Been a weird season so far huh?

Well it's the eve of Texas-OU and until last year I would have said the path to the national championship is on the line. But time to put 2008 to rest. As easy as the Longhorn schedule is this year, we HAVE to win this game to play in the BCS. Beat OU!

Feel free to add any other college football related comments to this thread. Florida or Bama? USC or Notre Dame? Love the BCS or hate it? Just remember to keep it civil. SoonerSunDevil and I went a long way towards getting each other banned from the site last year. Not sure why he's gone but now I have to admit I miss having him around.

Should be a good game tomorrow morning. With a 6 am local time kickoff, I'll be sipping my coffee and eating fried eggs as I cheer on the Horns. HOOK 'EM

My god when is Notre Dame ever going to be able to beat USC again? If they are ever going to do it, this year is probably the best since 2005. Should be a good game...I know the Irish will be fired up. I'm praying for snow.

diasurfer you are so right. The Horns must win tomorrow! They're going to have to play better than they have so far this season. I have a 10 am start time so it's Bloody Marys for me.

Here I am, almost 50, and I am still waiting for my California Golden Bears (aka "The Chicago Cubs of College Football") to play in a Rose Bowl in my lifetime. We had high hopes this season, but alas...

They do play in the Rose Bowl Stadium every other year, and that's where they'll be tomorrow afternoon. I've made the last few trips to Pasadena for the UCLA game, with Cal losing every time. I'll settle for watching tomorrow's game on television.

Big day tomorrow. Texas needs a win to stay in the BCS Championship hunt and Notre Dame needs to win to give Charlie Weis job security.

Personal story that USC fans will appreciate: In 2003 I am in my hometown of New Orleans. I'm good friends with a high school football coach his family. I go to one of their games and I'm sitting with the coach's wife and family.A guy who plays for the coach's team fields a punt and puts on a spectacular display of speed, elusiveness and just plain raw ability like I had never seen from a high school player. After he ran back the punt about 70 yards, I looked at the coach's wife with stunned amazement and asked, "Who is that!?"

She replied, "That's Joe McKnight. He's in the 9th grade."

If you are watching USC-Notre Dame, McKnight wears #4 and is a running back for USC.

OU will win today, which moves Virginia Tech to 3rd in the polls. Alabama will win against a concussed Tim Tebow in the SEC Championship which will set up a rematch of the college kickoff, VT verses the Tide for the BCS title.

Tech will win, Frank Beamer will be coach of the year and will get his own statue outside of Lane Stadium.

Folks nationally will recognize that orange and maroon look really nice together and there will be a shortage of orange dye/t-shirts. I would reccomend investing in any company that can produce both burnt orange and chicago maroon clothing.

Alabama and Texas will run the table to set up #1 SEC vs. #1 Big 12. In the end, Alabama vs. Texas in the BCS title is the game of the year without any controversy. Alabama would love to redo the last two games of the season again if we get a perfect regular season. In any case, one SEC team will play in Pasadena.

Of course, there will be many surprises and upsets in college football, and I am rooting for the Sooners for the upset. That pretty much kills Texas hope for the national title. Bring on VTech.

Until this year, I was a HUGE college football fan, however, until they create a fair playoff system, I decided that I'm out! I still try to catch a big game or two here or there, but I have come to realize that it doesn't matter what happens from week to week; the same teams with the same pollsters will always be playing for the so called "national title."

I've got no dog in the hunt since my Aggies are horrendous lately (there's always next year, right?). Bama looks really good this year, and as much as it pains me to say it, I wouldn't mind UT making a go of it. I was in Austin with my UT buddies when they won in 06 and it was a blast! Gig 'em Horns.

The bottom half of your avatar is bit hard on the eyes: such a juxtaposition with the top.

While Cal has had a good run, it's still going to take ten to twelve (depending on who you ask) more straight wins to even things up. And with Stanford's stealth Secretary of State recruiter that may not be possible.

I cannot bring myself to say anything against USC since my avatar played on the line there alongside his teammate Marion Morrison.

I'm sure you and I can agree on one thing other than index investing: the conspiratorial east-coast-sports-media-complex bias against the Pac-10, the Conference of Champions.

Beat Cal,

All I can say is WAY TO GO BOILERS!

I know that Purdue is 2 and 5 now, but they were close on several games. They just need to learn how to finish. I hoping that Danny Hope (I know, Rolling Eyes ) can start changing this team. Might not make a bowl this year (likely not), but he'll start getting the program ready for next year.

