25 years today (how long u been on the job ???)
well, just finishing up 25 years here in the salt mine, started this job on july 1, 1988...
beware, youngsters, time flies when you're having fun.
btw same wife, 27 years,
same car, 11 years.
i guess when i like something i stick to it.
there are advantages to longevity on this job;
now qualify for same medical benefits even if i leave, and,
recently joined 2-comma club in retirement acct.
advice: invest early and often... it is amazing how the dough piles up over time
anyone been on the same job this long ??? just curious.

Hmmm...I see some parallels.
Left the job with 27 years in.
Same wife for 26 years.
Same vehicle for (going on) 12 years.
Member of the same club last time I checked.

Not that long. But in the same place now for 8 years. Which is the longest for me in this particular field. I plan on here staying here long term. Great people, great place to work. Congrats on the 2 commas!

Same job 19 years. I'm not going to make it 25 years, but each time I threaten to quit, they cut my hours and give me a pay raise.greenspam wrote:well, just finishing up 25 years here in the salt mine, started this job on july 1, 1988...

Re: 25 years today (how long u been on the job ???)
Same job since 1991. Made it through two bankruptcies/company changes and in 1997 took my clients with me to the current employer. Four employers, but the same job. I still have clients with me since when I started - they're starting to die off or retire in some cases.
Re: 25 years today (how long u been on the job ???)
I've been debating this. Will be 10 years in Aug. and I am 33. Most people I talk to agree that if I stay any longer it would be career suicide unless I plan on staying. For the most part, this is a great job. I telecommute 100%, decent pay and benefits. Lots of politics and layoffs but I presume that is similar in most companies in my field (IT).
This is not legal or certified financial advice but you know that already.

11 yrs at the same job. The only one I have had after my professional training. My coworker who was in charge of interviewing me knew I was "the one" when I asked her to hold on the phone while I flipped my steak. Great job, great pay, great bosses, & co workers.

Re: 25 years today (how long u been on the job ???)
28 1/2 years same company and same site. Got acquired 2 years ago and will be moving to new location starting Monday. It was very bitter sweet leaving the site I worked at for so long. The good thing is the commute will be shorter mileage wise, but waiting to see time wise.
Re: 25 years today (how long u been on the job ???)
Currently I sit a 1 year and 3 months. Longest time at 1 job was 1 year 8 months. That was right out of undergrad and in public accounting. Went back to grad school and got a job after that. Left that job because I got an offer that was in the same city as my now fiancee. I plan on staying with the company but may look around within in the next few years. At 25 years of service I think my company offers a 9% 401k match.
Re: 25 years today (how long u been on the job ???)
36 years. I know people say don't stay in one place that long, but out of a company of 800 people there are 25 people who have been there longer. It's that kind of industry where the specialized knowledge isn't taught in schools and is hard to replace and the younger people who could be set for life if they stuck around tend to go other places after a few years.

greenspam...
I started working at my current employer June 1988 (very close to your start date).
Married my one and only wife May 1990.
Bought my first and probably only new vehicle in Oct 1994 (ordered a new 1995 model) and still driving it.
I like to stick with things that are good anyway.
PS... at my employer we earn 8 hours sick leave monthly, and that accumulates with no limits, and when you retire you get paid that sick leave at your pay rate upon retirement.
I currently have a sick leave balance of 2043 hours.
I work from a home office, so even if quite sick (cold, virus, upset stomach, etc) I can usually still work.
Hope my health holds out until retirement and I collect on that nice leave balance payment.

I was "severed" along with the other 50 year olds after 29 years at a large multinational. For the last 11, I've been doing the same job, but independently so I've been doing what I'm doing for 40 years. I've another four of five to go before I retire.

Re: 25 years today (how long u been on the job ???)
I've been working on and off at my current client for about 6 or 7 years I think. With other clients and one regular job in between. Just had a call today from my agency with another possibility. The message said they thought I would be wrapping it up at the current client in a couple of weeks, which was news to me but is possible. They only use me as long as the work holds out, but have always called me back eventually.
Longest I've ever held a regular job is just under five years. Have done that several times.
I'm grateful that 401k's were introduced shortly after I started working. Allows for portability of retirement savings. Plus I feel like I'm less likely to hose it up than an employer would be with a defined benefit plan. Another advantage of changing jobs regularly is that I've been able to move all 401k funds to Vanguard, except for what's in my current plan. So the majority of my retirement savings are at Vanguard.
Hope to semi-retire in about seven more years and then fully retire about four or five years after that. This will depend on Mr Market, among other things.

Same employer for 28 years, same wife for 25 years (as of a few weeks ago). Until a couple of months ago it was the same car for 13 years, but then it got totaled.
But my wife can beat me: same employer for 36 years, same car for 23 years. She's now looking to replace the car, but hopefully not the husband.

Same wife for 45 years . Raised four children.
Three jobs since completing school:
1. 10 years;
2. 5 years; and
3. 25 years.
I almost always enjoyed the work I was doing.
Owned three homes:
1. 9 years;
2. 25 years; and
3. 7 years.
We have never bought a new car, only used.
Now retired about 2 years.

Re: 25 years today (how long u been on the job ???)
28 years in the only post-college job I have had. In the 8 years prior to that I had at least 8 jobs, so that gives average job tenure of 4 years. I'd always heard that the average person changes jobs every 4 or 5 years, so I guess I'm pretty average on the job hopping .
Only one spouse and will be 30 years of marrige in a few months.
Cars are only 8 and 6 years old.
16 years in house we had built.

32 years, counting full time after college. 35 years if you count co-op (internships). Yes the same place and no I am not related to anyone.
29 years of wedded bliss.
29 years in "same" house. We totally reconstructed/expanded after child number two, 24 years ago.
Vehicles
2001 Ford F350 (company vehicle, does that count?)
2003 Saab 93 (wife)
1991 BMW 325I (the thing won't die, is fun to drive and we get inquiries to sell several times a year)

Fascinating to read the job tenure of many Bogleheads. Many who have posted are well beyond the national averages and could even be considered outliers:

Re: 25 years today (how long u been on the job ???)
I was starting my freshman year of high school 25 years ago!
I've been at my current job for 7 years... I spent an extra 10 years training after med school, takes a while to get out.
Same wife for almost 15 years... my current vehicle is 7 years old, but I do have my trusty Ford Ranger that I bought 14 years ago!
I don't get sick leave, but have missed exactly 2 days (vertigo to bad to stand x2 spent the day in the bed both times... several years apart) of work since starting my residency in 2000.

That Bureau of Labor Statistics on median years of employment tenure would mean more if it did not include those as young as 16. It would have been more meaningful if the survey was for those older than, say, 35 years.Simplegift wrote:Fascinating to read the job tenure of many Bogleheads.
