Hi Mel,
Breakout sessions usually run in parallel, and participants can attend only one of them. Are you planning something like that, or we will have two consecutive sessions that would be in parallel with book signing but not with each other?
Victoria
Hi Victoria:
They will be informal but interesting chat/discussion sessions on a number of topics rather than formal presentations and they will run in parallel. We simply don't have the time or space to handle it any other way.
Hi Mel,
Will the breakout sessions be defined by their topics, or they will be mini-panels with ad-hoc discussions based on the participants' questions? If the former, will you be asking for topic proposals?
Thank you,
Victoria

Hi Again Victoria:
The session topics will be clearly defined and the leaders will be well-known authorities in the subject matter. However, the sessions will be informal, and there will be a lot of time for give-and-take questions and answers with the different authorities. And you'll be free to move from one session to another if you desire.
UPDATE: As requested, here's an update on where we stand with the registrations.
We have now received paid registrations for 90% of the available seats. Only 10% remain and we still have lots of reservation requests outstanding, so if you're planning on attending, now would be the prudent time to act to make sure you don't get shut out. Our events always sell out early, and from all indications, that's going to be the case again this year. Act now to get your reservation in for this special event.
I'm happy to see that Bogleheads 12 will be another sell out! Based on our past experience, I remember that the last 10% goes faster than people realize.
Unfortunately, Patti and I will miss the conference this year due to a long-planned trip out of the country. We've only missed one other conference since we attended our first in Denver in 2004. We'll really miss seeing all of our Boglehead friends this year, but look forward to reconnecting with everyone again at the next Bogleheads conference.
Hopefully, Victoria will publish her fabulous notes from the conference and Rich will capture the events on video so that we'll be able to "pretend attend" once we return home.
I am going to miss you both at this year's Boglehead Conference. Your behind-the-scene contributions to the Bogleheads is beyond measure.
Enjoy your long-planned vacation.
Best wishes
Taylor
Taylor,
Thanks. We can't believe it ourselves that we won't be there, but we've been eyeing these Tuscany and Chianti wine festivals for years and the grapes are ready only in September and October. But everyone will be buzzing that you're attending this year! We hate it that we'll miss seeing you, but we'll see you in Miami every chance we get.

We're really going to miss you and Patti at the Conference this year, Ed. You two have been (and continue to be) a vital part of my Bogleheads event planning team. Enjoy your well-deserved getaway.

No, unfortunately. I hope to make it next year.
Here's hoping we're able to get Gus back again next year for you.
We'll treat Gus well to assure his regular presence. {smile}
Mel and the team,
Thank you very much for an outstanding job in organizing Bogleheads Symposia and introducing exciting speakers and topics.

I never met Gus Sauter but I remember at our second Bogleheads reunion when Mr. Bogle took us for a tour of Vanguard. We stopped by Mr. Sauter's tiny office where he managed all Vanguard's Index Funds and his nearby staff located in a room about half the size of a basketball court.
In my opinion, no one knows more about the nuts and bolts of index funds than Gus Sauter. I am anxious to meet him in October.
Best wishes.

Taylor,
So you are coming this year?! This is the second great news of the day. BH12 is turning up so exciting that we have to watch out for scalping of the remaining ten seats.

Yes, indeed, Victoria. Taylor, the "King of the Bogleheads" will be there this year after being unable to attend for a number of years due to health issues.
Jazzman wrote:I am planning on attending as well. I will supply a jazz band.
For real? That would be wonderful!
Victoria previously replied similarly but her post appears to have mysteriously disappeared.
I wrote "Seriously?" but deleted it, because I worried that Jazzman may misinterpret it and change his mind. "For real?" is a better question, and "That would be wonderful!" reflects my sentiment.

Mel, you told us that we'd be sorry if we planned our trip during Bogleheads meeting time, and now, unfortunately, I see that you were right.
Drat!
We'll definitely be first in line next year.
Ed and Patti
Yes, you and Patti are going to miss out on a double treat at our Conference this year (both Gus Sauter and Taylor will be there). Can't guarantee that either or both of them will be there next year, but you can hope.
Having said that, we're going to really miss you and Patti because you guys are valuable members of the team.
Can you please comment on what some have called "bait and switch" on the asset allocations for your Target Retirement funds. The AAs seem to be continuously more aggressive, for competitive reasons, while the promised glide paths for investors are not being honored.
Mel Lindauer wrote:After lunch, there will be book signings and personal discussions with Jack and our authors and experts.
I want to point out that anyone who has a book to sign should bring it with them. From last year's convention, there were a few disappointed members who forgot.
There aren't any for sale at the convention (at least there weren't in past years), and finding books nearby will be a challenge.

I sure wish I knew about this earlier this year...Philly is "only" about 3 hours from my home. I am still reading Jack's book "The Clash of the Cultures". If only there were more like him, and Warren B, and Ben G., and a very "few" others. If there is one next year, and I hope and pray there will be, I will do my best to be one of the lucky few to get a ticket. It sure would be nice to see a video of it. This guy is a living legend for the individual investor.

Yes, there will be a 2104 Bogleheads Conference. Be on the lookout for my announcement here on the forum on or around March 1st, 2014. To be "one of the lucky few to get a ticket", you need to respond promptly, because we continue to sell out early each year and have to shut down the registration once we each our self-imposed limit. We intentionally restrict attendance numbers in order to allow for more personal interaction with Jack and all the authors and experts.

The conference was excellent, as usual. Actually, it's highly un-usual that an event can maintain such a high stable value year after year. If BH conferences were a financial asset, they would be above the efficient frontier.
Thank you, Mel, for making it happen!

And, like active fund managers, it gets harder and harder each year, Victoria. After each event, I say to myself and to my team that it will be hard to top the just-concluded event. However, we'll continue to set the bar high and hope we can continue to "outperform" our previous events.
Lauren, please give them a few weeks to get it all posted on the Wiki. I didn't help record BH12, but I know they are scurrying around, editing, transcribing and obtaining as many of the articles and PowerPoints as can be available, for all of us. Plus I bet the photographers and notetakers have day jobs, as well. It's a great volunteer contribution. We'll likely see an announcement when they are posted to the Wiki.
