Are there still people in the South Bay/LA area that are interested in meeting up? I just finished studying for the Level III CFA exam and have some new-found free time. I'd be interested in meeting some fellow Bogleheads to exchange ideas, etc.

Hello LA Bogleheads,
I will be in Anaheim, CA, for a media event the evening of October 10 (Saturday). Any wish to meet for coffee that afternoon before the event? I will be staying at the Sheraton in Anaheim, close to Disneyland.

Great! I will email you once I have a better handle on my schedule. I am thinking about 3-4 in the afternoon in or near the Anaheim Convention Center.

Rick, I would love to meet for coffee, but unfortunately I will be out of town that weekend. It's too bad because I was really hoping to talk with you about your career and your work as an advisor.
I recently passed Level III of the CFA exam and I am hoping to make a transition into investment/wealth management. So far the difficulty has been finding firms that adhere to the same principles that I do. I have spoken with a few, but most are too small to realistically bring someone like myself in. Any thoughts/advice you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everybody,
I'm curious to know if people have been successfully meeting up in the LA area. I've been a risk manager for an institutional firm for the past three years and also just completed the level III CFA exam. Rick, I agree your practive looks interesting. I personally have had a lot of success combining Graham's ideas on asset allocation (based on The Intelligent Investor) with the Boglehead view of low fees and passive management. It would be great to meet some other like minded folks in the area to exchange ideas.
Cheers! |

There were 2 or 3 meetings held a couple of years ago, but, it appears that interest has died out or there is no one stepping up to organize such a meeting. _________________ Bob |

Hi,
There have been various meeting at different places over a few years. One problem has been a lack of a place to meet. I am going to suggest Philippes. It is inexpensive, has a parking lot, plenty of space to meet, and can be reached by the Metro with a short walk. http://www.philippes.com/ Is anyone interested? _________________ Best Wishes,

I may be interested depending on the time and date of the meeting. It is very hard to pass up a double dip with straight chili. _________________ Petrocelli (not the real Rico, but just a fan) |

Hi,
I am going to out of town this week, but any time in November might work for me. What would be best for you guys: a Saturday or Sunday in the afternoon? How about the 14th or 15th of November? Any other suggestions?
Yea, the double dip is good. _________________ Best Wishes,

I have a proposition for a meeting place and time.
My criteria were: near freeway off-ramp(s), free parking, low cost, and a "meeting room" so that we wouldn't interfere with other people using the facility. I found all that and more, so I went ahead and made a tentative reservation.
Place: Spires Restaurant, 10900 Alondra Blvd, Cerritos, CA (562) 865-2717
It is near the intersection of the 605 and 91 freeways with the 5 near-by. It is located on the south side of Alondra Blvd, between the 605 and Studebaker, near Cerritos College.
Time: Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 1-4pm
Features:
* lots of free parking
* we can have half of the restaurant during that time (there is a movable divider wall)
* breakfast is served all day
* you don't have to buy anything--water is free
* they are willing to write individual orders, each person pays for himself/herself
* we can move some of the tables around if the group is small
--and--
* free wi-fi
I don't have a topic in mind and have never been to a bogleheads meeting, so please suggest something if you are willing to make it happen. Else it will be an informal get-together.
If this interests you, please post here or send me a PM. I will keep a head count and as long as we have 6 to 100 people, we can do this. If you will bring someone with you, let me know that it will be 2 people. I'll post the current head count occasionally to keep this thread "current".

Hi,
Celia has proposed a time and place for a meeting. It is close to two freeways. I plan to be there. I hope some of the other Bogleheads in the area can make it. _________________ Best Wishes,

He Celia, I plan to be there.
I also have not attended a bogleheads meeting before, so at the outset I don't have a really clear picture of a possible agenda. But maybe we can start brainstorming on what topics we are knowledgeable about and want to share, or are not so knowledgeable about and want to learn more. For example most of my job, and reading for fun is focused on investment topics more related to portfolio management...passive/active strategies, asset allocation etc...what I would like to learn more about is retirement planning from a taxation standpoint. Benefits of 401K vs. IRA vs. Roth IRA...appropriate asset allocation if you are balancing investments in a taxable account with one of those above. Or even what you folks do if your 401K provider does not offer many low fee passively managed funds (this is my situation).
Just a thought, please feel free to post other ideas!

| Ok, I'd like to come too, but I'm also a first timer so I have no idea what to expect. If it's just to meet some good people and chat, that'll be great. I'll check back here to see if details have changed. Thanks to those who've set it up. |

This is what I had in mind too. So far, we have 4 of us. Others are welcome to join us. Please post or PM me so I can confirm the headcount with the restaurant. |

It was a disappointing turn-out; some contacted me beforehand due to emergencies, but I did not want to cancel for the ones who were already planning to go.
I think we are too-spread out geographically to make this work well. Maybe a regularly scheduled meeting would help. But for now, the interest is not there for LA/Orange.
We found out there is also an antique car show in the parking lot on the 2nd Saturday of each month. Would advertising this bring a bigger turn-out? |

Hi Celia,
That was the problem in the past too. The drive was long, but we had as many as 5-6.
When we organized the 403baware meetings and investment workshops for LAUSD teachers, sometimes 1 or 2 teachers would show and other times with a little publicity and support from the teachers union (UTLA), over 50 would show up.
Good luck,

On my browser, bogleheads.org shows
Los Angeles / South Bay Chapter Mtg. November 14,
and the first post was by PaddyOh in 2008.
Why should I bother to read a thread about a meeting that occurred a year ago? However, after seeing the thread keep reappearing over the last few weeks, I decided to take a look, but I am too late for this meeting.
Next time you schedule a meeting, perhaps you should start a new thread so it is not dated from years ago. You might be able to get the year onto bogleheads.org if you use LA instead of Los Angeles (this will depend on the view used by the individual).
Just a thought. |
