Hi, I am typically a cabernet sauvignon drinker and have only drank one glass of a particular pinot noir on two different occasions. There is a local café that serves coffee, fancy drinks and wine. I ordered this wine "Smoking Loon Pinot Noir" because it was the cheapest on the menu and I was pleasantly surprised with it. It was very light in body and really smooth. Very different from a nice cabernet but also very enjoyable and I would think would pair nicely with lots of different types of food or be great just by itself. I do believe this wine is about $8.50 a bottle. It might be worth a try for you but again I haven't had any other experience with pinot noir.
Cheers,

Re: Umbrella Policy - Do I need it?
We have a 1 million dollar umbrella liability policy with Geico. We have one youthful driver on our policy currently. Previously we had two when our daughter lived at home, but she moved out this past year. The policy premium goes up every year and is now $848 per year. The auto insurance is with Geico and increased quite a bit with the recent renewal. Our home owners is with another company. I think I really need to start shopping around to bundle everything with one insurer. The increases are getting ridiculous.

We went with a Nelsen brand softener and brine tank. There is no salt restriction here. I do know that you can also use potassium pellets in most softeners. The downside is the price for potassium is significantly higher.smitcat wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 3:45 pmWhat system did you end up going with? Use an electronic de-scaler with a water softener?
Hello,
We live in an area with hard water and have a water softener that uses salt. I'm learning about water softener issues and have been wondering if one can use an electronic water de-scaler device with a softener to prevent mineral deposits from sticking to shower walls, inside of pipes and appliances. I've done a little web searching and I cannot find anyone who recommends that these be used in conjunction with one another, only separately. If anyone knows about this and could offer an opinion, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you,
LPSpecial

Re: Have you completed a term life policy?
Has anyone actually finished a term life insurance policy with the same company they purchased it from? I'm just curious if they reach out with any upsells as you near the end of the term - akin to "we've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty". Did they offer an additional policy and if so, was it an 'extension' or did you have to do the physical exam/bloodwork/etc all over again to prove insurability? Or did you and the company just quietly part ways after the last payment was made? Yes, I completed a 20-year, $500,000 term life policy. When I had about 2 months left in the policy, I started looking around for a replacement policy. I was contacted by the company that my policy term was coming to an end, and...

We hold some Primecap Odyssey funds at Fidelity. I think it was $49.95 for the initial purchase, then after that you can do automatic investments where you set up at least two automatic investments and you'll only be charged $5 per transaction for those purchases. It has worked well for us. The major downside is that it is harder to rebalance with these versus a Fidelity fund.

Re: Mortgage Recast Advice
Hello,
The bank that issued and holds our mortgage offered us a recast so to speak when I inquired about a refinance. They said that it is much less intrusive than a refi and would be perfect for us as customers in good standing. There was a 1 percent fee or $1500 fee whichever was less. Then the mortgage would be reamortized with the outstanding term. In our case it was reamortized at 28 years with the new rate. It turned out to be perfect for us.
Best regards,

Re: Wasps and fireplace vent?
When we moved into to our new home several years ago (existing home built about 30 years ago) it had a yellow jacket infestation. The white tempo dust did the job and got rid of all of yellow jackets. Since the area has many flowering trees nearby, there are a lot of bees, wasps, all around the area, I was looking for a natural way to deter the yellow jackets from coming around our home. I found out that a spray bottle filled with tap water, about 10 or more drops of essential oil of peppermint, and a couple drops of dish soap make a very good natural spray that stinging insects and flies absolutely hate. I go around the house 4 or 5 times in the warmer months and spray this stuff all over. It works pretty well as I was spraying some near t...

Re: Vanguard website succumbs to "Fisher-Price" UI design
I guess it had to happen sooner or later. I just logged in to my Vanguard account, only to find that the usual "Balances and Holdings" page is no longer there. It has been replaced with a "Holdings" page that is a redesign according to Fisher-Price UI design principles (i.e., suitable for toddlers). This includes: * A lot less information per screen than before. * A lot more white space on the screen than before (more space between everything). * Most everything in big, bold fonts. * Ticker symbols in very large fonts, with fund names in fine print (as if they think ticker symbols are more meaningful). * No longer any colored borders on the screen (which helped to break up and delineate sections). In our case, we had our own realtor who showed us the home and presented the offer. It was after that the listing agent called my mortgage banker with questions. Our mortgage banker called me to let me know and told me that the listing agent was really kind of a jerk.Gray wrote: ↑Wed Mar 10, 2021 3:00 pm My understanding is that you’ll have issues if you see a house with the listing agent and later get your own buyer’s agent. I would never use a listing agent (representing the seller) to do anything for me (the buyer).

