How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
See the title of the topic, pretty much.

One of my goals is to put Edward Jones out of business.
Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
1. Travel
- On the night of my last day in the office I flew to the UK, to Windsor and then London. Shortly after my return, I attended the Bogleheads conference (BH13) and then flew to Chicago.
- For 2015 I am planning trips to Spain (el Camino de Santiago), Louisville KY, Berlin, Seoul, Novy Sad (Serbia), and BH14.
- Next winter, I want to hitchhike to Antarctica.
2. Education
- Coursera and other MOOCs
- Teaching Company's courses
- Books and academic papers in my areas of interest
3. Events: lectures, seminars, conferences
- Numerous events in D.C.
- On-line, e,g., TED, YouTube, podcasts on my topics of interest
- Travel to some events
4. Creating
- I had an idea of creating a new "thing" which I had to put on hold for the reasons beyond my control. I will return to this idea when (if) the circumstances change.
- I want to try my hand in writing books, nonfiction and fiction.
5. Hiking
- I am walking with a backpack in preparation to el Camino walk.
- After el Camino, I will continue hiking locally and internationally.

How is the Antarctica hitchiking working out?
Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
I'm so far from retirement, I have no idea what condition I will be in.
If i retired tomorrow. I would do next to nothing until may, and then explore the states by motorcycle until I can't go anymore, or I've seen everything. Sounds magical, now I just need to fund the time and money piece.

Mostly I tour around on my bicycle.
Generally, I am either planning a bike tour, riding my bike on tour, or writing up the journal of a recent tour. You can read all my journals here.
Currently, I am planning a tour of northern Italy. I leave April 7.

H is doing a lot of deferred maintenance and trying to figure out what car he wants to buy once he cleans out the carport. He is enjoying researching the different cars and the pros/cons of each. We are also doing some traveling with his classmates and friends. We have been to Niagra Falls, DC, San Diego, SF, LA, and soon Korea and back to Chicago. and Denver, plus New Mexico and Yellowstone We are going to several conferences as well.
We are also enjoying a lot of take out and restaurant meals. Life is good! I'm still running my nonprofit, as long as it remains fun and is helping folks. We seem to both be pretty content.

Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
Trying my best to live a retired life while working. I.e. working to live - a lot ( is there a book on this?)
When I actually retire:
1. Exercise/work out more/daily
2. Watch even more sports: soccer, cricket, football, basketball, tennis, snooker, he'll even baseball
3. Try to watch more live sports from 2. At the events
4. Travel cheap - offseason & with miles. Cannot wait not being forced to pay an arm and a leg cos of school and work
5. Take care of body and soul
6. Meditation yoga massage
7. Maybe even sleep in a bit
8. Become a mentor. Could happen in various forums
9. Maybe even maintain a nice flower garden
10. Sudoku ? Chess? Gotta work out the mind
11. Reading books again
12. Driving range? Maybe even the course
13. Learn the guitar. Trying to start this soon lol
14. Bike rides
15. Swimming plus jacuzzi tubs
16. Happy hour plus über home
17....
Do you think I'm ready? Lol

Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
4 years into retirement and these are things that have consumed a lot of my time:
- Volunteer work, mostly with a Christian missionary
- On board of a retiree association from my former employer, involved in programs and issues of concern for retirees
- Church related ministries
- Go to Y at least 3 times a week
- Play golf 1 or 2 times a week
- Home improvements, first 2 years this consumed a lot of time but now running out of things to update
- Caring for my elderly mother (she has now passed)
- Some travel, most notably a trip to the Holy Land last year (Israel and Jordan). I am glad I went last year instead of this year.
The first 2 to 3 years of my retirement were really busy. It was almost like I was still working. The last year or so, things have slowed down and I need to get involved in some more activities. I can only indulge in leisure so much.
IMO, the most important thing in planning your retirement is to get involved in activities of interest to you.

