What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
I enjoy a good meal and will seek out restaurants which have been recommended by others. I'm a big fan of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. In fact, I've been to most of the restaurants Guy Fieri has recommended in my city. I will often go to his website to check out his restaurant recommendations when I'm traveling. Some of the food he has recommended has been really good while some has been alright.
My question is what's the best meal you've had at a restaurant? What was the meal, the restaurant, and where is it located (city, state)? As I've stated above I'm always looking for a good restaurant while traveling.
Though this restaurant is in a few places across the U.S., Del Frisco's Steakhouse is a favorite of mine. When I want to splurge, I get the 12oz Filet with Jalapeno Bacon Macaroni and Cheese. I'm traveling toward Indiana in a few weeks and have St. Elmo's Steakhouse as my next restaurant destination.

The house made Vegeburger at a restaurant called Ona near the Heceta Head lighthouse on the Oregon coast. I don't normally like veggie burgers, but this one was awesome.

It was a roasted duck at Four Seasons in NYC many years ago. When I went back to recreate the experience, it was good, but not as great as I remembered.
Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
I am Indian origin, living in CA now. The best Indian food, outside of India, that I have eaten is in this restaurant named "Sakoon".
Location: Mountainview downtown, CA 94041
Site: www.sakoonrestaurant.com
Cuisine: Indian
Price: Approx $40 for 2, including drinks. $15 weekend buffet.
Cons: Can get quite busy after 1pm for lunch.
I have waited as much as 1 hour for lunch weekend buffet once.
Dark interiors, probably too dark for my taste.

Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
The best meal I ever had was at a restaurant "La Remanance" in Lyons, France. Don't quote me on the name, I may have remembered it wrong. It was at an entirely different level than anything I've had before or since.
Lyons is an amazing place for food. Otherwise it's a fairly dreary city.

The best grand meal was at Charlie Trotter's in Chicago, in the restaurant's early years when Charlie was still obsessing over every detail. Most memorable was in 1992 somewhere in a maze of houses built on stilts over a tributary of the Mekong in Ho Chi Minh City. Three hours of all the fresh crab and cold 333 beer my friend and I could eat and drink. Total tab was around $15.
Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
Rack of lamb at a neighborhood restaurant DW and I stumbled on in Sidney many years ago during our only visit to Australia. My request for mint sauce conveyed to the chef resulted in one he whipped up just for us. My first ever request to congratulate a chef for an outstanding meal was rewarded by his visiting our table a few minutes later despite initial response that he was very busy. A once in a lifetime experience.

Japan is blessed with great food at all price levels. Would not be able to tell you the restaurants I've been to there, but most have been spectacular. I'very had Michelin star cuisine in Germany and France, but for the money, you can't beat Japan.John3754 wrote:Sushi Saito in Tokyo.

Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
Greetings,
The Aberdeen Barn in Williamsburg Va. The food is excellent, service excellent. They start you with a cheese tub accompanied with various crackers and biscuits. Then the salad with various greens nuts and berries. Excellent dressing regardless of your choice. I personally think their prime rib is "to die for" but the other entrees are also hard to beat. There are two sides and a nice variety of homemade rolls and a tub of butter.
For dessert I usually have some kind of "glop" mixture, I can't remember what it is called, but it tastes really good.
I have tried many restaurants in Williamsburg and don't care for any of the others.
As an aside, Busch gardens has the best "park food" I have ever eaten. These are the only two places I eat in Williamsburg anymore.
Regards,Paul

Lanta Seafood on Koh Lanta, Thailand. They had all the fresh catches of the day sitting on ice in the front of the restaurant. You went up after you ordered your drink, pointed out which fish you wanted and how you wanted it. My wife and I just got a bunch of different things and every dish was more delicious and flavorful than the previous.

