Re: "preview" of bear market

Thank you. I've been playing around with a spreadsheet to show larger drops in value and so far, it still looks like something I can sleep through. Will check with spouse after he's back in town. Next I need to decide about BND versus more short terms bonds and also think about starting a cd ladder....

"preview" of bear market

We've bought and held for many years without too much angst and went with the big 3 Boglehead ETFs (VTI, BNS, VXUS) a few years ago. Simple. But nobody is getting any younger or less risk adverse and I thought it would help my spouse to know ahead of time about bear markets and to mock up what the p...

Re: Do we need annual furnace exam?

The last time they checked our gas furnace, they detected a problem that would cause a fire. It is 10 years and the fix was inexpensive.

Re: Advice w/ 62YO Mom Moving In - Rent? Resentment? Plans?

I thought that mom is a dependent on the tax return, the ACA subsidy limit is higher because it is based on "tax family." I don't understand why it is important that she not be a dependent? My mom is over 65, so she is not in our "coverage family." I was getting ready to claim he...

Re: Potentially invalid HSA (due to FSA) -- what to do?

Would the December 1 rule apply here? "The Last Month Rule states that if you are covered by an HSA eligible health plan on the first day of the last month of a given year, you are considered an eligible individual for the entire year." http://www.hsaedge.com/2014/03/25/hsa-last-month-rule...

Re: Sequencing a relative's genome

2 older relatives (one on each side) signed up with 23andme and shared results with me. Mostly entertaining at this point. Actions taken - one started inexpensive OTC supplements for increased risk of macular degeneration. The other chose to test for celiac. My spouse (adopted) signed up for a broad...

Re: duration? [Help selecting bond funds]

Thank you all; I appreciate your time and thoughtful input. I now own some BND. I am much happier if I understand why I am doing something. My portfolio is now more balanced overall. The other changes were easy to make; no over-thinking there! Back to living below means and staying the course. I wil...

duration? [Help selecting bond funds]

I'm new to the Boglehead ideas of AA and rebalancing, but have long been solid on "live below your means" and "buy and hold." I've finished all the reading (the wiki, Bogle, Bernstein, Swensen, and Malkiel's controversial 2013 edition) and I'm working my way through TD Ameritrade...
