31. I'd be interested to see the results when more people respond. I figured I was young compared to the rest of the forum members.

32 years and 2 weeks.

Like Jasc15, I thought I was young compared to the rest of the forum. Interesting to see a peak of late-20's to early-30 year olds.
Maybe this is the age people start making "real" money and feel the need understand finance.

I just now turned 65. Amazing. I "retired" 9 years ago and began devoting more time to serving others. My investments are Bogle-inspired and the only serious thought they get from me is gratitude for financial security. Live not to provoke envy. When the cup is full, carry it even.

With 122 respondents in, the results so far show that you don't need the wisdom of age to be a boglehead.

It's very encouraging to see so many under 35's on here. They outnumber the over 60 crowd.

I'm surprised to see the age distribution here. But maybe the retired folks are too busy enjoying their Boglehead retirement to participate in this poll.

funny distribution - I was expecting a bell curve (tilted to the younger end due to mortality and start of earnings). Perhaps we need more data or perhaps different age groups are more prone to do polls?

Pretty darn close to the US population... the high points look about 5 years off, but probably close enough with such a small sample.

Based on the 2014 Boglehead Net Worth Survey, the results should look a little something like this:

Code: Select all

<21 0.1%
21-25	2.7%
26-30	11.3%
31-35	12.1%
36-40	11.1%
41-45	10.4%
46-50	8.6%
51-55	11.6%
56-60	11.5%
61-65	9.6%
66-70	6.4%
71-75	2.8%
76-80	1.1%
81-85	0.5%
86+ 0.0%

I received a PM to reconsider the thread lock. Upon further review, this thread is about Bogleheads' community building.

This thread is now unlocked and moved to the Local Chapters and Bogleheads Community (Bogleheads).

I'm old enough to make IRA catch-up contributions.

50 and so far the only good thing I noticed is that I'm able to make catch-up provisions in my 401K. That and the fact that I'm above ground. My wife who is 54 and looks ten years younger than me has a much better outlook.

My current age is much sweeter than 16!

1) I am old enough to take penalty-free withdrawals from my traditional retirement plans without needing to use any special exceptions for that purpose. (But no interest in actually doing so. Instead, I am gradually converting traditional to Roth, which can be done at any age. And planning to work, at least part-time, indefinitely which means I may never hit the RMD point, since all my traditional funds have been rolled into my employer plan.

2) I am old enough to collect widow's Social Security benefits as my late husband's survivor. (but also not interested in doing so at this time--planning to wait until FRA in order to maximize them.)

3) Young enough to still make contributions to HSA and old enough to make catch-up contributions to that HSA (as well as catchups to my 403b and Roth IRA) (and doing all of these).

4) Old enough for 10% senior discount on TCBY Fro-Yo (but no interest in using that discount, since I can flash my grad student student ID at the cashier and get the same 10% discount as a student!)

I am very surprised that at 35 years old only 75% of the respondents are older than me. I would have thought it was more like 90%.

So based on this admittedly unscientific poll, this forum is about half Millennials/Gen X, 40% Boomers, and 10% Silent Generation, but it depends on if you consider people born from 1959-63 (age 51-55 now) to be Boomers. Ignoring "official definitions" of generations, is the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers (born in '62) a Boomer? Is the lead singer of REM (born '60) a Boomer? Is Obama (born in '61) a Boomer? I consider them Gen X; if you were in high school when Star Wars came out in '77 and in college when MTV went on the air in '81, you're a Gen X'er. I also think a lot of people, maybe most people, in that age bracket don't consider themselves boomers. So if you consider age 51-55 now to be Gen X, the forum is about 57% Millennial/Gen X, 33% Boomers, 10% Silent Generation.
