Re: Size Doesn't Matter [Factor investing]
I just read one of Alpha Architect's articles/papers and their favorite or suggested equities allocation for investors is the Core & Satellite approach composed of: 50% S&P500 / 25% Value / 25% Momentum Why is that the optimal ratio? It seems too neatly symmetrical. Yeah that's just a general easy to split allocation as a starting point for comparison. Also the point they were trying to show is that just because back-testing from anyone shows that FACTORS XYZ outperformed --- doesn't mean you should go all in on those factors....very difficult and can be highly volatile including lengthy periods of underperformance. So one of the points they were trying to show is sticking with something like the S&P 500 (or Market-index) as a ...

Re: Size Doesn't Matter [Factor investing]
I can understand Alpha Architect's multi-cap point of view because they're not broad market-cap weighted investors --- so if you look at LCV vs SCV from a broad brush of marketcap-weighted stocks, sure over the long-term you will see some difference with SCV outperformance. However - they're more focused stock investors and look at stocks equally regardless of size. You have a $100B company that could be just as attractive from a Value/Profitability stance as a $7B company. So they're comparing things stock by stock on an equal level playing field from a size perspective. So yes thru the lens of a market-cap weighted perspective when comparing LCV to SCV --- you'll find some outperformance over long-periods with SCV because of the weighting...

Re: Avantis ETF Filing Today
Avantis® Total International Markets Equity ETF (ticker: AVTD) will be a direct competitor for DFAX at Dimensional, I'm guessing - it even has the same MER of 0.31. So notice the difference --- the Avantis Total International Markets Equity and Total International Markets Value ETFs are both ETF of ETFs. The Dimensional version (DFAX) of Total International differs where it's just straight equities all combined into the mix. I don't think that makes a difference overall but I'm just pointing out the difference in their construct approach. ---Avantis Total International Markets Equity ETF Composition--- Non-U.S. Developed Markets - Target Weight: 70% | Target Range: 60% to 85% Avantis International Equity ETF Avantis International Large Cap...

Yes indeed - it'll be interesting to see what that balance break-down will be like between LCV & SCV.burritoLover wrote: ↑Wed Mar 22, 2023 8:03 am AVGV (All Markets Value) is probably going to be dominated by LCV I would guess. Would be nice if they include a strong SCV tilt though - 50/50 LCV/SCV would be nice.
If they went with 50/50 - oh boy Paul Merriman (and his buddy Chris P.) would be ecstatic! --- as many know he's been so big on advocating 50/50 LCV/SCV for the long-term investor.
My wild guess is that Avantis may go for more of a 60/40 (LCV/SCV) balance - but that's just my pure speculation.

Wow that's nice! I'm particularly interested in AVGV (All Equity Markets Value ETF) --- in fact maybe a split between AVGE + AVGV. I still like AVGE as a core foundational blend w/ moderate global value tilt and adding AVGV gives the additional/stronger global value tilt. If you guys had to pick a Midcap Fund - would you pick the S&P 400 (IJH) or CRSP Midcap (VO)? The CRSP Midcap Index has a much much larger avg Market-cap size. Based on M* metrics - the S&P 400 (Midcap) index is practically half Midcap & half Smallcap. Is there performance data for the CRSP Midcap index for say 20/25/30 years to be able to compare to the S&P 400 Midcap index? You can backtest VO on portfoliovisualizer.com until 1972 using "back test asset class allocation" and selecting mid cap. Then you can run the backtest for MDY which goes until 1996 or use the data in my original post to see it until end of 1994. Or you can test MDY vs VMCIX on PV from the start of 1999. Long story short, the returns are extr...

I thought this was a very good interview covering various topics with Larry Swedroe from a Youtuber Host (Millennial Investing / Rebecca Hotsko) - and was just recently published. I really liked some of Larry's descriptive analogies & explanations. Rebecca covered some great topics with her questions. https://youtu.be/oyAhZ2Mdlt8 Some of the topics discussed... - The difference between Alpha versus Beta. - Why is the ability to generate alpha shrinking? - How competition has played an increasing role in reducing alpha over time. - What would happen if everyone went passive? - Larry’s perspective on concentration vs diversification. - Why good businesses are not as good investments. - Should investors prefer dividend-paying stocks over n...

