The chapter is only modestly active, and the leader (George) has recently handed over the reins. I would suggest sending an e-mail to HoustonDiehards@yahoo.com, and George can forward you the e-mail of the new leader.

Have you been to any of the Houston meetings? I see that you have been a prolific contributor to this forum for well over a year.....

Best wishes.

No.

George PM'ed me and said the same thing, but that the new person seems to have disappeared.

I see that you have been a prolific contributor over several years. Maybe you or one of the other seasoned Houston Boglies could take over? :D

NE and I did speak by PM. I'm still in the middle of transitioning my parents to Independent Living here in Houston from another state. That project consumes a huge amount of my time, and requires travel, but I certainly would like to know about any Rick Ferri Book Club meeting held in the local area.

If someone wants to volunteer to take over the leadership of the Houston Local Chapter, just let me know and I'll have the contact information changed on the Local Chapters Map.

I think it is safe to assume that the Houston chapter isn't very active. But since you were the one who invited Rick Ferri to the Houston meeting, it would be very appropriate for you to set up the meeting. No, you don't have to become the leader of future meetings, just this one. Pick a restaurant - one that has either a large room for maybe a dozen guests - or one that has enough room to put a few tables together for the Bogleheads that show up. Coordinate the time with Rick, and send a note to the e-mail distribution list that George has. Or you can put the info on this site. Simple as that.

I will be there (unless I have a conflict with the date).

Best wishes.

Houston is 4 hours from my home. We have relatives living there, so we have a place to stay.

Most weekends are available in January, February and March. Just give me a few options.

New Rydex funds

Post by Mazz »

Rick,

Do you have an opinion on the new equal weighted sector / equal weighted position Rydex Funds?

I have been doing equal weighted sectors for years using Sector Spiders, but these new equal weighted sectors funds from Rydex look very appealing.

Here is the tickers for a most of them:

Rydex S&P Equal Weight Consumer Discretionary ETF - RCD
Rydex S&P Equal Weight Consumer Staples ETF - RHS
Rydex S&P Equal Weight Energy ETF - RYE
Rydex S&P Equal Weight Financial ETF – RYF
Rydex S&P Equal Weight Health Care ETF - RYH
Rydex S&P Equal Weight Industrials ETF - RGI
Rydex S&P Equal Weight Materials ETF - RTM
Rydex S&P Equal Weight Technology ETF – RYT
Rydex S&P Equal Weight Utilities ETF - RYU

The equal sectors/ equal positions funds are:
Rydex Russell 1000® Equal Weight ETF - EWRI
Rydex Russell 2000® Equal Weight ETF - EWRS
Rydex Russell Midcap® Equal Weight ETF - EWRM

Location suggestion for Rick Ferri meeting

Post by Abbey »

The Cafe Express north of the Galleria has a couple of room-like divisions. We might be able to use one of them. No doors, but I don't think they'd charge us to use the area... just need to order some food.
The address is 1101 Uptown Park Blvd # 12, Houston - (713) 963-9222

Do we have a meeting place yet?

Also, I need to email one person a handout who will disseminate to the rest of the group. Who should I send it too?

Not yet. Suggestions are welcome.

Historically the Houston Bogleheads have met at Luby's I believe (I have never attended). Maybe the following is a good one:
Luby's Cafeteria
1743 Post Oak Boulevard
Houston, Texas 77056
http://lubys.com/en/subpages/Locations/ ... .asp?ID=81

Thoughts anyone?

I can comment on the Luby's location. After trying many other locations, all of which were really difficult for some people to reach, or too small or whatever, the above Luby's location was recommended by a participant. It's centrally located in Houston (if there is such a thing), and was "equally difficult" for everyone to reach right after work. I don't remember it having a meeting room, like some Luby's locations do. We just pushed a couple of tables together. Since we had a small group, pretty much everyone could hear even during dinnertime.

There's another Luby's that has a meeting room. For a more formal meeting (speaker, presentation), the meeting room might be really useful. I'm pretty sure this is the contact info:

Houston #4
2730 Fondren Road
Houston , Texas 77063 USA
Phone: (713) 785-5240

It's essentially Westheimer and Fondren. We met there a few times. The meeting room is available to groups if one checks with the manager first. Again, we met there a few times but changed because this location was difficult for some people right after work. On Saturday people might have enough time to travel.

Houston Bogleheads,

I talked to the manager at the Luby's location in the Galleria area. She said Saturday is the slowest day and she will section some 20 seats off for us of. When you enter, go to the left. Supposedly kids eat for free on Saturdays, so I hope it won't be too noisy.

Date: Saturday, January 15, 2011
Time: 2:00 pm
Location:
Luby's Cafeteria
1743 Post Oak Boulevard
Houston, Texas 77056

Also, you probably want to print out the following PDF slides that go along with his presentation:
http://www.filedropper.com/ferripassiveppt

tdhg566, thanks for contacting the other Luby's location! Since they can't give us the meeting room, I thought the Galleria area location is more centrally located.

Thanks, and I will see you tomorrow. However, I cannot access this presentation. It seems to want to download a program onto my computer, which isn't gonna happen. If there is another way to access the presentation please let me know. Otherwise, I will hope Rick brings a few hard copies.

Best wishes.

Great 2 plus hour presentation by Rick, with full question and answer session making a strong case for index investing over active management. Thanks for this Rick and giving your time. Bigfoot

Rick, thanks! I enjoyed the presentation and the discussion.

Glad the Bogleheads behaved - probably because you brought your ladies entourage.

livesoft, does this mean you are off your worst-day strategy?

Who was the young chap who volunteered to organize the next meeting? I am all for it.

Thank you, Rick, for your very informative presentation and discussion. Sometimes we all need to be reminded to stick with indexing.

No, because that is not active trading. That's a rebalancing and/or TLH strategy. ;)

I agree with keeping the group going, as it was benefical to learn from others who have experience. I thought the location was a little noisy but we had a larger group, but noticed it was substantially better later in the afternoon around 3:00 pm, so maybe that is a better time.

The question on life strategy and target retirement funds and the differences are facinating. A quick look confirms that the investments in these funds are different, with the target retirement being all index and the life strategy having the asset allocator fund in a limited percentage. The target retirement fund is closer to the formulation here for the core 3 or core 4 models.

For our next meeting, I think some discussion facilitated by members that have some specialized knowledge would be beneficial such as estate planning and insurance, and tax advantaged investing. Bigfoot

Rick, thanks for taking time out of your weekend to give the presentation. Your book covers some topics I'm interested in learning more about.

I would be interested in another chapter meeting, as I have lots of topics and questions that are of interest to me...microcaps anyone :)

For others around the country check out this book, Rick covers some interesting market history relative to passive investing.

Luby's was OK as a location, agree with Bigfoot on his time suggestion.

Hope to see you all later this year.