I plan on continuing my many hobbies when I retire:
1. Woodworking
-continue to make new woodworking projects and give them to family members as Christmas gifts
-continue to maintain or remodel houses of family members
-learn a new skill each year. Last year was making ink pens and using Kokomo glass. This year is intarsia.
2. History
-continue to research the history of my hometown (I am already designated the town historian)
-continue on local museum Board of Directors
3. Writing
-have already written my own book, one chapter of the 2nd Bogleheads book, and 55 short story ebooks on investing
-have just starting writing short ebooks on local history
4. Genealogy
-I have researched and published 4 photo scrapbooks on our family's history
-continue with more research
5. Grandchildren
-the 1st one is due in July, should be fun
6. Financial Planning
-continue to act as financial advisor for many family members
-maybe take on some more non-family people as financial planning clients

Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
Travel is my number one thing to do in retirement. I plan to visit all possible countries before I die. I have visited all 50 U.S. states long time ago so domestic travels will not be important.
I do have a problem with my plan. My wife likes to stay at all inclusive resorts (vacation), but I like travel from places to places. We did one or two new countries per year because my teenager son did not want to go anywhere with us and we could not leave him at home. Fortunately, he just got his college admission letter last week. I have already planned to double our overseas travels starting this year (by setting aside money).

Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
1. Stay physically active for as long as possible
- Work out regularly
- Hike and bicycle in the summer
- Snowshoe and ski in the winter
2. Do more woodworking than I have time for now
- Build furniture for our home
- I'd like to find something small that I can build and sell at the local markets, jewelry boxes perhaps
3. Grow and raise more of our own food
- We'll have a big vegetable garden, and a couple greenhouses
- Raise chickens for eggs and meat
- Have a mini-cow for milk
4. There will be plenty of things to keep us busy around the property
- Cutting firewood and generally tending to the forest
- Snow removal
5. Volunteer
- Not sure what I'll do, but one thought is to volunteer at a local aviation museum and invention center (http://www.birdaviationmuseum.com/). I am an engineer, and have worked in aviation for the past 20 years or so, so there may
be a fit there.
6. Fish and hunt. Great trout, steelhead and kokanee salmon fishing in the area, and we'll able to hunt deer and turkey right on our property.
That's a start anyway. I don't think I"ll have any trouble keeping busy.

Sit on a beach reading my newspaper while enjoying wine and good coffee. Time for family and friends.

Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
Start cooking. Right now, I don't cook. I'm reading In Defense of Food, and he's got me convinced I need to stop eating processed food, start buying fresh vegetables and learn how to cook them. I plan to join a CSA this summer.
Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
Recently retired.
1. I go to the gym for 1+ hour daily which makes me feel so good (improvement in back pain and sense of well being)
2. Volunteer at a large Food Bank weekly and on the board of a Nicaraguan school and work/study program
3. Taking my turn serving on my condo association board as president (not fun but I feel better having volunteered to do my turn)
4. Cross country skiing now at least weekly, can't wait to start bicycling, hiking and kayaking when (if) New England ever warms up
5. Reading the newspaper, many books feeds my brain
6. Cooking for pleasure
7. Extra time and energy being supportive in practical ways to my young adult children
8. Socializing a lot more including hosting game nights and cooking together with friends
9. Travel: 2015 will include rafting the Salmon River in Idaho, a week on Martha's Vineyard, and a month in San Miguel de Allende enrolled in Spanish immersion classes

