Not sure what you mean by a 'guide'

Are you challenging the Exam? That is, do you hold a CFA, PhD (finance), DBA, CPA, CLU, JD or ChFC and you're looking for some comprehensive study material?

Guide = If someone were challenging the exam, what study guide would you recommend for them?

or

If someone had taken the course, which guide would you recommend for them?

thanks,

I would recommend you take a live review.

The 'Live Reviewers' must be approved by the CFP Board, and you can see the list of about 30 or so approved Live Review programs at
http://www.cfp.net/become/reviewcourse.asp#top

Some of these are 'in residence' and some are on-line.

I have spoken with students who have completed the Keir, Zahn, Kaplan and the College for Financial Planning sessions.

6 of one, half-dozen of another...all of them will provide a comprehensive review of covered material, emphasizing how the material will be tested. But most of the favorable responses have come from the Kaplan/Schwesser review. And although I've gotten good feedback on the Zahn review, I'm not sure its worth the added cost.

I'm taking the six courses through a local university. Each course is 10 weeks long and meet one night a week for 3hrs. After I complete the six courses they have a 30 hour, 4 day review session to prepare you for the actual board exam.

They use the Keir textbooks which are very detailed.

I'm currently taking the fourth class so we'll see how effective they are! Laughing

If you don't mind my asking about your course.....

1. Which college offers this?
2. With 6 courses, does this mean they divided Intro and Insurance into two courses?
3. Which financial calculator do they recommend or do they teach from only one calculator?
4. With 6 courses at 10 weeks each, is the full course over 15 months, start to finish?
5. What primary study materials do you use?
6. From a timing standpoint, how much time is there (in weeks) between the completion of the course and the next CFP Comprehensive Exam?

Thanks

Florida Gulf Coast University http://midas.fgcu.edu/cob-u/cfp/

Yes, Intro & Insurance were separate.
3. Which financial calculator do they recommend or do they teach from only one calculator?
They will allow any calculator, but only teach to the HP-12C
4. With 6 courses at 10 weeks each, is the full course over 15 months, start to finish?
Roughly. I started this past January and should finish around next April.
5. What primary study materials do you use?
Keir Summary & Case Studies
6. From a timing standpoint, how much time is there (in weeks) between the completion of the course and the next CFP Comprehensive Exam?
I should finish the last course around April and take the exam in July. However there is the 4 day review course in between which I don't have the exact dates for yet.

I could have used an online, self-paced program like Kaplan but I do much better in a classroom setting. I didn't feel the online program would have as much of a benefit.

Go to the website of a CFP program at a college and look at their required textbooks. I looked UCLA's. They use Kaplan books. The authors of Kaplan books were (still are?) on the CFP exam board.

I starting taking the online CFP 6-course sequence through Kaplan last year. I am not in financial services, nor do I plan on a future finance career, but thought this would be useful learning. It has been useful, but the Kaplan textbooks are really lousy, and you get what you pay for in terms of support from your online instructor. I have heard good things about the prep course though.

Fire5, do you have the required experience, or will you challenge the exam then go into the industry? Just curious (in case I change my mind...)
