Favorite guitarist...
Re: Favorite guitarist...
My all time favorite is Russ Freeman. Second runner up, Lee Ritenour. 3rd in line, Earl Klugh. I'm also a big Walter Becker fan.

That's easy: Ry Cooder, Leo Kotke, John Fahey!
And, of course, Deep Gap, NC's own: Doc Watson.

I am currently reading "One Way Out, The Inside Story of the Allman Brothers Band" by Alan Paul.
Duane Allman and Dickey Betts were pretty good.
The book states that Clapton was simply in awe of Duane and vise versa.

I admire them all but Hendrix was the best of the three.
Clapton was floored by Hendrix's playing. SRV has copied Hendrix in many ways.

Nobody comes close to Carlos Santana in my book. Caravanserai gives me chills every single time I listen to it. So, so glad my stepfather introduced me to him (his music) years ago.
From your list however, the easy choice is Eric Clapton.

From a Pete Townshend article on Jimi Hendrix in Rolling Stone:
"With Jimi, I didn't have any envy. I never had any sense that I could ever come close. I remember feeling quite sorry for Eric, who thought that he might actually be able to emulate Jimi. I also felt sorry that he should think that he needed to. Because I thought Eric was wonderful anyway. Perhaps I make assumptions here that I shouldn't, but it's true. Once — I think it was at a gig Jimi played at the Scotch of St. James [in London] — Eric and I found ourselves holding each other's hands. You know, what we were watching was so profoundly powerful."

For more said in fewer notes, I like Andy Latimer. he can play a lot of notes, but sometimes, squeezes a lot of feeling into very few note indeed.

Ok, I am still reading the Allman Brothers book and it is now year 2000...Dickey Betts is gone.
Derek Trucks and Warren Hayes are in. Just watched a 2003 Beacon Theater show on YouTube and those two just blew me away. Trucks is amazing. He wastes no movement either on the fretboard or on the stage. Dude is serious, very serious.

Re: Favorite guitarist...
This discussion needs a bit more variety.
For a great classical player, here’s Jason Vieaux playing some Jobim:

For electric guitar buffs, here’s Steffen Schackinger, who’s excellent but not so well known:

For a more eclectic style, try Andy McKee:

Jimmy Page.............incredibly versatile and talented.

I voted for Clapton because Roy Clark wasn't mentioned.

Carlos Montoya
Re: Favorite guitarist...
I never heard of him -until I finally looked him up and checked out his stuff. Definitely love the genre of music. However, this sounds too much like Stevie Ray Vaughan, whom I love(ed) as a guitarist but this is something that has been already done.Winthorpe wrote:I stumbled across this old yet interesting thread.
I love the legends, too - Hendrix, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan.
After reading through all the posts, I find it hard to believe that nobody (unless I missed it) has mentioned Joey Bonamassa.
Any Bonamassa fans out there? He's younger than the rest, but I find him amazing, and certainly among the best of the under 40 crowd out there.

Don't forget this one lady: Charo (yes, she of the "cutchi cutchie" fame); she studied with Segovia, and is a very fine classical guitarist.

Les Paul -- hands down. He was instrumental in making it possible for the group of guitarist in your poll.

I voted for Clapton. My favorite is Leo Kottke, not that I think he is necessarily the greatest but I enjoy his playing style.

Have played for 50 years, and there are so many.
I have different favorites for acoustic vs electric.
Won't go through my list of electric players but for acoustic, hands down Laurence Juber

Re: Favorite guitarist...
What this post reveals is not so much who is the best guitarist of all times, but rather the homogeneity of the Bogleheads sample group.
Were all of the best guitarists of all times rock or blues musicians who did their best work between the late sixties and the early 80s?
Admittedly, there are some outliers.......

On that list I voted for Eric Clapton.
There are a few missing though ...
Current favorite is Derek Trucks, who I think is just magical on the slide guitar.

So, it has nothing to do with the fact that great guitarists would be recognized as such by a wide sample of people.protagonist wrote:What this post reveals is not so much who is the best guitarist of all times, but rather the homogeneity of the Bogleheads sample group.

Just to satisfy you - I'll through out a less known - Matt Raines. Incredible guitarist. Does that somehow make it less homogenous?
