Should I tilt to Country of Birth in asset allocation?

Hi, I have a roughly 60-40 portfolio with international exposure (e.g. Vanguard Retirement 2025). However, in the future (say 10-15 years) I intend to spend some time of the year (3-4 months) in the country of my birth. So expenses e.g. upkeep of ancestral home, travel in that country etc. will be i...

Re: Lending Club desperate for investors?

I made roughly the same.. around 2.3% compounded over three years. I also made some quick money on the IPO (was offered shares at initial price).. If I include that it would be 3.3% return. So not great but could have been worse. I am all out now and don't intend to invest using this platform.

Re: Where were you financially when you were at 30?

Wow.. some of these numbers are really impressive..Great going! My net worth when I was 30 (2004) was around -$50K. I had just finished my MBA and wife started her MS. To top that I bought a house in 2005 which kept my net worth negative for probably an extra year or two. With the starts you guys ha...

Re: No idea how much to save in a 529

I am trying to figure out the same thing. I have an adequate emergency fund and after maxing Roth/401k/HSA am always thinking about how to divide investible income into taxable and 529. I have a 7 year old with around $55K in 529 (I don't get any state income tax benefits in NC). I used to save $160...

Re: What happens to unvested 401k of laid off employee when company files chpt 11?

I am not worried about the 401k (or should I ?).. it's with Vanguard has nice funds and moving it may mean that I forgo the unvested portion IF the 401k becomes fully vested for ALL present and ex employees if the company files chapter 11. As far as rolling over the 401k, I don't quite like the opti...

What happens to unvested 401k of laid off employee when company files chpt 11?

Hi all! I was laid off before the entire amount of company contributions to my 401k was fully vested. I have around $10K of unvested $$$ in my 401k with my previous employer (I am still maintaining that 401k). Now this employer might file for bankruptcy, there have been rumors for a long time but to...

Re: 529 State Tax Re-capture

Are you sure rollovers to another state plans are subject to recapture in IN? I moved from MO to another state and the state's Deputy Treasurer confirmed that "Rollovers to another state's qualified 529 plan are not taxable for MO income tax purposes and are not subject to recapture"

Buying Acura MDX from Carmax

Hi, Looking to get advice on two things, I) Buying a used car from CarMax and any experiences you might have had with them and II) Your thoughts on 2014 Acura MDX AED vs the new Honda Pilot EXL AWD? Re: Help evaluate! Federal Government employment vs. Private sector

Thanks for all the opinions guys!! I really appreciate it. The agency I am looking at is SEC/CFTC type :) The offer from Charlotte is from a huge utility. Given that the base from Fed is the same as base + bonus from private company.. monetarily, the decision boils down to high COL vs low COL and pe...

Re: Help evaluate! Federal Government employment vs. Private sector

Thanks so much for the replies.. I really appreciate it! I believe I am prepared for the high COL but have no idea of what a Federal job is like and what alternatives I will have if this does not work out. Is it easy to move to other Federal agencies/departments? Although many have talked about the ...

Re: Help evaluate! Federal Government employment vs. Private sector

Thanks rgs92 and MrNE for the replies! I have visited both cities but never stayed there long. During my consulting days I was working with a client 2-3 blocks away from the White House and loved it.. even the VA burbs are nice (not seen the MD ones). But to make things confusing, I like Charlotte a...

Re: Help evaluate! Federal Government employment vs. Private sector

Thanks Thirteen... the 175k is after negotiation and factoring in the locality pay. I have not talked about relocation expenses, although the job posting had relocation marked clearly as "No". I will talk to them about sign on bonus etc. Based on your reply it seems that there may room for...

Help evaluate! Federal Government employment vs. Private sector

Hi All, I have two job offers that I am evaluating. A federal government (one of the financial regulatory agencies) one in Washington DC and one in the private sector in Charlotte, NC. - Equal final salary in dollar terms (175K in Fed vs. 140K + 20% bonus in Private) - No pension in the private sect...

Disneyworld Orlando in March

Hi, I am taking my son to Disney world in March.. There will be another family joining us, so a total of 4 adults and 2 kids (age around 6 years). Has anyone booked a condo/apartment nearby using AirBnB or something similar? Experiences? Recommendations? I will be there 3 full days (Sat, Sun and Mon...