Projected Expense Ratio of 0.22% https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1816125/000168035923000040/dimensionaletf485a.htm From my understanding - the Dimensional Vector funds are broad-based holding thousands of stocks (growth, blend, value) but with a strong value & smaller-cap size tilt. So kinda similar to the Dimensional Core Equity 2 but with an even deeper value & size tilt (albeit this new Vector ETF will only focus on largecaps - top 1000 stocks by size - whereas the Core Equity 2 ETF is broad-market based). The Portfolio is designed to purchase a broad and diverse group of readily marketable securities of U.S. large cap companies that the Advisor determines to have higher profitability and lower relative price as compared ...

This is a good topic. I have about 20% in individual stocks but I have learned to trim down - I plan to do so 1-step at a time starting with trimming down to 10% and part of that can be accelerated by adding new money to my ETF holdings. A sampling of my individual stocks include Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Visa, Mastercard, Berkshire Hathaway, Lowes, Home Depot, Broadcom, Realty Income + few others but it's a short list in total. It has worked out well (part luck?) by focusing on quality, wide-moat firms but you get sucked in thinking too much about your individual investments and what's happening to the business. Take Lowes and Home Depot for example --- I hear mixed messages these days that Home DIY and Contractor business will soften but ...

Piggy-backing on the OP's referenced article by Larry Swedroe - here's another one by Dimensional Funds last year that had a similar perspective. Should You Chase Dividend Stocks to Combat Inflation and Rate Hikes? https://www.dimensional.com/us-en/insights/should-you-chase-dividend-stocks-to-combat-inflation-and-rate-hikes But I do get why some folks invest in some Dividend Funds such as the popular VIG / VYM / SCHD / DGRO ETFs that have attracted a lot of money. These are heavily Mega/Large cap focused funds - in fact VIG and VYM are market-cap weighted ETFs holding large basket of stocks. To me these are glorified S&P500-like funds - meaning, they're somewhat similar to the S&P 500 but with a dividend screen. Again I understand w...

Re: Vanguard CEO on Direct Indexing
There is another benefit to Direct Indexing - though I'm not talking about holding a basked of stocks. So one of the benefits is the ability to hold ETFs in a custom basket to make investing easier -- and lots of of M1 Finance customers like that idea and that's how they use it on that platform. I know of a number of young investors using M1 Finance with ETFs and Pie investing model as it makes regular investing much easier. So you can borrow the idea & benefits of custom Direct Indexing but apply it to ETFs . Example --- a young investor has 4-8 ETFs in an IRA for a globally diversified equities allocation + REITs (and bonds too depending on your age/risk tolerance/etc). So using the Direct Indexing capabilities -- you create a Pie con...

Re: Dimensional v Avantis
Just wondering whether anyone has an opinion on Dimensional versus Avantis. Please note I am asking about the companies, not their investment offerings. So maybe a better way to phrase the question would be: Which do you believe is the better company for the long term? Any ETFs purchased would be held in a taxable account. So trying to avoid, as much as is possible, the scenario of starting with one company but later having to move to the other, and likely incurring a taxable event in the process. My internet research causes me to lean a bit more toward Dimensional. They have been around a lot longer, appear to have a deeper bench, and seem to have more ties to the academic experts at the University of Chicago. Avantis looks good, but (and...

AVUV according to M* is showing turnover of 24% - which is close to DFSVX (DFA SCV Mutual Fund) at 23%. I think those are moderate amounts of turnover to be expected for a Smallcap Value fund right?IMRTguy wrote: ↑Sun Feb 05, 2023 2:55 pm AVUV seems to be very tax efficient despite turning over a large portion of its portfolio it shows no capital gains and dividends are 100% qualified. Is this due to the ETF structure? If so long term ETFs should create a lot of wealth in comparison to a similar mutual funds which would have annual capital gains/ordinary income from turnover.
IJS (iShares S&P600 SCV ETF) is showing 42% turnover.
VBR tends to have a lower turnover because it has a bigger band before kicking stocks out of the underlying CRSP index.

