Re: Home backup generator experiences

I never could justify a dedicated whole house generator, instead we installed a manual transfer / lock out plate on the electrical panel and an outside power inlet that we supply using the Bobcat welder we have for welding around the farm, 10 kw pretty much runs everything in the house except the he...

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2018!

I has been 3 months since I officially hit the “R” button and notified my management I will be checking out in 2018 and the stress level in my life due to work has drastically dropped. I had my annual physical this week and my blood pressure is the lowest it has been in many, many years. :D Good luc...

Re: Large inheritance -questions to ask potential advisors

First of all condolences on the passing of your father in law. I went through a similar situation with my mother's estate but you are much smarter than I was - you came to Bogleheads for advice before doing anything. :happy The first item to address will be to identify any tax implications for 2017 ...

Re: Alternatives/choices with ambulance or rescue squad

dm200 - The answer to many of your questions is "it depends". I am not sure of your exact location (hopefully you are not inside DC) but I am actively involved in Fire / Rescue response here in NC and can only speak based on my 38 years of being a firefighter / EMT. First off I will apologize for th...

Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2018!

I could not find a Class of 2018 post so I guess I am the first to officially hit the “R” button for 2018. I have run the numbers through all the online calculators and thanks to the members of this forum I am ready to make the jump after 35 years with a megacorp that is in the process of being take...

Re: Vexing electrical problem in the house

Sounds like you need to get firm with the "warranty" company and demand a licensed (and competent ) electrician to come out and fix the issue. As others have said you have an issue with an intermittent connection, more than likely in the breaker panel. A thermal imaging camera can very quickly ident...

Re: Tax preparer charging for past tax PDF's copies

My CPA supplies me a bound hard copy of my tax returns along with supporting documentation when he is done. It is then up to me to retain it or make copies as I see fit. I am sure he would charge additional for a pdf copy, either at the time I pick up the hard copy or if I came back at a later date....

Re: The $1,124,176 Car.

I will have sit down and do the math on how much my daily driver (1990 Honda Civic) has saved me over the years  Nothing other than normal scheduled maintenance (which I do my self) since I bought it. I might have to look about retiring it from daily driver status when it hits 30 years old....

Re: Questions for Parents' Executor to Ask Beforehand?

I have been the executor for both of my parent's estates. When my father passed away it was very straightforward, all financial assets passed directly to my mother per the terms of the will and since she was listed on all financial accounts as Joint Owner with Right of Survivorship or she was sole b...

Charlie Munger's Comments on Index Funds versus "Stock Picking"

Didn't see this posted but a good affirmation from Charlie Munger (Berkshire Hathaway) on investing in Index funds versus picking stocks

"I would hate to manage a trillion dollars in the big stocks and try to beat the indexes. I don't think I could do it."

Friendly public safety reminder - If you have the dry powder type extinguishers remember to check the gauge and to flip them upside down a few times to keep the powder from settling in them when you check your Smoke D...

Another satisfied Cricket user.

Was with Verizon for 20+ years but the steady price increases pushed me to look elsewhere. Before switching check the coverage maps for your area, all cell carriers have dead spots, just in different locations.

This is a job to leave to the professionals. Bid the job out among tree companies that are bonded and insured for both liability and workers comp. Re: Car purchase- email negotiations for CPO cars?

SixAlpha - Point well taken on the online maintenance records. I am just leery of a relatively "new" car under warranty with no history or paperwork on oil changes, etc. On the other hand as soon as I purchase a vehicle it tends to "disappear" from the Carfax online tracking othe...

Re: Car purchase- email negotiations for CPO cars?

Definitely recommend the email route. We have purchased 2 "certified pre-owned" (a Lexus and a Honda) with great results. The last one we bought was purchased with out a test drive (we looked at it on the weekend when we could check it out with out being pressured by the lot salesmen). Tot...

Retiresafely - Welcome to the Forum. Your situation sounds very similar to where I was at before I found the Bogleheads. Re: Continue LTC Policy or Self Fund?

I will try to address the questions asked: The "Paid up at 99" basically means that we make annual payments @$5,900 until the DW is 99, after she turns 100 they don't charge anymore premiums. (40 years x $5,900 each year) The LTC rider is included at "No Charge" I have only made ...

Continue Whole Life Policy with LTC Rider or Self Fund?

I am making progress to convert my investments to a lazy portfolio (from the 26 different funds my former FA had me in just to make it look complicated). After making considerable progress with the investment transition (and getting better returns than the previous FA’s portfolio) I am now second gu...

Pick a major in that you at least have some interest in, but I would also recommend picking your electives in a complimentary major to broaden your skill set. Engineering is in very high demand still and looks to be in demand for a long time into the future. My degree is ME, but took most of my elec...

Re: Turning a Bogle eye on auto insurance for first time

Look into bundling with your homeowner policy, AAA also writes insurance in NC for auto / home / umbrella.

Pays to price shop your insurance business every other year or so to make sure you are getting the best coverage for the lowest price.