This happened to us as well. The listing agent of the home we bought called our mortgage banker to get a verbal double check on our finances. Apparently it must be a rare thing when someone has 20% to put down and doesn't have to sell their existing home first to move forward on another home. I guess I can't blame them for wanting to be sure of the potential buyer before accepting their offer.barnaclebob wrote: ↑Wed Mar 10, 2021 12:53 pm The agent who was selling our current house to us house did contact my mortgage broker who assured her that our finances were in top notch shape. Hello, we had two groundhogs under our deck. I tried sprays and other deterrents and they didn't do much. I heard they hate cayenne pepper so I bought two large containers from Sam's. I sprinkled that all around the deck and blew a lot under the deck with my yard blower. That seemed to affect them because we didn't see them for over a week. But they were back. Before calling a service to do live trapping and relocation, I thought I would try the victor sonic spikes. I put two around the deck. They were about $28 and take 3 D batteries. You drive them into the ground and they make an electronic noise every 30 seconds. These are really for moles but I thought if they are going to stay here under my deck that I would make them very uncomfortab...

We bought and installed a newer Kohler elongated toilet about 7 years ago at our previous home. It was definitely an upgrade for us. The first time we needed to plunge it, the old round standard plunger didn't work anymore.
A trip to Home Depot where I asked the question and was directed to a specific plunger type (Korky brand) that works very well with the elongated toilets. Problem solved.

We keep $600 in our checking as our $0 in the check book register. This way we don't have to worry about tipping under $0 if our spending is slightly above our monthly budget. We don't get interest on this money but that's Ok with us.

I typed up a very formal, polite and direct letter of resignation. I placed it on my boss's in basket. After he got in, it took about 20 minutes and he came out noticeably agitated. He invited me in to his office to talk about it. He was clearly upset. I was polite and honest in my answers to his questions and thanked him for all I'd learned there. I didn't tell him that he was the most difficult person I've ever worked for and couldn't imagine a worse working environment. I gave two weeks notice and we parted ways on good terms. Sometimes he could be a thoughtful and genuinely nice person, but his emotional outbursts, rudeness and brutal honesty far overshadowed the good. It wasn't just me that experienced this. Re: Anyone else have trouble freezing their credit?
Interestingly, the exact same thing happened to me. I was able to freeze 2 of the 3 credit reports online, but had to send in additional documentation by mail for the third company. I was concerned about that, but it worked out just fine. It did take a few weeks but I had fraud alerts in place so I was able to relax a bit because of that. It was a stressful experience but thankfully any real damage was prevented. As I have no intention of taking out more credit cards or loans, and someone had tried to take out a credit card in my name (caught by Chase fraud), it seemed like a good idea to put a freeze in with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Re: Attic Fan & Noise Ordinance
In 1999 we put a Masterflow gable vent attic fan in because our roof did not have adequate ventilation. We were told to set the thermostat at 105 degrees. It made quite a difference in helping to reduce the attic temperature. We put a new roof on in 2006 which had adequate venting but kept the fan installed and running. It finally died a couple months ago. With the fan not operating, we noticed that the humdidty in our home was much worse than with the fan running. So I bought the same model and replaced it myself (don't like going in the attic, really a pain). Several of the online reviews said that these new models were very quiet. I was anxious to see if that was true. It is much quieter than the old one, I can barely hear it running ins...

Re: Removed credit freeze, lender still can't pull report
I never froze Experian. I had a bad experience with Equifax back in the days after the Anthem data hack was announced. My report was frozen and then I never received the pin number because their website was having problems. A number of people on this site mentioned having the same difficulty. I had to call their helpline and get it corrected. After that; I didn't bother with Experian.

Re: Removed credit freeze, lender still can't pull report
Yes, it only took a couple minutes to put in my pin number and remove the freeze. Still... a week later my mortgage guy cannot access the credit reports. He says he has seen it take a couple of days to several weeks. I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this.

Removed credit freeze, lender still can't pull report
Hello all,
One week ago, I removed my credit freeze at Transunion and Equifax. My lender still cannot pull my credit report from those agencies. Does anyone know how long it takes before my account updates and my lender can access my reports?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Anthem hack; Protecting Children's Information
[Post merged into here, see below. --admin LadyGeek]
We are insured with Anthem and this is quite troubling. I have been thinking of freezing our credit. My bigger concern is our children who are insured with Anthem as well. How can you protect their information or freeze their credit, if they even have credit established?
Thank you for your thoughts.

Re: Wine - how to keep it from not spoiling?
I bought a Houdini wine preserver at Target on sale for around $10. It is a vacuum pump and it comes with two stoppers. It really does help, especially with red wine. Normally, after one day in the refrigerator, a re-corked bottle of red wine tastes terrible. Now using this product, I can get a few extra days out of a bottle of red wine.

Re: Anyone use UPromise?
Yes, we've had an account for about 13 years and so far have received about $570 in UPromise rewards. We take the earnings and put them in our children's ESA's. Every little bit helps.
If you eat out a lot or buy online frequently, you could definitely target some decent cash back savings this way. You don't need a linked account either; you can request a check for the earnings.
