go traffic. I assumed those were two different tasks: stop & go near campus, and then a 3-4 hour trip on the weekends to get home. And like Livesoft, I would consider a bus or bike or walking to campus. Indeed, I still bus or bike, and I am decades out of grad school. Among younger colleagues there is a sense of entitlement to drive a car and the gyrations they go through to find parking can be amusing. But perhaps I misunderstood, and this is a daily ordeal... This will be a daily ordeal. The second year will be comprised of daily drives to clinicals 1-1.5 hrs out....

Re: Recommend a daily driver
Not a bad suggestion. I had a Subaru Legacy GT at one point. Great car but it ate oil for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I considered it the ultimate sleeper with a Cobb tune and bolt ons it had about 315hp and relatively light for a full side sedan.

Re: Recommend a daily driver
Considered a lease but future mileage is unknown. I did lease a MK7 GTI once and will probably never do that again. I much prefer to buy cars out right. If it helps with recommendations, I believe I have my priorities in line. I have the funds to pay for grad school and with the sale of the M3 I could very comfortably stretch another 5k to get in something more reliable and comfortable.

Re: Recommend a daily driver
I am assuming you own an Alfa judging by your username. No doubt Miatas are great cars but I would must prefer an S2000 if I went that route.alfaspider wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2017 10:26 amOk then. The answer is always Miata.Rifampin wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2017 10:01 am It is well maintained and I am a DIY kind of guy. But with 120k miles on it I will have no time to fix unexpected issues that may arise. Additionally, I will no longer be able to garage it and it will be subjected to door dings, etc Even though the value of it is probably around $14-15k, I mentally can't treat it as a beater car. The last thing I want to be worrying about during grad school is transportation. Also considering switching to something with an automatic transmission for stop & go traffic.

Not much snow but will be repeatedly traveling through the mountains on I-26 so good tires are a must.
