In all honesty, marrying a high-income earner can make a big difference.

Re: Where to park Emergency Fund in Roth IRA

Wouldn't any high-quality total bond market index fund (VBMFX or SWAGX) be ideal?

Re: Changes to NYS Deferred Compensation Plan

I'm thinking of leaving the NYSDCP because of these changes and rolling over my funds into a Vanguard 401k. I like Vanguard's transparency and simplicity. What is the main benefit of the 457b vs 401k? Is it the lack of a 10% early withdrawal penalty if I retire before 59 1/2 yrs? If I do not plan t...

This may not apply in your case, but those with 457(b) accounts can withdraw contributions AND interest at any age provided they no longer work for the employer with whom the account is held.

Re: Schwab Vs. Vanguard?

If you want to do a Three Fund portfolio, Schwab has everything you need at very low ERs:

Schwab Total Stock Market Index (SWTSX)
Schwab International Index (SWISX)
Schwab U.S. Aggregate Bond Index Fund (SWAGX)

Personally, I really like their website and customer service.

I tried to move some money into the Target Date Index Funds and was told by Schwab that they are closed to new investors as of 3/31/17.

Do you know when this goes into effect? The Schwab website still has the 0.13% ER.

Re: Changes to NYS Deferred Compensation Plan

Did anyone else read yesterday's NYSDCP newsletter? They discuss the change in investment options, although not in great detail. Apparently a supplemental newsletter detailing the new funds will be coming out soon.

The changeover is now scheduled for July.

Looks like the Board will have a public meeting held at the Empire State Plaza on April 25. This could be very convenient for those that work at the Plaza to attend. https://www.nysdcp.com/iApp/tcm/nysdcp/learning/news/public_meeting_notice_apr.jsp I will try to attend this but I may not be able to...

Re: Changes to NYS Deferred Compensation Plan

So as far as I can decipher from the December meeting minutes it appears that they are going pretty much to all CIT's. Although Vanguard Wellington and Primecap will still be offered. I don't like the idea of being in a CIT mainly because it's going to mess up keeping my AA accurate within my Vangu...

This is disappointing. I was considering Vanguard v. Fidelity for a Roth IRA this year and this thread (along with others in a similar vein) are tilting the scales in favor of Fidelity.

Re: Changes to NYS Deferred Compensation Plan

There hasn't been any announcement that I am aware of, but in digging through the meeting minutes of the December 2, 2016 meeting of the NYS Deferred Compensation Board, changes are coming to the plan's offerings in the next year. While I was hoping for changes and that they would include more Vang...

Thanks for posting this information. This is news to me. I have everything in the Vanguard Institutional Indexes but if BlackRock has an even lower cost, I'm not going to complain.

Re: Roth vs. Traditional w/pension

Yes Roth contributions will probably be better for you. What is your age? What balance do you currently have in traditional accounts? I'm 28. This is a bit embarrassing but I only have about $5K in my 457(b) and it's almost 100% Roth. I'll be opening a Roth IRA this year and will put in at least $3...

Roth vs. Traditional w/pension

Hi everyone. I'm trying to determine the optimal choice between Roth and Traditional for my government-sponsored 457(b) knowing that I am almost certain to receive a pension (possibly two) when I retire. A conservative estimate for the pension's value is $60K/year, though it could end up being $80K+...

Re: Miami Open Tennis

I was in the WPB/Delray Beach area in February for the first time. I was a little surprised at the volume of traffic at all times of the day. May take a while to get to Miami. I'm posting mostly to say I'm very jealous you'll be going to the Miami Open. Thank God for the Tennis Channel -- it allowed...

Another vote for a used Prius. I bought a 2012 last year for a little over $13K, 35K miles. I am still amazed at the gas mileage I achieve...in the summer, I often get 70 MPG on my morning commute.

Re: Fund choices for 457(b)

Thanks for the suggestion. In that case, I think I'll go with the VIIX and when I open a Roth IRA (won't be before this April's deadline, unfortunately...but definitely by next year) I'll go with VGTSX. For bonds, VBMPX is a good choice? And finally, it makes sense to stick with Roth in my situation...

Thanks folks. As several said, I'm not too concerned about where the money is going right this moment because the amounts are so small. But I'm trying to learn so that I can adjust allocation when the time comes.

Thanks for your help.

Fund choices for 457(b)

Hi all, I'm a 24 year old government employee, fairly new to the workforce. I've decided to sign up for the state 457(b) and have some very basic questions on the fund choices. First, I'd like to keep it simple; index funds and some bonds. At this age, I feel comfortable doing an 85/15 AA, but sugge...
