Re: How does a underlying bond dividend affect a bond fund NAV?

Thanks. Good information. Now I know the right questions to ask: does the fund accrue and pay out interest on a daily basis? Not that I would do this, but it seems that fund that do not accrue and pay daily might attract investors who only invest long enough to get the dividend (and avoid fees) befo...

How does a underlying bond dividend affect a bond fund NAV?

Does anyone know how the underlying bond dividends of a bond mutual fund affect the overall NAV of the bond fund? For example, if most of the underlying bonds pay their dividend on January 1 and July 1, how will this influx of cash into the bond fund affect the NAV the following days? By the way, I ...

Re: Investment timing strategies for 401(k) -> IRA rollovers

If you are already in stocks and bonds now, I think it would be unwise to go to cash (other than just the time it takes to transfer) and then "get back in". This is exactly the problem. Fidelity manages the existing 401(k) that I am closing out, and I understand they will cut me a hard co...

Re: Investment timing strategies for 401(k) -> IRA rollovers

This is great info. Especially thankful to "damjam" for referencing these articles. As a normal guy who's spent most of his career doing regular payroll contributions to the 401(k), that dollar cost averaging approach is all that I am used to (since it was my only option; there were no lum...

Investment timing strategies for 401(k) -> IRA rollovers?

I am about to rollover my 401(k) to an IRA. I know my target asset allocation and it will all be in Vanguard ETFs, but the only question is how to get there. Since this is a sizable chunk to move at one time, I am looking for some advice. I see three options: 1. Just invest it all immediately when i...

Re: Question about VTI and International

Everyone -- thanks for the very helpful advice, especially nisiprius with the Vanguard web site tutorial. I've relied on finance.yahoo.com for most of my info in the past (why? not sure.) and it doesn't have the drill down capabilities. Since nisiprius gave me a little quiz, here are some answers: 1...

Question about VTI and International

I am considering using Vanguard's ETI as my primary (only?) vehicle for stock investments. It's diversification and extremely low cost are very attractive. Question: Do I get an international exposure with VTI? If not, what would be a comparable international ETF to VTI (very broad based, including ...

Do I need a Third Party Administrator for an Individual 401k

I am a sole proprietor with myself as the only employee. I have spoken to two investment companies that provide the Individual 401(k). One company says I need a separate company to be a Third Party Administrator to handle all the compliance for for the plan, which I understand is mainly filling out ...

Early Retirement, Self-Employment IRAs and what about TDAmer

I am taking early retirement in the next couple of months and starting my own business. I was leaning towards rolling over my 401(k) to TDAmeritrade (since I already have accounts with them) and buying their no-commission Vanguard ETFs and then using them to set up some type of self-employment IRA. ...
