How to publish a Google Docs spreadsheet for viewing:

  1. Login to Google Docs
  2. Create your spreadsheet (or upload from Excel).
Note that Data Validation (same as Excel Tools --> Data Validation) is supported, but will NOT be imported or exported. IOW, Excel files will lose functionality during the export / import.
Mixed text formatting within the same cell is not supported. A text cell with mixed underlining and colors will not be shown correctly. If the entire cell is one format, that will be OK.
  1. (Upper right corner) Share --> See who has access and verify all is correct.
  2. (Upper right corner) Share --> Publish as a web page. A dialog box appears with the URL. Verify that /key? is embedded in the URL. If you see /ccc? it's not published.
  3. Logout from Google Docs, clear all browser cookies from Google.com domain. Leave the Bogleheads.org cookie.
  4. Test that your spreadsheet is indeed viewable using the published URL.
