Re: How to find reputable person for Will/Trust?

Hi All, Thanks so much for the responses. My parents have never used a lawyer for anything that I can think of in their lives. Additionally, they do not really have any close family/friends/neighbors that they can or would feel comfortable asking for a will/trust lawyer. This only was brought up bec...

How to find reputable person for Will/Trust?

My parents recently attended a seminar put on by the local community center regarding retirement/Wills/Living trusts that a company put on. They were looking into having this prepared but I looked up the company and I don't know that they are best suited to help them with this. How do I go about loo...

Re: Taxes on bonus

Somewhat related, but my bonus came in at ~ $20K and half of that was sadly taken out from taxes. My tax return was ~ $3.5K and Turbo Tax suggested I do a W4 so that I get more money through the year and a smaller tax return. How would I go about doing that, now knowing how much of my bonus was taxe...

Old 1099 for TurboTax

Hi All, I have searched far and wide, but am unable to find an answer to this. I have a return from 2014 from Scottrade, where I have losses of ~ $800 that I have never claimed for tax loss harvesting. How do I go about adding this to my tax return this year in TurboTax? Is this even allowed, since ...

Excise tax for excess HSA Contribution

Hi All,

It looks like I over-contributed to my HSA this year. How do I go about rectifying paying the additional taxes? All money was used at the end of the year since I had surgery this year. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Helping my parents with their retirement

If you'll indulge me, I do take issue with your "want and deserve it" comment. Now in your parents' case it is clear that they can afford the remodel, and I see no reason to ask them to rethink. But a lot of people get themselves in financial trouble by buying things that they "want and deserve" bu...

Re: Helping my parents with their retirement

Hi All, Thank you for bearing with me as information trickles in. For my mother's pension, there is a single life annuity at 2897/month For my Father's pension, it will be 1448 with Survivor benefits and 1609 without Survivor benefits. These estimates are for planned retirement in 2020. His TSP is a...

Re: Helping my parents with their retirement

Hi All, After spending the holidays with my family and starting to dig into their finances, I realized I may be in over my head and wanted to bump this thread. From what I have gathered, they have multiple taxable accounts with balances ranging from 20-100k, along with their retirement accounts (dad...

I would be able to use points for air travel, so not including airfare in the budget. New Orleans is definitely on my short list.

Re: Helping my parents with their retirement

Thanks joebh! I will start with these questions and report back. To answer a couple of the questions: - when do they want to retire? mom wants to retire in 2017, dad wants to retire ~ 2020 - what do they want to do in retirement? they do not travel or have expensive hobbies, nor do I see them wantin...

Vacation from SF around NYE?

Hi All,

I'm looking to get out of SF for New Years and was wondering of any suggestions for cool, CHEAP (under $1,000 total) places around that time to travel to for about 7 days, either domestic or international. Any suggestions would be great!

Helping my parents with their retirement

Re: UPDATE: New investor looking for advice

I wanted to update you all on my status and see if there was any additional advice that I could get as it seems like I am a little off from where I was hoping to be back when I started my profile and "loosely" following the Boglehead lifestyle. I turned 28 a couple of months ago and recently receive...
