Select the link, then click on the "Img" button in the editing toolbar. Or, just copy this into your post:

Code: Select all

Will appear as:

1. Including a link is easy. No more entering html code. Just paste the link url. That's it! For example, here's a link to Vanguard home page:

2. Formatting text is easy. Just highlight a block of text, hit the 'B' button for bold, 'i' for italics, 'u' for underline. Fforbesor example:

note - I did not put the brackets at the beginning or the end because I wanted to illustrate the middle, but there needs to be a [ before the url and a ] at the very end for the whole thing to work.

Let's do it this way:

Code: Select all

This is Money
will show as: This is Money

This is a more complicated format than what can be done with the built-in forum URL button.

I'm using a browser extension called Make Link for Firefox, or Create Link on Chrome.

Quoting the post you are responding to is also easy. Just hit the quote button before you reply.

Edit: corrected typo

Editing a post is also easy. If you made typo or want to make clarification, no problem! Just hit the Edit button. Common usage requires that you put a note at the end saying what you edited, but it's totally up to you!

This is a test reply, and a question or two.
How do we contact an Administrator? I cannot find the "contact us" link mentioned in the last FAQ.
Also, I saw a few topics that were questions for a panel. Are any Answres but the panels posted anywhere to be able to read them?
Thank you.

Not sure if this is the official best practices way, but you could always "report" your own post. Just click the exclamation point in the upper right corner of your post and follow on from there.

Reporting a post does work, but that feature is better intended to flag issues that need immediate attention. The best way to contact an administrator is by PM'ing one of the global moderators listed in The team link at the bottom of every forum page.

If you don't get a response, then report the post and someone will take care of it.

In addition to moderating (edit posts, etc.), moderators can do some administrative functions such as changing a username. A site admin (like me) does everything a moderator can do, as well as administrate the overall forum.

The panel questions are for the upcoming Bogleheads® Conference. <-- See this wiki page for links to the conference material.

Sorry, tabs and spaces won't do indentation. That's how the forum software works. Why, I have no idea.

If you want to create an indented list, use the List button in the editing toolbar like this:

Code: Select all

Item 1

item 2

item 3
Results in:
 • Item 1
 • item 2
 • item 3

You can also use the code tag for indentation with spaces and tabs.

Code: Select all

 two spaces
	tab
Doesn't look too pretty in-line though.

^^^ This is a "feature" of the phpBB forum software, which truncates (chops off) the front part of the URL. Why? I have no idea.

The link for your post is:

Code: Select all

https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3223640#p3223640
But displayed as: viewtopic.php?p=3223640#p3223640

The software only does this for forum links. Other links are not affected, like this one: https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Main_Page

LadyGeek wrote:Why? I have no idea... The software only does this for forum links. Other links are not affected, like this one: https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Main_Page
I'll venture a WAG: phpBB forum links all start with the same prefix, i.e. https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php... in the case of this forum. That provides little info about what follows. So if someone posts a series of them they'd all look the same. By showing only the trailing part of the URL it's much easier to distinguish these types of links from one another, i.e. by looking at the topic and post numbers at the end.

Is there a prize for correct answers?

P.S. Observant lurkers may have noticed that I managed to dupe the forum software into showing the prefix part of a forum link. I did that by italicizing the "://" in the URL. Without that hack it would have appeared as viewtopic.php...