Re: Avantis has the cheapest international large value ETF
My biggest concern with Avantis funds is that other than AVUV and AVDV (I personally invest in both) - the later funds are not attracting much assets. DFA is attracting assets like clockwork across the spectrum. While ETFs in general can be tax efficient, DFIV, DFAT and DFUV are coversions of tax managed funds and may be great for taxable accounts. I've thought about that too - some of the DFA ETFs may be more appealing for Taxable accounts because they have large AUM and volume...and some of their ETFs are invested with extra tax-management care as you said because they were conversions from Tax-Managed Mutual Funds. Dear Bogleheads, I have attached three plots which might help to elucidate these discussions. These plots show the long term performance of Fama/French/Novy-Marx factors in different markets (i.e. US, Developed, and Emerging) per data from Professor French's website. Each plot shows the 20-year forward geometrically annualized return of the five common factors across each of three markets. Note for developed and emerging markets there is only ~30 years of data, so there is some sample bias in these types of plots. I have also included the means in parenthesis in the legend. Nevertheless, the SMB factor doesn't seem to amount to much (most of the time) and historically is the least worth pursuing, especially outside of US markets. Also note...

Wow that's strange - I thought Merrill was just a standard Brokerage firm like Fidelity, Schwab/TD Ameritrade? Wonder why they are restricting purchases of AVGE? I'm not sure the extent but some brokerages do this. For example, with M1 Finance, you couldn't invest in Avantis EM Value (AVES) for awhile and their reasoning was too low AUM. Yeah I think AVIV is great for the ER in that space - I'm not aware of anything cheaper (....and like you said I'm excluding Dividend Focused Int'l ETFs such as VYMI - 0.22% ER] I just wish AVIV had more volume - it's pretty light. The one pro point going for DFIV is that it has much higher volume along with $4.9B in assets - and that's because it converted over from their traditional Mutual Fund to ETF structure. Both are very similar including country allocation - though AVIV has a bit higher focus on the Quality factor than DFIV. I like them both! For international Dev and EM I’m probably sticking with predominantly Large-Midcaps or Multi-cap but with Value & Profitability tilt.
In the Int’l and EM space the long-term factor expected higher returns mainly came from Value & Profitability. Yes Small benefited but barely - it was thin. Add in the higher trading costs and higher ER plus small company risks — I just don’t see the benefits in targeting it. There’s been some papers written about why this may be the case —- part of it has to do with the differing business/funding/M&A/investment landscape & opportunities for small companies versus that in the US.
***Still not sure yet - may throw my hands in the air and just do 50/50 Large & Small

Yes a number of folks have been looking at AVGE - Avantis All Markets Equity ETF … a fairly new ETF of ETFs.sunnywindy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 18, 2021 6:42 amYes, I would be happy if that came to market, too (although I think I'd pick an Avantis equivalent first if I had a choice).IndyMachiner wrote: ↑Thu Nov 18, 2021 4:19 am I’m still waiting for them to release a version of their Global Equity Fund in ETF form.
…
Offers a simple all in one fund that appeals to common/avg investor looking for mild-moderate global value tilt. But you can certainly add say more SCV if you wanted additional tilt.
But yeah why not - I’d like to see Dimensional offer a similar global ETF of ETFs.

Re: Why very high speed internet?
Yup so Comcast is rolling out upload speed upgrades across the country starting with 100 / 200 Mbps. I used to get only 25 Mbps max upload speeds with Comcast/Xfinity but just couple of weeks ago it went to 100-115 Mbps upload speeds. At the same time - they are staggering another upgrade to support multi-gig upload speeds.MtnTravel wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 7:21 pm I’ve found that 100mbps is the sweet spot. The biggest difference we noticed with fiber optic was having symmetrical upload and download speeds. Huge difference on zoom calls. Comcast has fast download speeds but their upload speeds are embarrassing. Plus on old cable systems, depending on how it’s designed, the more people using it in your area, the slower it becomes.

Re: New Avantis worldwide ETF with value tilt
For anyone interested, Paul Merriman and Chris Pedersen briefly discuss AVGE on their latest video/podcast, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCtEykUXcA0 The discussion of AVGE begins at about 48:15 and goes to roughly minute 55. Bottom line as I heard it: Mr. Pedersen appreciates the simplicity aspect of AVGE but thinks better exposure to small/value factors can be had with nearly as simple 2 or 3 fund portfolios, (or with their complicated "best in class etc ultimate buy and hold" portfolio) portending possibly better returns. Meh. They are wedded to their "best in class" portfolio but I see that as more data mining into past returns. I see AVGE as one foot in the small cap value camp, and another in the total mar...

