Charlie Munger's Comments on Index Funds versus "Stock Picking"

Didn't see this posted but a good affirmation from Charlie Munger (Berkshire Hathaway) on investing in Index funds versus picking stocks "I would hate to manage a trillion dollars in the big stocks and try to beat the indexes. I don't think I could do it." Link below: http://finance.yahoo....

Re: Fire extinguishers

Multiple extinguishers through out the house and garage, plus one in each vehicle. Friendly public safety reminder - If you have the dry powder type extinguishers remember to check the gauge and to flip them upside down a few times to keep the powder from settling in them when you check your Smoke D...

Re: Verizon to Cricket or StraightTalk

Another satisfied Cricket user.

Was with Verizon for 20+ years but the steady price increases pushed me to look elsewhere. Before switching check the coverage maps for your area, all cell carriers have dead spots, just in different locations.

Re: Cutting Trees in the Back Yard

This is a job to leave to the professionals. Bid the job out among tree companies that are bonded and insured for both liability and workers comp. Call their agent to verify insurance is in force before they start working on your property. Neighbor tried the cheap route, hired 2 guys with a pickup a...

Re: Car purchase- email negotiations for CPO cars?

SixAlpha - Point well taken on the online maintenance records. I am just leery of a relatively "new" car under warranty with no history or paperwork on oil changes, etc. On the other hand as soon as I purchase a vehicle it tends to "disappear" from the Carfax online tracking othe...

Re: Car purchase- email negotiations for CPO cars?

Definitely recommend the email route. We have purchased 2 "certified pre-owned" (a Lexus and a Honda) with great results. The last one we bought was purchased with out a test drive (we looked at it on the weekend when we could check it out with out being pressured by the lot salesmen). Tot...

Re: Wisdom of decision

Retiresafely - Welcome to the Forum. Your situation sounds very similar to where I was at before I found the Bogleheads. (My former FA had me in 26 different funds just to make it looked complicated  ). I was paying him a 1.5% AUM fee which I thought was a little high but I my epiphany was whe...

Re: Continue LTC Policy or Self Fund?

I will try to address the questions asked: The "Paid up at 99" basically means that we make annual payments @$5,900 until the DW is 99, after she turns 100 they don't charge anymore premiums. (40 years x $5,900 each year) :moneybag The LTC rider is included at "No Charge" I have ...

Continue Whole Life Policy with LTC Rider or Self Fund?

I am making progress to convert my investments to a lazy portfolio (from the 26 different funds my former FA had me in just to make it look complicated). After making considerable progress with the investment transition (and getting better returns than the previous FA’s portfolio) I am now second gu...

Re: A broker's response to 3 Fund Portfolio

Sounds just like my former FA before I found the Bogleheads (he had me in 26 different funds just to make it looked complicated). My epiphany was when I signed up for the Morningstar and plugged the FA's portfolio and compared it with the X Ray analysis tool against a 3 fund "lazy" ...

Re: Which Engineering Discipline for the next 20+ years !!!

Pick a major in that you at least have some interest in, but I would also recommend picking your electives in a complimentary major to broaden your skill set. Engineering is in very high demand still and looks to be in demand for a long time into the future. My degree is ME, but took most of my elec...

Re: Best & Worst Financial Decisions?

Best: Saving / Investing consistently since first day of employment Worst: Trusting a fee only Financial Advisor to pick the funds for my portfolio. High expense ratios, extremely aggressive complicated portfolio, with much lower returns than the 401k funds that I was managing on my own. Re: Should I proactively freeze my credit?

Highly recommend freezing your credit proactively. To quote the old saying "it is too late to close the barn door after the horse is out". Cost will vary depending on where you live, we just happen to reside in North Carolina which requires the Credit Bureaus to let us freeze / unfreeze ou...

Re: Turning a Bogle eye on auto insurance for first time

Look into bundling with your homeowner policy, AAA also writes insurance in NC for auto / home / umbrella.

Pays to price shop your insurance business every other year or so to make sure you are getting the best coverage for the lowest price.
