Re: Has used furniture dropped in value dramatically?

My experience is the same. Middling "brown furniture" is worth very little these days. Nothing, really. Better stuff, like my 100-year-old tiger maple dressers, stuff like that, is worth more, but there is still enough of it to go around. The good stuff, like an 1840's maple secretary desk I just so...

Re: Where to take more risk: 401k or Roth?

goingup said "The ER of the TR2055 is .07. Period. This is a common misconception that a "fund of funds" has ERs that stack up on one another." So what you are saying is that Blackrock made a deal with GE to reduce their ER on shares held in GE's 401k plan to 0.07% or less? Because that's the only w...

Re: Where to take more risk: 401k or Roth?

My daughter is starting to think a bit more seriously about putting a couple hundred shares of GE in one of her retirement accounts now.... :happy But who knows where the bottom might be. I don't think it's zero though, like Sears.... And by the way, the ER on the 2055 target date fund in her 401k i...

Re: what pickup truck

Just a quick note. I bought my first-ever pickup a few months ago. a 2013 Nissan Frontier. 21,000 miles and a creampuff. I didn't want to go quite the 150/1500 size, but close. And the Tacomas, the sellers/dealers tell you "they're expensive but they hold their value so well." Well that's good for T...

Re: What backup service to use?

I rely on Dropbox synching but like the others said, it's not a backup. So I back about 50Gb to a 64Gb flash drive about once a month. And I'm SUPER careful when I move and delete files. So far so good. EDITED: Most stuff I have, I wouldn't miss. It's also replicated elsewhere, like in emails, other...

I have some experience with this. My second (and last) daughter went to Carnegie Mellon for four years, graduated last May. Neuroscience.... :-) 1) Don't complain about the FAFSA. Some schools require the CSS Profile in addition to the FAFSA. It makes the FAFSA look like the 1040 EZ. 2) More importa...

Re: Cellphone Battery

That the phone manufacturers now build the batteries in, that's dirty pool. I now own (5) Samsung S5's. Paid less than $100 apiece for them and LOVE them. I've repurposed 2-3 of them as jukeboxes, TV sets, etc. and just leave them laying around. But as time goes on they'll become phones again. I get...

Re: Where to take more risk: 401k or Roth?

OK I get it, what virtually all of you said. And I already knew it. That conventional wisdom says, with greater risk comes greater returns, at least in a long-enough timeframe, however long that is. Investing 101. And that greater returns are better rewarded in a tax-free Roth than in an eventually-...

Re: Where to take more risk: 401k or Roth?

OP jumping back in. Thanks for the responses. My question is "where to put the risk?" Not "where to put the stocks?" I'm trying to inquire from more of a theoretical perspective. Or at least get an answer based on theory/math/probability. And like JBTX, I think the answer is "it doesn't matter." but...

Where to take more risk: 401k or Roth?

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it. Sorry if it's substantially redundant. Send links if it is. For someone who has both a 401k and a Roth IRA, where should that person put the riskier assets?. Or say that person ultimately wanted a 75/25 stock/bond overall portfoli...

Re: Storage Recommendations for pictures

Most of the above suggestions, in and of themselves, are NOT good backup solutions.... Dropbox, etc. -- It replicates stuff to the cloud that's stored on your hard drive. Sounds like a backup, but if you inadvertently delete something from your hard drive, it disappears almost instantly from the clo...

Re: Vehicle Maintenance App

Thanks all for the info so far. To be clear, what I am most interested in, and which may be of interest to others here, is an app into which I can tell it what the vehicle is, so that it knows the recommended service schedule (e.g. tranny fluid at 75K) and put in my service and other events against ...

Vehicle Maintenance App

In my quest to make better use of my smartphone, I’m now looking for an app to help me track the maintenance needs and history of six personal vehicles: three cars, one pickup, one lawn tractor and a golf cart. But mostly the cars/truck. Ideally the app would keep track of when I had maintenance iss...

OK I checked my records. This is the company that "refurbished" both of the 50" Samsungs I bought. Only reason I know is because I had to make a quick call there for some help. And I got prompt and thorough assistance. Which I suspect is rarely needed but I am thorough. They probably also refurbishe...

Re: Refurbished or New TV?

I skimmed this thread. Despite all the posts you haven't gotten an proper answer. So I'll try.... In the last 12 months I have purchased three refurbished Samsung TVs. Two were 50" 4K smart TVs for $350 (each) or so, normally $600. The other was a 40" 1080P that I paid about $180 for. Normally over ...

Re: I bought a different car and my old bike rack no longer works. How should I transport my bike moving forward?

Dunno what anyone else said and I'm not gonna take the time to read 44 posts. If it's just your own bike I recommend the Saris Solo. It goes on and off your trunk in a minute, fits easily in the trunk with some spare shock cords, and is reasonably secure when properly installed and the bike is balan...

OK so I didn't get a lot of input here, that's fine. I installed and am operating Google Play Music and I'm quite happy with it. Re: Question on When to Take Social Security

It looks like the other posters have it covered. My understanding is, that as long as your parents don't need the money early, the best strategy is to wait until 70 to claim the larger benefit, and to take the smaller benefit at FRA (age 66). I'm 62 and married, just read the Piper book, and am read...

Before I retired I commuted to work 21 miles round trip, in Ohio, for about ten years. Skimmed the prior posts, thinking about my gear.... 1) Fenders. So from your links I'm seeing that one can create playlists, the list and tracks remain in the cloud, but the tracks can also be downloaded to your device and played from there with the playlist remaining in the cloud. Looking for Mobile MP3 Player, What Do You Use? Why?

I recently ripped my entire CD collection to MP3. Almost 2000 tracks. I even took the time to tag the tracks that needed help, proper attribution, cover art, etc. I put the MP3s onto my computer, then onto my Android phone, and use an app that came with the phone, a Samsung app, to organize playlist...

Funny to see this thread. I read it last night and will catch up with the recent posts in a minute. But I wanted to first say, late last week and early the week just ending. I sold 20% of the VTI in 3-4 of my portfolios and used it to buy RSP. RSP is an ETF that is equal-weighted in the S&P 500. 1/5...

62-Year-Old has a Social Security Question

First time original post here…. I’m 62, wife is 61 and I’m starting to research Social Security. I bought and read the “Get What’s Yours” Kotlikoff et. al. book thinking our situation was very much vanilla, her my full retirement benefit around $2250 month, hers around $1700 a month. We each just cl...
