I've been looking through WBern's reading list
Has anyone read Global Investing: The Professional's Guide to the World Capital Markets
Wbern describes it as:
| Quote: | | by Roger Ibbotson and Gary Brinson. This is a beautifully written volume on the history of investible assets. An informed investor cannot know enough about market history, and this is the best single source in this area. Want to know: what the returns for US stocks have been in each of the past 200 years? The price of gold for the past 500 years? Interest rates and inflation for the past 800 years? It’s all here. As implied by the title, the authors also provide an excellent perspective on the place of foreign assets in a diversified portfolio, and provide some worthwhile insights on portfolio theory and the efficiency of the marketplace. |
It looks interesting and searching inside it on Amazon makes me want to get it. Surprisingly it's not on Google Books.

I thought it was exactly as wbern advertised but it (at least the data) was already a bit dated when I read it and that was years ago. _________________ @-->-->--

Thanks for the comment!
I can work around that because newer data appears obtainable.
What kind of data do they supply? Is by annual returns or just something like charts?

Hi stratton
Its a mix; most of the pie graphs have % broken out; but a lot of the data is in graphs or in tables but summed and analyzed over a decade or more (not year by year).
The nice thing about the book was how all the global data was put together. Snapshot graphs of the world capital markets, country returns, compound, over decades, regressed against the world market returns for correlations. Ie it would have been a wonderful thing to put out annually as a yearbook.
Most of the data is available but a fair amount of it, at least the global returns, are summed in tables (say compound return over 1970-1990) so I am not sure it would be say as easy to supplement as if it were broken down by actual annual returns.
I seem to remember gold, inflation, US and UK equities and long term bond yields actually being broken down into discrete annual data.
Sorry I know that does not help much. If you have a specific data set or three you are looking for as an example I can happily look at the book and tell you exactly how that data is presented and see if it helps you get a feel for what is within.
Its about a 300 page 5x8 book with lots of logical, flowing, intelligent text covering global investing; while nothing Bernstein wrote is incorrect, that size should give you an idea of the granularity of the data presented; ie this definitely is not the "CRC handbook of chemistry and physics" for investors if that is what you meant; think of a feel closer to Gibson's text on asset allocation as a reference point.
Used sells for 9 bucks or less on Amazon, its probably not going to be the worst money you ever spent on a book (but then I tend to buy books like this just to have, I basically bought it just because wbern listed it). _________________ @-->-->--

Thanks.
I think I'll pick up a used one. I'm going to read the few books on Dr. Bill's Book List.