I managed a project for a Bermuda client about 30 years ago that required me to take about a dozen business trips to Bermuda over a 3 year period. I ate at many restaurants all over the island and can honestly say I never had a bad meal. The food was consistently very good to excellent. I cannot recall the names of most of the restaurants, but 2 that were especially good that still exist are Tom Moore's Tavern and Portofinos.
Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
No single best, but some highlights:
- Fresh caught shrimp BBQ'd on the beach in Limbe, Cameroon. These were the 8" "Nigerian" shrimp which you won't see in the US. Delicious, but the government decided to put an offshore oil platform in the middle of the bay so the view is definitely diminished (if not the fishing).
- Roast duck from a little restaurant on an alley next to the main bus station in Taipei. Also Din Tai Fung for dumplings in Taipei. They inject broth into the dumpling so when you bite into it you get a squirt of rich liquid along with tasty pork (they are now operating in Southern California/Seattle as well but I haven't been to the locations here to see if they can pull off the same taste with U.S. sourced ingredients and the high labor costs here). Taipei has many great restaurants but helps to have a local who can help you find the best as they are often hidden away.
- For consistency in a tourist destination I definitely would give a shout out to Slightly North of Broad in Charleston, SC. http://www.mavericksouthernkitchens.com ... thofbroad/ There are many good restaurants in Charleston but every time I go back to SNOB I'm pleased with its intimate dining room and varied execution of low country favorites.

Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
When I'm in a gourmandizing place, I prefer to explore the markets to see what sells with the locals. E.g., in France I subsist on baguettes, cheese, and wine. Fine dining is lost on me, perhaps partly because I'm a vegetarian. All those spendy meals blur together. The restaurant meals I'd like to eat again are the mixed falafel platter from Ta'im in the West Village and the black bean torta from Torta Frontera at O'Hare. Sad? Not at all.

Peter Lugers Steakhouse - Brooklyn, New York. Hands down, the best steak I have ever eaten.gator15 wrote:I enjoy a good meal and will seek out restaurants which have been recommended by others. I enjoy reading Urbanspoon and chowhound to find good eats.
Memorable: http://www.viewmenu.com/beauregards-tha ... ref=google I think I had duck the first time. 2nd time only average. I'd eat there again, real close to a downtown hotel. About a mile from a nice small shoppe district.
Korean Place in State College PA, was the only gringo there. 2nd visit still good, but had a sense they ripped us off by including a tip not seen on initial bill. I'd go again.
Porn Shop Asian! A small asian place opened in my town, but it was avoided for years as there was a porn shop next door...many people raved about the place. I forget if we went while the porn shop was still open, it is now closed. Mom and Pop only employees, hard working, blend of asian elements. Can't be in a hurry, leave as friends. They make their own kimchee. Curry soup!
We aspire to go: http://www.saintjacquesfrenchcuisine.com/
I'm honored that a local politician said that two of the best five meals of his life have been at my house! We do many things so much better.

Fins & Tales Southbridge, MA. Don't think its on anyone's must visit list, we just stumbled on it because we didn't want pizza again. Braised lamb shank with roasted root veggies and smashed potatoes. It received extra credit because it was so unexpected.
Best steak would be Sanibel Steakhouse on Sanibel Island in FL in 2000. 38oz Porterhouse - side of mushrooms, onions, mashed potatoes...cream puffs for dessert. I could never eat that much again, even if i tried.

One meal that immediately comes to mind was my first experience with walleye. I am from Northeast Ohio, and thus know about the frenzy that this fish causes. I simply had to find out why some people were willing to risk fines and/or jail time over a fish (wildlife violations, etc.).
It was a borderline surreal experience.

I skip past all the fancy meals I've had in Napa Valley, LA, NYC, Paris, Kyoto, and go with the under $10 bowl of Honda Ramen (shoyu for those who want to know) on Tokyo Ramen St under Tokyo station.
Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
Several years ago we were in St. Louis and went to a neighborhood place on The Hill (Italian District). It was recommended to us. Just a nice neighborhood place. Midway thru the meal, we both looked at each other and said "this is the best meal ever". We picked up a cookbook, unfortunately it was loaned out and never returned, so i cannot recall the name of the place. Sorry.
Best hog dog - last Saturday my son took me to Fatso's Last Stand at 2258 W. Chicago in Chicago. Char hot dog and fresh cut blanched fries for $4.00. I have eaten at a number of hot dog stands in Chicago, this was the best. The fries were as good as it gets.
LaScarola at Grand and Halsted in Chicago is pretty darned good. Just a tad short of the unnamed St. Louis eatery on The Hill.

I went to every restaurant featured on "triple-D" in the Houston area and two others in Austin when I was living in Texas, all but one was disappointing. I'd be curious to know what criteria is used to choose the restaurants for the show.gator15 wrote: I'm a big fan of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. The best meal I've ever had is at Tucano's, a Brazilian churrascaria here in Utah. We rarely go out to dinner (literally one or twice a year), but we have never been disappointed there.