Re: Six more ETFs from DFA (Dimensional Fund Advisors)
How do factor geeks feel about: DISV vs. AVDV DFSV vs. AVUV Dimensional seems a tad more expensive, but it has a longer track of record. Which one are you planning to buy going forward? Both are great choices but prefer Avantis for lower costs and methodology that I tend to prefer. Higher emphasis on profitability/quality Some may prefer DFA which looks to be a tad more diversified by industry They look to be a great TLH pair So now that we have an ample ETF line-up across Avantis and Dimensional - I also have been reviewing both offerings across US/International/EM and noticed the same thing especially the "VALUE" focused funds --- that Avantis emphasizes the Profitability/Quality somewhat more than Dimensional. And then interes...

Re: Six more ETFs from DFA (Dimensional Fund Advisors)
And yet still no emerging markets small cap value fund, from anyone. I’ve mentioned that to more than one DFA-using advisor, they always tell me not to hold my breath. I’ve heard: - too expensive -too illiquid - no demand (I guess some advisors are skipping emerging altogether recently at both their own, and their client’s, discretion) I hope these folks are wrong. Last time I brought it up was last summer so maybe some movement? AVES - Avantis Emerging Market Value ETF is multi-cap with some smallcaps and lots of midcaps. It has a much lower avg market-cap weight exposure than broad EM funds....$6B avg mkt cap per M* is quite small for a multi-cap EM fund. I get it's not specifically targeting EM Smallcap sized companies but Avantis spoke...

Re: How would you modify AVGE (Avantis All Equity Markets ETF)?
Apathizer --- I like your portfolio, nice & simple using AVGE plus adding a bit more US SCV and International. I'm warming up to AVGE for simplicity as well especially since I'm still heavy in the accumulation stage - and when I slice'n dice too much I tend to over-think and over-tinker with my portfolio. I like your use of DFAX etf as well - interesting and good option for an all in one International Developed + EM mix with good/moderate value & small tilt. And it has a sizable $5B+ in assets with good volume. AVGE appeals to the common folks with the 70/30 US/International tilt and with a modest value/small tilt - but I can add additional US SCV & International exposure as I need to. Btw --- I'm not a big fan of targeting Smal...

Re: Fidelity, Vanguard or Schwab? I need to choose.
I'm a big Vanguard fan. Then again I've never needed to talk to customer service ;) Fidelity has a better reputation customer-service wise, but Vanguard's funds are much better. If we're talking about Index funds - then you can do just as good at Fidelity and Schwab. Fidelity Total Market Index Fund isn't small either - it has $42B in assets and the Investor Class shares has an ER of 0.09% .... this compares favorably with the Vanguard equivalent TSM fund @ 0.15% ER. For ETFs at Fidelity - you can use Vanguard ETFs if you wish for a low $4.95 transaction fee or numerous iShares ETFs for no-transaction fee. Example - iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market (no transaction fee at Fidelity) has a super razor thin ER of 0.03% Over the yea...

Re: Fidelity, Vanguard or Schwab? I need to choose.
What did poorly at Fidelity was a 529 plan. I didn't pick any funds for it. I picked an asset allocation that was moderate risk. (Not aggressive, not conservative). I have since done research on 529 plans and found out that Fidelity doesn't make the "best 529 plan" lists, anyway. On the savingforcollege website, it ranks the performance of Fidelity 529 plans somewhat lower than many others. My 529 with Edward Jones (Blackrock) actually did better, after I did the math, even considering the fees that EJ charged. Although I am moving ALL these 529 plans to Utah Educational Savings Plan. That's because of the mix of the overall actively managed funds in the Fidelity 529 plans from various fund families - so they are assessing the ov...

I think the Fidelity 529 Index plans are pretty darn good and as others have mentioned - their prices have inched down over the years making them extremely competitive.
The much lower entry to start (@ Fidelity) versus going directly Vanguard is another perk and it's another bonus if you are already using Fidelity.

