Which Boglehead inactive member do you miss the most?
It's easy to forget that many excellent contributors to Bogleheads are no longer active members, having ceased to post for whatever reason. Who do you remember and miss that is no longer with us?
No excuses, no regrets.

He is active on the Morningstar Diehard Forum. Their motto still is 'Bogleheads Unite...' The forum seems to stick to discussing Vanguard index funds and other investing related stuff. Topics unrelated to finance or investing are not covered in this forum...but then Morningstar has specific forums for other subjects.
Here is one of several threads that Adrian started on that forum.

This is something I have thought about recently as I have been brushing up on wills and trusts. With the explosion of social media and social media "friendships" who notifies the friends when people pass on? Does the executer in a will do that?? This is a topic for a whole thread, even forum, by itself. While perhaps an issue going forward in society, it's probably a better societal question why it would be an issue and whether it is healthy. What we're seeing is the reality TV nature of the internet. People participate in other people's lives (or more precisely other people's online presentations) at their caprice and leisure, without danger, living vicariously through others when convenient, dropping out when not -- yet always demanding entertainment, and in this case, demanding the ultimate conclusion. (I actually recall one facebook posting where a guy was dealing with his wife's illness and there were ALL CAPS POSTINGS from facebook "friends" DEMANDING HE KEEP THEM INFORMED -- what people convince themselves constitutes caring is something entirely different, more like being included in the narrative, but only when they want that storyline to be playing for them.)staythecourse wrote:This is something I have thought about recently as I have been brushing up on wills and trusts. That's a good segue into a poster this forum should miss: opponent process. With brutally honest insight into human nature, he would just tell it how it is -- without regard for the psychological illusions people erect to help them cope with life (illusions that people seem to genuinely and deeply believe). I loved it.
Although a list such as this is nice (especially since a sizable number of those names are probably lurking and quietly pleased at seeing the mention) it would be more productive to look at what is causing them to no longer participate. No doubt there are many reasons, but one is obvious. There are very talented people who are attracted to this site. They don't have to contribute. If they contribute and people don't reflect on what they have to say -- and start an argument anyway -- there's very little the valuable contributor gets out of it. So he or she goes off and finds something more worthwhile to do. They haven't lost a thing, but the forum has needlessly lost intellectual capital. Just something to think about.

This is a very astute observation. As addictive as reality TV shows are, the continual and stochastic nature of the discussion forum's threads makes them even more alluring.Harold wrote:This is a topic for a whole thread, even forum, by itself. Economist Robin Hanson has a theory that compassion with someone's suffering sends a strong signal of evolutionary origin. In the dawn of humanity, weak and sick members of human groups were becoming a hindrance, and taking care of them was one of the most powerful ways to demonstrate the allegiance. Today, this signaling is achieved by pushing Caps Lock, but the psychological System-1 gets fooled over and over.Harold wrote:People participate in other people's lives (or more precisely other people's online presentations) at their caprice and leisure, without danger, living vicariously through others when convenient, dropping out when not -- yet always demanding entertainment, and in this case, demanding the ultimate conclusion. I agree about Opponent Process, I have been thinking about him occasionally. He is not of the age to disappear for morbid reasons; I hope he found something better to do.Harold wrote:That's a good segue into a poster this forum should miss: opponent process. The nature of the Forum is such that the more one participates the more one is "forced" to participate. As soon as one posts in several threads, it becomes compulsory to follow these threads, to respond to the responders, and so on. After breaking away for a while, and wrapping up all the threads one is active in, abstinence becomes easier.Harold wrote:Although a list such as this is nice (especially since a sizable number of those names are probably lurking and quietly pleased at seeing the mention) it would be more productive to look at what is causing them to no longer participate. Having said that, if the markets drop a few more percent next week, we will start seeing many of the old friends.

Posters do disappear and you wonder "what happened". This goes all the way back to the old Morningstar forum before Bogleheads.org existed. There are so many really. As I think back to the old M* days, one poster who was just an absolute class act and gentleman was Bob Stowe. I never met the man in person but when he passed away (I believe he was in his early 50's - way too young), it really saddened me.
There are some wonderful people out there.