I root for BCS chaos.

I'd like to see Boise St. vs. Texas Christian in the BCS title game.

but I'm happy anyway, since it looks like we may have kept Notre Dame out of BCS bowl eligibility this year (but you never know). actually I'm surprised they don't put Notre Dame in the BCS championship game every year, and then give the title to Notre Dame regardless of the final score.

What? It took over 30 minutes for someone to call me out on that? Wink Are the BCS haters going soft?

I'll have to admit that I like the BCS if I end up making my second trip to the Rose Bowl in 4 years. Beautiful setting, classic bowl game, and who knows - maybe we come away with another national championship.

The Horns certainly don't look like a national championship team on a consistent basis. Our offense looked embarrassingly out of sorts at times on saturday. But it's been a weird season where IMO nobody has looked totally dominant. I think there are several teams that could win the Rose Bowl if they put their best game together for a full 60 minutes.

Glad to see some happy Purdue fans - would be nice to NOT see Ohio State after January 1 this year. But where's the love for those Iowa Hawkeyes?

Well that's true, only about halfway through. Texas still has tough games on the road with Oklahoma State and Mizzou and Kansas at home. The Aggies have become a punchline though - maybe this is the year Baylor finishes out of the basement in the B12 South.

But come on man - the Hawkeyes are 7-0! you can't tell me you aren't fired up about that!

Unbelievably fired up! But 5 games is a long way to go. I have season tickets, and we have three home games left. Should be a great three games, but the two road games are obviously the biggest tests. It starts this weekend at MSU.

Every year about this time, everyone is gnashing their teeth about which undefeated team is going to be shafted out of the national title game. Then the usual conference road upsets occur, and everyone is debating which one-loss team deserves to go.

Assuming they both stay undefeated, and it looks like they should = Florida vs Alabama for SEC title game will be the game of the year, and likely better than national championship. Can't wait for it.

If Florida wins, and I hope they do, they will likely play Texas for the title, which would make a great parting gift to college football fans with Tebow vs McCoy in their final collegiate game. Tebow should be raising the trophy again.

Texas looked terrible against an injury plagued Oklahoma team.

Florida or Alabama would likely beat the snot out of Texas, or any other team they played for that matter.

About time we heard from an SEC homer!

Correction: Texas offense looked terrible against a healthy and as always very good Oklahoma defense. Texas defense has carried the team.

If Florida can beat Arkansas on a field goal with 9 seconds remaining, at home, well then I guess they can beat the snot out of just about anybody, can't they?

Alabama will probably lose to Florida, and will have to settle for crushing whoever they end up playing in the BCS, just like last year against Utah. Or am I remembering that wrong?

It looks more and more like Florida and Alabama will meet in the SEC championship game as a de facto semifinal for the national title game. One of them will fight for SEC's fourth straight national championship. RTR!

It's a good thing that neither OSU or OU will get to the final bowl game. Let Texas, if they remain unbeaten, or USC try this time.

Florida is hurting, 1st and 2nd string DTs out, starting MLB hurt, receivers limping. Tebow is coming off a concussion, maybe still a little bit slowed by it. On top of that no one has stepped up to replace Harvin or Murphy.

We could easily lose a couple. If, and I think it is a big if, we can get through the next few weeks without a loss, we may have some guys back/well by the time the SEC championship game rolls around and we may have a shot. Maybe by then Thompson will be able to start to fill the gap left by Harvin's departure.

Anyway you look at it though, it is going to be tough to get back to the BCS championship game.

Yes, Florida is struggling, comparatively. Injuries, breaking in a new OC, and the lack of a deep threat have all hurt the Gators. Yet they're undefeated.

Unless the injury bug continues, they should make it to Atlanta. Bama will be a tough nut to crack, no doubt, but the Gators have one thing that no else in the country has: Tim Tebow. He's able to put that team on his back and carry them to a W.

Fox had this little article:

http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/p....o=10244386

Florida's strength of schedule is low so any loss should cause the Gators to fall a lot. The only saving grace would be that if we can get back to the SEC championship, we will play a #1 or #2 Alabama team, assuming Alabama wins out. A victory over the Tide, if we can get it, should be enough to send us back, even if we have a loss. The really interesting question is who would the opponent be? Right now it looks to be Texas, but a loss by Texas would really open things up. If the Hawkeyes win out, I can certainly see their case for going to the BCS championship game.

I was pretty impressed with TCU tonight. I think they deserve their ranking.

