Cash back reward cards. Pay early?

Hello All.. I have a quick question about Cash Back reward credit cards. Thinking of cancelling simply because we really have no need for them anymore. One is all that is needed. Why does it hurt the credit? Wont they eventually be cancelled anyway if we don't use for an extended period?
