I'm pretty sure you don't have to run your HSA through your employer. You won't be able to make your contributions pre-tax but you can take the deduction at tax time so it should end up being a wash tax-wise.

As Novine said, if the plan you purchased is HSA-eligible you can open an HSA on your own (if you don't already have one) and make direct contributions either in installments, or as a lump sum.

However, if one's HSA contributions do not come out of one's paycheck, then you will be paying FICA/medicare taxes before you contribute just like someone who was unemployed and used this health plan. It's not the end of the world though.

And congrats on going part-time! That should give you lots more time to do the things you like to do.