Thanks for the update --- woohoo!
See, no need to jump around, that matches the top tier groups that also recently increased to 1.15% rate (except for GS who's at a razor-thin more at 1.20% --- but that's not a big deal of a difference to me).

Re: Vanguard upgraded my accounts - angry
My sister who had a Flagship account thru me had less than the one million minimum. When she "upgraded" she found out she was no longer a Flagship client. Furthermore, her Prime Money Market Fund which had less than the $3000 minimum was converted to a Federal Money Market Fund, paying a lower rate. Also her checks were cancelled, and now the minimum check she can write is $250. She had to download a form to fill out and mail in to get checking privileges with her fund. When she called to inquire, she was told that she could not speak with her former Flagship representative since she was no longer a Flagship client. She was told that she had been "demoted." Also, she found that her hold times were much longer. The irony...

Re: Consolidating banks accounts
First - since you are wanting 3 Checking accounts in total across the both of you, do you qualify to avoid those monthly fees on each Checking account at Chase ? I can understand why you like Chase - fairly large presence (branches) around Texas and perhaps you want a local presence for some banking transactions especially if Dallas is your home for the foreseeable future. (Granted different folks have different needs and preferences for banking). They have good security and a well-rated mobile app. Among the large national banks, I also do like Chase. As others have mentioned - you could also find a local Credit Union and see if that fits. There are some peculiarities with many Credit Unions I have found that may be ok with you or not --- ...

Re: Which High-Yield Online Savings Account Should I Open?
Another +1 for Ally. For me their rates are better than a lot of other places but their website and speed of transfers put them in front for me. Increasingly I'm having any deposit streams just go straight to Ally savings other than our regular paychecks needed for household bills. Couple weeks ago I linked Ally savings to our Vanguard account so I could do straight transfers. I really appreciate the interface on managing, redeeming, or creating new CDs. Nice to know! And for the OP - Ally has been pretty good for a lot of folks who want both online checking & savings account in one place, including very competitive CD rates. See this thread about the recent CD action: Ally no penalty 11 month CD rate increased to 1.50% this morning ht...

Re: Which High-Yield Online Savings Account Should I Open?
Discover, Ally, and Alliant all have checking accounts along with their high interest savings accounts. Discover has 10 cent cash back on up to 1000 transactions a month. Ally has .1% at balances below 15000 and .6% at balances above 15000. Alliant has .65% if you have estatements and monthly deposit. I would recommend one of the three above as they do not limit the number of bank-to-bank links, which makes them great as a hub account. One of the issues I had with Alliant Credit Union during a Friday evening (after 7pm) was that my online login account was locked out and when I called to try to have it reset, the Rep said that they couldn't do it and that I would have to call back the next day during daytime hours and someone would be able...

Re: Rollout Begins for Person-to-Person Digital Payments Backed by Banks
But you mentioned needing the other person's banking info What's wrong with that? Outside of the antiquated US banking system, having someone's bank details doesn't mean anything. I have the bank details for dozens of friends and vendors. Sending someone a 10 digit phone number is no easier than sending them a 10 digit bank account number. Tell that to the tens of millions who would rather not do it that way. Besides, it's easier to do it via something else like mobile number. Think of situations outside of vendors you work with and dozens of your friends....think of broader, ubiquitous use cases and convenience. Like I mentioned above --- Europe is moving towards a new system as well using mobile number payments. For Zelle - if you don't ...

Yes generally those are taxable income.
With some of these bonuses you have to read the fine print - some of them are only available 1 per household.

Re: Rollout Begins for Person-to-Person Digital Payments Backed by Banks
I had to chuckle when I saw this. When I lived in Belgium over 10 years ago, person to person payments were routine -- even if the person was in another country. All you needed was the bank info from another person and you could make a real-time payment. Based on our trajectory in the US, I predict by 2150 checks will be obsolete. Yes that is true from what I heard and here people in the US have used other payment systems such as PayPal or Popmoney. But you mentioned needing the other person's banking info --- this newer P2P mobile payment system won't require the recipient's banking info --- it could be just the recipient's mobile number. Now from my understanding, what the European Central Bank wants to try to implement by 2018 to every ...
