Happy Birthday, indeed. (May 8, 1929). Thanks for all you've done.

Hope I'm even half that lucid when I turn 84.

Many returns! (No pun intended. Ok, maybe a little.)

Wishing you the best from someone you have never met (unlike several above posters). Just because you have not met me does not mean you have not done a great deal to improve the life of my family. Thank you.

Today, I couldn't get the following out of my head, so I wrote it down to Honor Mr. Bogle for his birthday.

Imagine John Bogle on a stage adorned with an Admiral Bicorne. He dusts off the musical score to Pirates of Penzance and turns to the Major-General's Song. He clears his throat and cues the music. He begins to sing...

I raised the sails despite the wails and scoffing of the industry
And "Bogle's Folly" steered its way to 401k history
It's nothing but a marvel when I contemplate the irony
I think the name mistaken, as that "folly" was my victory!

Efficient markets ne'er restrain my colleagues who do speculate
With Wall Street hedge funds unconstrained, their managers I castigate
I prod and poke and light a fire 'neath errant Vanguard officers
Defending small investors from the money-grubbing profiteers!

I cast my pearls before a world that knows not what to make of it
The croupiers won't embrace my wisdom nor its proven benefit
A clash of cultures does not sway my course 'though I might be dismissed
My common sense on mutual funds is but a cost hypothesis!

Had I my way expenses would be brought down to a zero cost!
Perfection unobtained, my cause undaunted, hope is never lost!
Simplicity! Efficiency! With Modesty! And Majesty!

I am the very Mentor of Investors known as Bogleheads!

Happy Birthday to a passionate steward whom I admire from afar.

Bogleheads:

In my opinion, no man has done more for the individual investor than our mentor, Jack Bogle.

This is a tiny selection of what others have said:

Nobel Laureate, Paul Samuelson: "Bogle's reasoned precepts can enable a few million of us savers to become in twenty years the envy of our suburban neighbors."

Former Secretary of the Treasury, William Simon: "Superior in intellect, character, and performance, the investment genius who defied conventional wisdom and proved his critics wrong."

Warren Buffett: "Bogle does the American investor a real service by carrying on his crusade."

Jane Bryant Quinn: "I date my success as an investor from the day I met Jack Bogle and learned about index mutual funds."

Don Phillips, President of Morningstar Investment Research: "A longtime student of the fund industry, Bogle is both its harshest critic and its greatest friend. He is, in effect, the conscience of the industry."

Former Chairman, SEC: Arthur Levitt: "Jack Bogle is brilliant and persuasive, and his ability to get to the heart of complex issues is one of his greatest gifts."

Forbes magazine: "One of the four investment giants of the twentieth century."

Time magazine: "One of the world's 100 most powerful and influential people."

Happy Birthday, Jack -- and many more to come.

Best wishes.

A Very Happy Birthday, Mr Bogle!
Your accomplishments have been truly remarkable. All of the "Bogleheads" (and a lot of other folks who discover each year how they have benefited from your efforts) really appreciate what you have done for the "little guy"

Belated Happy Birthday, Jack. Enjoyed seeing you have such a prominent role in "The Retirement Gamble" on PBS. You were the star of the show and rightly so. It would not surprise me to learn that Vanguard had a significant number of new investors shortly after the show aired. Your consistent message of balanced, low-fee investing continues to benefit an ever increasing number of us who have the good sense to follow your wise advice. Stay the course. (Where have I heard that before?)
Best wishes, | Michael | | Invest your time actively and your money passively.
