Barcode generator

Post by ciscovp »

I am looking for a barcode generator software that i can use to inventory about 300 different servers. I want something that can easily and quickly generate barcodes for all the devices. That is, I specify that i need 350 distinct barcode and the software quickly generates the barcodes. The ones i have seen can only create one barcode at a time. My preference will be to buy a software but will consider a tool that can perform the same function. My company will pay for this software/tool.

I used this software a few years ago for clients. Now, I simply find an online option for one off barcodes.

The software is almost definitely on your computer already. What Google searches did you try?

Microsoft Word, some Avery peel and stick labels and a barcode font could easily do that.
FYI: barcodes start and end with an *
i.e.: *barcode*

"3of9" Font is a common barcode font that you should easily find online.

You can also do this several different ways in Excel and you can do a Google search for that.

An easier solution if you just need a sequential number would be to just order them online and let someone else print them and mail them to you.

Here is a search for "preprinted barcode labels" on Amazon.

In addition to simply generating the images... if your barcode is for use in Retail Point of Sale then you would want to register and purchase a range from GS1, or a barcode re-seller. These are for UPC codes and the like. You will find lots of info about barcode types at http://www.barcode-1.net/

You need to figure out if you want to use "1D" or "2D" barcode formats.
The 1D barcodes are straight forward - you need to get some "barcode fonts" and install them on your computer.
Than in Word or Excel you can specify that font in the cell - and a barcode will show up.
Create a spreadsheet with all of your part numbers - change the font on that column to the barcode font you want.
Some common 1D barcode fonts are "Code39", "Code128". Search for these as font files.

2D barcodes are different - they are "pictures". These are the "QR codes" and "DataMatrix" square boxes you see.
They are an encoded format and can hold significantly more information than traditional 1D barcode formats.
That is why you can with your smartphone scan a QR code and be linked to a web site (an Http: address is encoded in the QR).
You can find some online QR or DataMatrix generator sites.
This one will allow you to generate up to 100 at one time - http://www.qrexplore.com/generate/ (I have used this in the past)
Other 2D sites I have used -
http://www.qrstuff.com/
https://strokescribe.com/en/qr-code-exc ... cript.html (I have purchased and used this software - it installs "add-ons" in Word and Excel, works great, as long as you can install add-ons in your corporate IT/PC space).

Here are some useful websites to learn about barcodes.
http://www.intermec.com/products/computers/index.aspx (Vendor of barcode scanners and hand held computers - use CK3X where I am - look around on the Intermec site and find their software packages, I have not used the software as our CK3X are tied into Oracle).

Hope this points you in the right direction.
