Re: Transferring IRAs from American Funds to Vanguard

I recently transferred Roth IRAs from American Funds to Vanguard. The Am Funds were liquidated and I bought Vangaurd funds with the transfer. Process was almost seamless and no fees. Hope that helps.

Re: Newbie question - How did I earn my first dividend?

Avo wrote:$0.74 on $10K for 1 week is an annualized return of 0.38%, which is likely the interest rate on the settlement fund.

Ah thanks

Newbie question - How did I earn my first dividend?

Potentially very stupid question. Opened my first taxable account a week ago with Vanguard. I put $10k in the settlement fund which pended for 7 days. As soon as it was available to spend, I bought VTSAX. Today I am seeing a dividend of $0.74 apparently made by the settlement fund? The dividend was ...

Re: Investments for HSA - need input please

These fund listings look very similar to my HSA offerings, so I'm guessing you are signed up with MyBenefitWallet I could potentially move the funds to another provider, but I leave it as-is because this may cause contribution problems with my employer. I actually went through that entire list abou...

Upgrade Vanguard account?

I'm planning on opening a taxable account at Vanguard and I noticed the website was telling me to upgrade my account. I have a IRA and Roth IRA currently. Did some searching and saw VG was moving to an unified brokerage account. I saw mixed reviews and feelings on the upgrade and some people had err...

Re: Vanguard Robo advisor

Recently moved wife and my Roths from Am Funds to Vanguard. While successful there was a bit of a hiccup as it looked like both accounts were going to be transferred in to my account only but we caught it early and one phone call fixed the problem. It still says "Track your transfer" on th...

Re: Help choosing type of taxable account

What will you be funding the account with? If you will be depositing assets that are jointly owned (while living in a community property state), how can you justify an individual account unless you each open accounts in the same amount? That's a good point. Our funding accounts are all joint so no ...

Re: Help choosing type of taxable account

So looks like I can set it up as Community Property with rights of survivorship which means I would get both the benefits of avoiding probate if one of us dies and the full step up in basis cost as well? It also seems in California, ones assets are very vulnerable to creditors, even if accounts are ...

Help choosing type of taxable account

I'm getting ready to open a taxable account at Vanguard and I thought I did enough research until I came to the part where I choose the type of account. So I guess I need to do more research but hoping ya'll can help and point me in the right direction. A little background: Live in California, marri...

Here's a good Backdoor Roth tutorial even if you're not a doctor. Also look if you can do the so called Mega Backdoor Roth.

Re: Questions about rolling over IRAs and its effect on backdoor Roths

There are too many ways for things to get messed up. What kind of things for example? I would really prefer to get that money out of American Funds. I didn't say not to move the money. I said I would not do a 60 day rollover. I'd have Vanguard "pull" the Roth IRA over in a trustee to trus...

Re: Help with picking 401k investments

1. As to whether to keep the 403a or not, I think it depends. This account does have a few institutional funds you might find useful such as Vanguard's small caps index (VSCPX), Vanguard's REIT (VGSNX) and Vanguard's social index fund (VFTNX). If you want to have a REIT fund, I think it's best to p...

Questions about rolling over IRAs and its effect on backdoor Roths

So I'm trying to consolidate some accounts to Vanguard. My wife and I both started Roth IRAs at American Funds through a financial advisor before we knew better. We are currently doing back door Roths at Vanguard as I exceed the income limit. Am I correct in concluding from what I've researched so f...

Help with picking 401k investments

Hi everyone, just recently discovered this forum and I'm learning a lot. I consider myself a novice when it comes to investing. I've been working a few years but only recently started to really think about how my retirement portfolio was doing. We picked my investments without too much rationale. Ba...
