I would really like for my wife to attend however we have a 7mo. old. Would this be a problem?

Folks,
I may have to stay over night in Austin. Could someone provide me with the name of a reasonably priced hotel or motel in the area of the meeting.
Thanks in Advance

I'm afraid I must confess my ignorance here. I love bogleheads and have learned so much from this site, but what happens at chapter meetings? Can anyone attend? I would like to go if I can, but was just wondering what to expect. Thanks!

I hear you need to bring your own paint ball gun.Austex1 wrote:I'm afraid I must confess my ignorance here. I love bogleheads and have learned so much from this site, but what happens at chapter meetings? Can anyone attend? I would like to go if I can, but was just wondering what to expect. Thanks!
Just kidding! I've never been to one either. I guess we'll find out when we get there. From your ID (Austex1) looks like you don't have far to go!
Google tells me I have a 51 min drive.

It's mostly us folks sitting around a bit shy about talking about ourselves, our money, our goals, our methods, etc. No agenda usually.

Crumbs...!
It seems like every time I have something like this to go to, my wife schedules something
too. It must be bad karma or something...
Anyway, in case I don't get to attend, here's my intro to get the ball rolling.
1) age 67 and retired with a pension
2) my wife retired in January - also FRA but no pension
3) Applied for SS for my wife in Feb on her earnings alone. (Her's is very close to 1/2 of my FRA amount.)
4) I applied for spousal benefits on her earnings and left mine to grow.
5) This is working. We have more income from the 2 SS's than we did when she was working. She was saving
most of her's in 401K and IRA's.
6) I will wait until age 70 to apply for my SS benefits. Of course, RMD's kick in then too. This means too
much cash in the short term but more over the long term (always a good thing).
Hint !
If you want to apply for spousal benefits, go and apply in person. I tried online and wound up with 2
visits to the SS office (so far). Luckily, there is a new and under-attended SS office at
5508 hwy 290 W. It's around the back and almost nobody is there.

Yes, thanks Brian for organizing this once again! I think that we all learned a lot from each other. Will you be sending out invites to the new Google group soon?bertilak wrote:Seconded.ol_pops wrote:Thanks Bryan for arranging this ! It was great.

Hello Austin Chapter Members,
I am new to the Bogleheads forum. I am living in Austin, TX, and found this post by accident. Unfortunately, I found this after the May 19 meeting.
Would you please include me when you send out the invite/announcement for the next meeting?
How often do you meet?
Thank you,
Hella

Howdy, Hella. Welcome to Austin. Check back on this board (Local Chapters and Bogleheads Community) for any updates and goings on with the Austin chapter. If you prefer, you may want to send a private message (PM) to Bryan (user name bryanv) and ask him to put you on his distribution list. To send a PM, just go to one of his messages and click on the PM button on the right side.
