deposit check via scan

Postby hicabob » Sun Jul 14, 2013 1:19 pm

I have been unsuccessfully trying to do the "deposit check via scan" operation offered by Capital360 with no luck. I am using a good hi-end scanner - tried both grayscale + black/white, drew dots on the corners but they cap360 says they can't read it. Wondering if other bogleheads have tried this with more luck?

Not with your particular bank.

However, with my local credit union, their iPhone e-deposit app has worked 2/2 times. Kind of weird, but it works!

After you scan the image, open the image in MS Paint and crop the picture so that there is only a centimeter of white-space (white or whatever color the background is) around the check.

I always had trouble until I did this. Now it goes through on the first time every time.

I ended up taking it to the ATM this time but I will try a dark background next time - thanks for the tip.

Does Capital360 have an app you can use to make deposits with a smartphone?
I've used BofA's version and it works flawlessly. It's especially useful for small checks like rebates and such where it's not worth making a special trip to the ATM to deposit.

I have used two different smart phone apps from two large bank to deposit check with no problem.
Enter amt, take front and back picture and it works all of time.

Agreed.

We've had seamless experience with BoA's app, used with an iPhone.

VERY handy, even though there's a branch just a few blocks away. No need to carry checks, large or small, around "intending to get to the bank", etc.
Quick click, and the money is there.

I've never tried to deposit via ING/CapOne360's website, but their phone app has always worked flawlessly for me.

I recently switched to Ally & their phone app has worked well the one time I've used it. It also has a $10,000 limit, which is higher than ING/CapOne360.

They sadly don't have an app for WP so I take a picture with my phone then upload it. It has worked for me dozens of times. I just did one Friday. If they don't get their act together I'm moving my checking to ally too.

When you scan a check to deposit on the website, you MUST leave a border of non-check space on the image so their server can identify the corners of the check. I usually do this by scanning it with a dark piece of paper behind the check, and when I crop it I leave a few pixels around all four sides. Works like a charm.

As others have mentioned, if you use the mobile app, you don't really need to worry about this. Works easy.

I tried deposit via scan today but with the suggested change ... a darker background surrounding the check that is, and it worked a treat, bing-bang-boom.
Thanks boridi and others!

Scanning a check! What a strange combination of old and new!

It's a bit like teleporting a stone tablet!

Alliant Credit Union has a very good check scan feature. We use it all the time.

I have never had an issue with over 100 checks between the BofA and the Chase iPhone apps.

I've never used the ING app even though I bank with them. I use the Chase iPhone app from time to time with absolutely no issues.

So easy...take a picture of the front, picture of the back, enter a few numbers, and submit!

When I called my cu and asked, how long do I need to have the original around and they said six months, I said forget that and mailed it in.
