How closely does VGPMX track VGENX? I've held the Precious Metals and Mining Fund for a long, long time. I know it's not a pure gold fund, but it has a good portion of assets in gold mining stocks. Now that everybody and his brother is touting gold, I wonder if I wouldn't be better off in the future with the the Vanguard Energy Fund. I suspect that VGPMX could take a much larger fall than VGENX in these times of peak oil. I consider both of these funds speculative.

The last 10 years yes.
Not if you go back to 1984.
You see that gold miners were pretty dead until 1999.
