Following LadyGeek's suggestions.

Test of editing quoted reply, formatting tools, and BBCode options. Seems to be working in this post.

Double-checked forum setting:
User Control Panel-->Board Preferences-->Edit Posting Defaults:
Enable BBCode by default -- Yes
Enable Smilies by default -- Yes
Looks good.

However quoted reply, formatting tools, and BBCode options are not available when I attempt to edit this post: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=120&p=1226898#p1226826

Deleted cookies and browser cache.
Test edit of non-working post above.
Still not working.

Will log out today and try again tomorrow after I reboot computer and login to forum.

That URL is not in a format recognized by phpBB (the forum software).

Why doesn't it work? Everything after the question mark is an input into a program on their server which interprets the equation and renders the image shown. The problem is that many of those characters have special meaning to the underlying interpreter, e.g. PHP. The forum software (phpBB) rejects the format because of those characters.

However, if you have PHP installed (most likely if you develop web-based applications...) you can reformat the URL to turn those special characters into ASCII representation and avoid the problem.

It does work using the URL above. However, CodeCogs Terms of Use (12. Access to the Service) prevent linking to anything from their site, so I removed the working image.

(Update: Clarified explanation of reformatting the URL. You can copy the working code into the Edit Post box and hit "Preview" to see the image. Just don't hit "Submit".)

According to CodeCogs Terms of Use (12. Access to the Service) and (14. Proprietary Rights), express written permission is needed to use anything from the site. Sorry, but only material that's allowed under fair use is permitted in this forum (see Policies and Etiquette (Quoting outside material)). If you think I'm misinterpreting CodeCogs' Terms of Use, please let me know.

LaTex is not supported by phpBB. There are a few experimental modifications available, but nothing which is guaranteed to work all the time (no released mods). We only use software that's well supported and guaranteed to work. This means LaTex can't be displayed in this forum.

Alternatively, you can use a word processor to create the equations (also try Google Docs: Google Docs Has an Equation Editor). Then, perhaps you can then upload the resulting image to a filesharing site. I don't have any better answers than that.

Yes, I was looking at that and also checking the automatic parsing of URLs -- They are not parsed inside quotes while they are parsed in other places. The BBCode parser seems to have a lot of odd properties.

Thanks - I did have the full url inside the img tags, but couldn't get the url to nest with the img inside. There was a separate problem that my browser security needed to whitelist bbcode.org for requests, so I think it was actually showing the pictures to everyone else but just not to me. Anyway, I figured it out.

What step is that? I have over 12,000 posts, and not one has ever been approved. Quite a few have been disapproved, and some have even been deleted completely, sometime alone or sometimes as part of whole threads, but I don't ever remember an "approval step." Do you have a reference in forum policy or FAQ? Perhaps first time posters are reviewed to avoid spam, but I am under the impression that that comes later. Your member status must be approved, but if you weren't a member, you wouldn't have been able to compose your post in the first place.

If you aren't getting posts deleted, you are not being aggressive enough in yer posts. You are losing out to inflation.

After a few trys I got it. I had to resize the image and use a whole number to denote the percentage, not a decimal equivalent.

For the wiki, use the actual URL - which is your 2nd img entry. The first one points to the web page - which is why it's not displayed.
