THANK YOU!!! Bogleheads Conference #13 (2014)
Please let me be the first to thank everyone who made this year's BH conference such a pleasant experience. Met so many nice folks and am again humbled into realizing how little I know and how much others do know about so many different things.
Thank you!
Thank you!

I wish I could be at the bar tonight, like I was on Wednesday and Thursday nights!
It was a fabulous meeting. There is no one like Jack Bogle and no group like the Bogleheads (and no financial company like Vanguard). A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this possible.

I retitled the thread...
I'm back home and want to say I had a blast. It was great meeting everyone.
I've contacted the appropriate people and expect to get copies of the slide packages for posting in the wiki. Give everyone a few days to get organized.

Can you remind those of us who were unable to attend on what the process will be to share at least summaries of what went on? Is it the slide packages you mention above? I have in mind, for example, the list of questions that Mel was going to ask Jack Bogle. Thanks.
Re: Thank You!!! Bogleheads Conference #13 (2014)
Sure. First, a summary of administrative details:
- Do not mention the location (other than it was in Philadelphia), restaurant names, or the dates for next year.
- Please give the photographers, Pongo and family_doc, a week or two to get their editing done. Pongo will upload his photos and post a link when he's ready. I assume family_doc will do the same.
- Also allow Rich Guerra, VELO724X, some time to edit the videos which will be uploaded and made available online.
- VictoriaF has transcribed the proceedings (by hand). Allow some time for her to edit and make the information available.
- I'll post links to the slides when the files are received.
All posted links and conference information will be posted in the wiki here: Bogleheads® convention meetings. I currently have a placeholder for Bogleheads 13. I'll upload and provide links as material is received (or links posted).
Members may certainly post what happened at the conference, discuss here if desired. Or, start a new thread if anyone wants to deep-dive into specific topics. General conference info can be posted in the Local Chapters and Bogleheads Community forum (here). Specific details, e.g. Q&A questions can be posted where appropriate.

Pongo has expedited processing of Jack Bogle's photo for the wiki home page, which is now live: Bogleheads wiki

Re: THANK YOU!!! Bogleheads Conference #13 (2014)
There were a lot of questions about advice related to the bond portion of a portfolio. The questions were largely driven by current low bond returns and/or fear of interest rate risk in that increasing rates will drive down the value of a bond fund (although the extent of this effect was debated with respect to bond funds). Most or all of the panelists recommended against using the Vanguard International Bond fund as an alternative. Allan Roth said bank or credit union CDs having a small early redemption penalties may be good alternatives.
As many Bogleheads know, Jack Bogle thinks the Vanguard Total Bond Index fund is too overweighted in US government bonds (70%?), and that perhaps an index should be developed that more accurately reflects the US economy. As a teaser until the "official" videos are posted, this is what Jack Bogle said yesterday when asked what to do about the bond portion of a portfolio. The official videos will include commentary from other panelists as well.

I enjoyed meeting the many first-time attendees as well as all of the returning veterans. It was a memorable event, and Jack was in great form, as always. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the trip to Vanguard, too. Hope to see many of you at next year's event which is already in the planning stages.

BTW, there was a very long discussion with Jack Bogle to "clarify" his intentions on the inclusion of Social Security and pensions as a "bond" - Is it part of your bond's portfolio allocation or not? Stay tuned...

My question/comment was in error, so I deleted it. Billy had more than one entry in the conversation and I missed that.

Yes, it was another excellent conference put on by the committee. MEL, Paul, Ed, Gail, Taylor etc. have made a difference in the investing world. No other mutual fund can claim anything quite like the Bogleheads. I sincerely thank them.

I am a retiree and was a 1st time attendee at the conference. I have followed most of the Boglehead philosophy for much of my life but have only used the site for the last few years and am not very active. For this reason, I debated whether or not I should attend. I am very glad I did. The presentations and panel discussions were very interesting. The other participants were friendly and the Vanguard staff quite hospitable. The Conference Committee did a great job and the conference was very well organized, as you would probably expect. I think that anyone with an interest in personal finance/investment issues and the Boglehead approach would probably enjoy future conferences.

Beauty not just in looks (I rather like that they are a but muted in that department), but overall. I've been fortunate to be a passenger in one and absolutely loved it. However, I am waiting for the 3rd Generation smaller version as the two of us do not warrant spending that much on a car seating 7.VictoriaF wrote:

Holding true to the Boglehead ways, I may get there someday!
On topic, I very much enjoyed hearing from some Bogleheads who have "won the game" and their sharing of living life. In the early contribution phase, it's easy to forget the possible experiences there are out there! I sense some lifestyle creep coming, but it will be worth it!

I had a wonderful time at this years conference. This is genuinely a nice group of people that want to help others. That blue Tesla....? I got to ride in it! It was AwEsOmE and I do NOT get excited about vehicles but I did about this one. I won't tell whose it is tho!

Re: THANK YOU!!! Bogleheads Conference #13 (2014)
My wife and I were first-time attendees. People were warm, friendly and happy to engage in conversation. Just about everyone made us feel welcome.
I got a lot out of the panel discussions and presentations. My take-aways were "Don't micro-manage, don't sweat the small stuff, don't feel that you have to rebalance assets every third weekend." Rick Ferri (also others) pointed out that one of the important things is to have a strategy, and own the discipline to stick with it. These are things that most Bogleheads know, but it's good to have them reiterated by experts.
What was also reassuring (in a weird way) was to see experts disagreeing about asset allocations and investment strategies. Made me realize (again?) that there isn't a single "right" way, but many approaches that will get you to your goals.
Plan to be back next year.

Hi Everyone - Just got back from my first BogleHeads conference! Really had a great time, loved meeting so many people and even a few great folks from Wisconsin. Will attend again for sure. What an honor to meet Mr. Bogle and thank him for all he has done! So now instead of just reading I will start with this post and hope to post a bit here and there. Great speakers , Great Food , fun to meet everyone who takes vacation or is already retired (nice!) to head to this conference. Looking forward to next year... Thanks to Mel and crew for all their work to put this on each year. I had my coffee this morning in my new Vanguard mug so I am all set!

Next up is Jack Bogle's presentation: Bogleheads® Conferences (Bogleheads® 13 - Philadelphia) - Slides are in PDF format.
Direct link: “Human Beings and Algorithms" as Vanguard’s 41st Year Begins
=========================
I should have mentioned yesterday that it's better to view the slides simultaneously with the video (when it becomes available). Gus Sauter's presentation makes a very subtle, yet important point - the introduction of an index fund vs. an index mutual fund. It's not the same thing, the distinction is sometimes lost. That's why Gus is highlighting Samsonite Luggage - "The first index portfolio."
BTW, America's first mutual fund is Massachusetts Investors Trust (MITTX), established March 21, 1924.
Update: Revised presentation link, wiki link.

The owners would like to announce, with apologies to Taylor Larimore, not to mention logic and grammar:
The First Annual Reunion of the Teslas that Jack Built
We are looking forward to some new 85D's appearing at Bogleheads 2015. This is a purchase which shares in the idealism and social responsibility of the Bogle philosophy. New owners recognize that they are paying a premium price, which in turn, allows for the development of a mass market electric car and the eventual electrification of all transportation. And along the way, we are having more fun than people our age have a right to expect.
And thanks to Mel, Gail, Lady Geek, etc, etc, etc, for a great meeting!