I'm rooting for a Boise State-TCU match-up. If all the other teams have two losses, and they both finish out undefeated and ranked in the top ten....it could happen.

I think the overall talent level, at least among the top teams, is down this year compared to last year. I think last year's teams from Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, and USC are better than any team this year. Obviously there is a lot of parity in college football and just about any team can beat another team (Stanford beating USC, anyone?). I think, however, that the top teams of this year are just not as good as the top teams from last year. Those four teams would beat any of the top teams from this year in my opinion.

Pat Dooley of the Gainesville (FL) Sun had the following in his column this morning:

Quote:
It’s pretty obvious after the results of Saturday’s games around the country that we thought we were tuning in to watch “The Miss America Pageant” and instead we are getting “Survivor.” And Florida was not voted off the island Saturday night.

which pretty well sums it up.

Of note, Jeff Sagarin at USA today now has the Pac-10 as the toughest conference.

Hawkeyes survive and advance! 3 winnable home games remain, along with the tilt in Columbus.

I agree that the top teams aren't as impressive this year as they have been in year's past. If Iowa does manage to go undefeated, they can make it a game with any of the other top teams.

Oregon State came close this past weekend and the Oregon Ducks will finish the job of defeating USC on Halloween. The Ducks are the only undefeated team within the PAC 10 (one loss to Boise State).

Although I think Mr. Sagarin has Stanford overvalued at #23. At that price I will be shorting the Cardinal.

Coach Harbaugh has done a fine job on the Farm. It's great for the conference that the Stanford and Washington programs have had life pumped back into them, and I think we will be talking about Stanford QB Andrew Luck for many years to come. However, I'm trying to find a 6th win for Stanford to make them bowl-eligible and I'm not seeing it. The remaining schedule of Oregon, @USC, Big Game and Notre Dame is brutal. Their best bet might be to catch the Ducks on a letdown the week after their USC game.

Just read on Yahoo! that Sam Bradford was at least wise enough to take out an insurance policy on his future earnings before returning for his fateful junior year.

Smart, but if he has to deal with an insurance company to capture his millions, I wish him luck in his adventure.

Sam Bradford's father works for State Farm and the policy is through SF. The hell that SF would catch from denying Sam Bradford a claim on his policy would probably force them to leave the state of Oklahoma from a lack of business and angry former customers, although I don't think Sam has a claim on his policy at this point.

Same goes for the insurance company that decides they don't want to pay a claim on Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow from Texas and Florida, respectively. All three of those QBs are wildly popular and it would be a PR nightmare for any insurance company to go against the entire fan bases of those respective schools.

Not a 'Bama fan here, but they are gonna be tough. Squeaking by Tennessee Sat in some ways was more impressive than a blow-out win - they found a way to do what they had to (quote above) to win. That is the kind of team that often wins a championship.

If kicking field goals and blocking the other team's kicks are the keys to going all the way, then make way for the Alabama Crimson Tide!

The year Ohio State beat Miami for the nat'l championship they needed a TD pass on 4th and 10 to stay undefeated. There's luck involved, to be sure.

Even more worrisome than the likely harm to professional players is:
Quote:
More than a million children play high school football, and hundreds are seriously injured by concussions every season — many of them by imitating their N.F.L. heroes and playing through pain.

I've often wondered if the helmets couldn't undergo a radical redesign - maybe even a hard rubber helmet with a jelly-foam type of snug fitting liner?

Wait a minute... you mean Ohio State has actually won a national title game? Shocked

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Actually, that Ohio State - Miami game was probably the best championship game I have seen. An example of "determination to win" beating out a more talented team.

If a race car driver doesn't break his skull, certainly baseball and football can do better.

Halloween game of the week: USC at Oregon.

Of note, Jeff Sagarin at USA today now has the Pac-10 as the toughest conference.

Thanks in no small part to UCLA, the worst team in the Pac-10, beating Tennessee, a mid-level SEC team that played Alabama even on Saturday.

Not to take anything away from OSU and Jarrett Payton, but the loss of Willis McGahee was devastating, IMO.

I say we go back to this:

Seriously, part of the problem today I think is that the players are so well protected that they use their equipment (helmet, pads) as an offensive weapon. A helmet and shoulder pads are optimized for a straight on hit - so a player can deliver a heck of a blow to an unready player because he can control the impact.

Go back to the old sandlot days - you didn't hit as hard because it hurt you as much as it hurt the other guy. You focused instead on the tackle, not how hard you could hit.
