Interesting. It appears that the forum software automatically converts a double space after a period to a single space.

After the original version of this sentence is 1 space. Continuation.

After the original version of this sentence is 2 spaces. Continuation.

After the original version of this sentence is 3 spaces. Continuation.

And for all 3 test sentences above, there was conversion to a single space...

The forum software isn't collapsing the spaces. They are still there as shown below. Your browser is doing it, following the behavior prescribed by HTML rules. (Cf. Why don't space characters show on Web pages?.) If you need to have multiple spaces preserved, use a "code" block, as I've done below with text quoted from your post:

Code: Select all

After the original version of this sentence is 1 space.  Continuation. [ actually there are 2 spaces ]
After the original version of this sentence is 2 spaces.  Continuation.
After the original version of this sentence is 3 spaces.   Continuation.
See Outputting code or fixed width data in the Wiki for more info.

Thanks for providing a clear explanation.

There's just one minor point - Outputting code or fixed width data is from the forum FAQ, located at the top right corner, to the right of the Forum Policy.

If you hover your mouse over each code it will explain what it does and how.

Code: Select all

Produces the following:
  • First bullet
  • Second bullet
  • Third bullet
Want it numbered, use list=1
  1. First bullet
  2. Second bullet
  3. Third bullet
Want it to use alpha characters, use list=a
  1. First bullet
  2. Second bullet
  3. Third bullet
Using list=i
  1. First bullet
  2. Second bullet
  3. Third bullet

Click Select all on my post and then copy the code and give it a try. Or click Quote on my post and you can see the structure that I used.

What Movie Have You Recently Watched? is showing spoilers in comments. Here's how to do it correctly.

The forum post style alternates between 2 background colors. To do a proper spoiler alert, set the text color equal to the background color. When you select the text, the text color will be inverted and the text will appear.

The first background color is #ECF3F7, the second background color is #E1EBF2. Use the "Font color" button in the post editing toolbar (2nd from right) to modify the colors.

For example:

Code: Select all

[color=#ECF3F7]Spoiler text background 1.[/color]
will appear as: Spoiler text background 1. <--- select this text to view. This post is background 2, note how the text is slightly visible.

Code: Select all

[color=#E1EBF2]Spoiler text background 2.[/color]
will appear as: Spoiler text background 2. <--- select this text to view. <--- This post is background 2, no text can be seen. Use this one here.

The post is background color 1. No text can be seen unless it's selected.

Code: Select all

will appear as: Spoiler text background 1. <--- select this text to view.

Testing bug reported by digarei in Software upgrade bug report: e-mail address parsing

Posting:

Code: Select all

adds an extra period to the end of the email address - even though it was not initially entered. It shows up in this post after Preview was hit.

Bogleheads forum user name to: Sacramento.Bogleheads@gmail.com....

This is a confirmed bug and is fixed in phpBB 3.1.4. See discussion here.

Second option is copy the content you want to quote (could be from the earlier post or from another website) and in your reply hit the "Quote" button, paste the content you want to quote and then hit the Quote button.

Same goes for bold/italics/underline etc.
Just trying out some quote replies!

1. Including a link is easy. No more entering html code. Just paste the link url. That's it! For example, here's a link to Vanguard home page:

2. Formatting text is easy. Just highlight a block of text, hit the 'B' button for bold, 'i' for italics, 'u' for underline. For example:

I am trying to test what the difference is between posting a google plus image as a simple URL and included between img tag

Here is the simple URL https://goo.gl/photos/g9mXaHXvqgYs7XCW8

when i use the same link between image (it is a jpg image), preview spits out an error "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image. Please verify that the URL you entered is correct."

Clicking on the simple URL, then the image --> View image (in Firefox) results in this URL:

Code: Select all

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2F1MsksIs6puOL7r3RLtTsIQC4z4HuW2X_tmNmEj_-s0oE57tBm4eluXdRfUTCb6XGjKJqVJT29I=w1653-h864-no
Placing that URL inside the Image
[/code]
Displays as:
Image
However, it's low resolution and you can't see the details as shown in the full-size version.