Doing whatever I want to do.How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
Retiree's wife: What are you going to do today?
Retiree: Nothing.
Retiree's wife: But that is what you did yesterday!
Retiree: Yes dear, but I didn't finish.
Now the truth, since 2005 retirement has been the best years of my life:
Backpacking (over a thousand miles one year) using lightweight equipment including a hammock, when the weather is good, because I can wait at home for a storm to pass, then go out for 4-5 days before the next one arrives. I head home, out of the mountains, when I see cirrus clouds.
Volunteering at the local National Forest Service office
Volunteering with a statewide trail maintenance group
Picking up roadside litter (because I can)
Taking a nap after lunch
Reading books cover to cover in one long day, since I don't have to go to bed on time in order to get up on time.
Seeing sunrises and sunsets because I have the time to look at them
Cooking is a hobby that I enjoy with the benefit of eating healthier than the rich foods at most restaurants
Cleaning up the kitchen afterwards, to be nice to Dear Wife
Hanging out with friends because we have time to visit
The theme of my retirement has been having the time to do what I like to do.
Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
How I spend my weekends, but everyday:
Upcoming weekend is a trip to Catalina for diving and exploring
Last weekend was a dive boat to Anacapa Island for 3x SCUBA dives (got certified last Dec to share my DG's passion)
Weekend before that was a road trip to SLC for skiing/snowboarding
Sometime before that was Joshua Tree climbing trip (lots of other times in late fall too)
Some surfing was done somewhere in there too
etc
Oh, but we'd be able to travel further and for longer

As mentioned a few times in other posts, I plan to setup and run more free clinics and orphanages in developing countries. See some patients on a part time basis when back in the US. I cannot imagine doing anything else with my life, it is simply what I was born to do. See my signature.

My father's identical twin, a surgeon, felt that way about the practice of medicine. It was a gift to him and those who depended on him. My town recently lost a beloved pediatrician in his 80s. I asked him once if he planned to retire, and he replied: "what, and give up the best job in the world?"obgyn65 wrote:As mentioned a few times in other posts, I plan to setup and run more free clinics and orphanages in developing countries. I get the FI part but not the RE part of FIRE.
Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
There is a tension between having a single pursuit and diversifying across several interests. A single pursuit enables one to mobilize all his energy and achieve significant results. But it may also destroy one if the access to the pursuit disappears. People who are unhappy in retirement are likely those who don't have diverse interests. As working forever may not be possible, it's optimal to retire early when there is still time and energy to do a variety of things. One of these things can still be the primary theme.TomatoTomahto wrote:My father's identical twin, a surgeon, felt that way about the practice of medicine. This logic applies even to physicians, as another BH thread attests.

Ok Victoria. Please let me add the following activities, when time permits : learning more about personal finance, switching from playing my classic guitar to my new electric guitar, and visiting my homeland in Europe. I am also a movie fan, would like to learn how to cook, as well as learn more about astrophysics, etc. and of course, keeping posting on my favorite website : the bogleheads forum. How does this sound?

Looks like I should add something more here: fishing, cooking, and eating fish; tasting street foods anywhere I go; playing slot machines at casinos. All these activities can be done myself. I also like playing cards with my friends if they will be there in retirement.

Re: How do you plan on spending your time during retirement?
I retired in 2009 at age 58. I spend my time differently now than what I had expected. This is what I am doing:
1. I was chosen to be the music director at my Church over a year ago. I am responsible for leading the music part of our 3 services each week.
2. I take voice and piano lessons originally from a local teacher but now using Skype with my younger son, who has BM and MM degrees in piano performance, as my teacher.
3. I am studying music theory through online college courses taken online -- I am taking these courses for credit.
4. I grow vegetables year round in our central Florida retirement community garden plot and in 28 earthboxes behind our house. I am in the gardens from 2 to 4 hours a day.
5, Do all the shopping with my wife as she doesn't drive.

As little as possible.
Actually, I work out 4-5 days a week; run the dog (a greyhound) on the beach; ride my bike; go out to eat lunch and shop with my wife; read free science fiction on the iPad; discover our new town and neighbors; travel. Hardest thing? Getting a designer to work with us to do renovations on our new home.

Get a lot of credit cards and live it up.
Get on some government cheese because I am entitled to.
Be late on all bills, especially mortgage and rent.
Take out home equity after doing a no cost refi with cash back.
Grow my own plants wherever permitted.
Scroll around campuses and self-audit a few afternoon classes at no cost.
Take out unsecured student loans.
