Recommendation for Tax Efficient Investments for Home and Car (3-10 Year Time Frame)

SHORT VERSION: Please recommend a Vanguard product(s) that are tax efficient (they will be held in a taxable account) that would be a good place to put money needed for: -(1) Part of a downpayment for a home in the next 3-8 years -(2) Part of a downpayment for a car in the next 5-10 years I am willi...

Experience Using Roth IRA at Vanguard for Funding Startups

Does anyone have experience using funds from a Roth IRA at Vanguard to invest in startups? I would be holding an equity and/or convertible note position in a start up. The start up is not mine and it is not one that I am employed by, so I believe that this would be legally permissible in the eyes of...

Re: Asset Allocation and Portfolio Review - 3/14/16

Can you do me a favor and go back and add the ERs for each holding ? It helps me be sure there are no unnecessarily expensive choices in there :) Thank you for writing out the names of each. I like your point that it is better to stick to your picks than make changes. You seem well aware your choic...

Re: Asset Allocation and Portfolio Review - 3/14/16

Any thoughts? Happy to hear constructive criticism or just general thoughts. The size of my international allocation has always bothered me a little bit. However, I am now 4+ years into this allocation and I do not want to change the course now. If I were going to change that allocation, it would o...

Asset Allocation and Portfolio Review - 3/14/16

This website has been tremendously helpful to me and has led to me managing my own finances. For that, I thank everyone. I am hoping to get some thoughts on my asset allocation and portfolio. I know many people will recommend something simpler (such as the 3 fund portfolio), but I settled on this as...

Re: Changing to specific ID from average cost - consequences?

1 - I do not have any non-covered shares. 2 - I will need to check, but I believe so. 3 - Some are at a gain, while some are at a loss. 4 - I would be fine with that approach. I just want to make it easier on myself to tax loss harvest. Lately, I have been selling (or, in the case of mutual funds, e...

Changing to specific ID from average cost - consequences?

I have being using the average cost method rather than the specific ID method for tax loss harvesting purposes (stupid, I know). I want to convert to specific ID this year and continue to tax loss harvest (I have already done substantial tax loss harvesting this year). Are there any tax consequences...

Two Reconigition Questions: Exchange for other Mutual Funds and Backdoor Roth

I have two fairly straightforward recongition questions: (1) When converting a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA (the backdoor Roth) are losses recognized for tax purposes? (2) When exchanging one mutual fund for another in a taxable account are losses recognized for tax purposes (subject to, of course,...

Re: So Mutual Funds are actually quicker to trade than ETFs?

Random somewhat unrelated question: when one exchanges mutual funds - does that result in recognition of gains or losses? I assume so, but just wanted to confirm (subject to the wash sale rules of course).

Re: TLH Options for Emerging Markets, Intl Small Caps, Active Managed Small Cap, and Small Cap value

Anyone have thoughts on this?

I think everyone would benefit from this given the down market lately (I imagine a lot of put are TLH).

Is it just that there is no great option for these at Vanguard?

What are some tax loss harvesting (TLH) options for the following: -VEMAX/VWO (Vanguard Emerging Markets) -VSS (Vanguard International Small Caps) -VSTCX (actively managed Vanguard small cap fund) -VBR (Vanguard small cap value) From prior research, I recognize that there is no perfect option for TL...

Re: FTSE All-World ex-US vs.Total International Stock?

Posting from phone, but:
-they are the same except one is missing small caps (vss).

-there are several threads about this: search for VEU and VXUS

-for purposes of tax loss harvesting they are essentially the same (small caps only make up a very small %)

I am doing the same today.

Opening Up A Separate Account to Save for a Home

I want to open up a separate account to save for a new home. My current situation is the following: -I have a fully paid off home that is approximately 250k (give or take 10-20k) -I foresee purchasing a new home in the next 4-8 years. I do not know how much it will be and whether I will keep my curr...
