Re: How am I doing? (Teacher Edition)

One thing I can tell you is that for all of us teachers, it's going to depend a lot on how reliable your pension is.

Re: Advice on kid's precalc learning

HS math teacher here. In order to really help her, you need to figure out when she started having trouble. Whether it has been all year, or more recently. Some concepts build on earlier ones, while some units are idependent. It would be a good idea to ask the teacher how best to help her. In my expe...

Re: Confidence in NY state pension, 403b, 457

Thanks for the information. Isn't the 403b subject to political pressures as well because of the fixed rate? I read somewhere recently a suggestion to modify it to 6.75% - it had been at 8.25% not too many years ago. If they lowered the rate of return would it just be for the future and not the past?

Confidence in NY state pension, 403b, 457

So I'm looking for some advice here. I'm a NYC Teacher and can invest in a 403b (includes a 7% fixed rate option), a 457, and will receive a pension. If I could fully max out those retirement funds, it would be a ton of money I'd receive when I retire (20 years hopefully) However, I'm concerned that...

Re: Great Lakes making it impossible to apply for Teacher Loan Forgiveness

Can't speak about your issues specifically and I had a different lender. Mine took months to go through and I had to submit twice. The feedback they gave me about errors were not helpful, I had to call to find out what the real issues were, which were multiple. Some things to check: They're very spe...

Re: Great Lakes making it impossible to apply for Teacher Loan Forgiveness

Which program is it?
Is this the Teacher Loan Forgiveness for working in high-needs subjects in low-income schools?

Re: 403(b) "Fixed Return of 7%" Election Question

NYC Teacher here. Seems like the 7% is guaranteed as long as the state is willing to pay the money. Next year there can be a constitutional convention(every 20 years) where they, can modify all sorts of things including the pension laws, and I'm assuming 403b offerings. I put 50% of my money in the f...

Re: Turn off water heater on vacation?

I turned off the water heater once when we went away for a month. Had trouble getting the pilot re-lit because the electric ignitor wasn't working and I had to relight it manually. Now I just put it on a really low temperature setting

Re: Drain Cleaner or Plumber for slow drains?

I use a zip it for sinks and a snake in the bathtub. Beware that a metal spinning snake will mess up the finish on a toilet if you put it down a backed up toilet.
I live in a condo and this is what the plumber uses and charges $200 per visit.

Re: Any NYS Teachers with 403B?

I'm a NYC teacher and our 403b is through TRSNYC which offers six funds (one of them a 7% fixed rate). I also recently found out about 457 deferred comp throught NYC which is not advertised at all, weird. It definitely has lower Costs than the 403b