Seeger's back when it was in Atlanta may have been the best overall meal I've had. Of places still around Bachanalia is the most consistently great. But the steak I had at Rathbun's Steak House may have been the best, it was easily the best steak. Ribeye is hit or miss for me (it always seems like I'll have as many bad ribeyes as good, often why I get NY strip, seems to be more consistently great) and this one hit, just perfect.
Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
Technically the is not a restaurant but my husband and I got tickets to "Outstanding in the Field" this past summer. We went to a farm outside Madison, WI and had a meal in the open air, prepared by the executive chef of L'Etolie, Madison's premiere restaurant. It was one of the best experiences of my life so far and definitely the best meal.
Other favorites were at a restaurant in Venice on the Western side of town away from the tourist areas (I can dig up the name if anyone wants to know it, it was a fantastic gem) and fried scallops at some divey place outside of an IGA in Rainbow Beach, Australia.

If you are from Northeast Ohio and like walleye, you need to go to Benders restaurant in Canton and get the walleye there. My husband is from NE Ohio and whenever we go to visit his family, that's where we go.TerryDMillerMBA wrote:One meal that immediately comes to mind was my first experience with walleye. Benders is this beautiful historic restaurant--it's been in existence over 100 years. The building is so old that when you go into the entrance, you have to be careful because the step is worn down.
They are particularly well known for their walleye. You want to get it "Camp Kegel" style.

When I thought about it, I could not recall any specific meals that stood out based on the food, but could recall several that stood out because of the people I dined with. A couple of them were just at diners or the corner bar
Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
I don't have any one favorite, but here are a few places that are very special to me:gator15 wrote:I enjoy a good meal and will seek out restaurants which have been recommended by others. I'm a big fan of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
#1. Any restaurant in the Upper Delaware Valley (Bucks County, PA or Hunterdon County, NJ). Just about every town has some wonderful gourmet restaurant in an old, historic building (200+ years old) with a beautiful atmosphere. The menus are constantly changing. I used to live in that area, and in the seven years I was there, I can count on one hand the number of bad meals I had there. Virtually every meal I had was very good if not excellent, and this was true even with the low-end places. If you like diners, the diners in New Jersey are particularly good. My husband and I ate in the diners a lot when we were young and couldn't afford the fine dining restaurants. You could get anything from gourmet Italian to ethnic Jewish (e.g., matzah ball soup) to fresh seafood to plain old American food there.
#2. Courtney's Restaurant in Ridge, Md. This place is a true dive and in the middle of nowhere in Southern MD. They are known for their fish. The owner (Mr. Courtney) catches the fish himself. It doesn't get much better than that. Whenever my family comes to visit from Chicago, that's where they want to go. Just be sure you order FISH not crab. If you want Maryland crab, there are better restaurants in the area. BTW, somebody from "Washingtonian Magazine" interviewed a number of famous chefs in the Washington area and asked where they would want to eat their last meal. One of them said Courtney's!
#3. Duner's Restaurant in Charlottesville, Va. This place advertises "casual fine dining". From the outside, it looks like a dive, but the food is equivalent to what you would find at a fine dining restaurant. They change the menu every night. I found the place on the internet, and we were extremely impressed with the food (even the bread was home-made, and tasted absolutely out of this world). There are many fine dining restaurants in the Charlottesville area, and many are in old, historic buildings. However, we liked Duner's the best. That's the place we'd want to go back to.
#4. Lewnes Steakhouse in Annapolis, Md. Absolutely excellent if you like steakhouses. The atmosphere (in an old house) is nice, too.
Enjoy!

St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail sounds amazing right now.gator15 wrote: I'm traveling toward Indiana in a few weeks and have St. Elmo's Steakhouse as my next restaurant destination.
One of my favorite meals was at a little tapas restaurant on the beach on Costa Rica. I wish I could think of the name, but whenever we make it back to Costa Rica we will certainly visit.
Also - almost any restaurant in Charleston, SC - I'm a sucker for Southern comfort food and look forward to every meal when I'm there.

By all means, St. Elmo's is a once in a lifetime necessity. After that it's another steak joint. The famous sauce can now be found in the grocery store. The shrimp cocktail can be had at the restaurant or Harry and Izzy's nearby. One can also get it at the airport location of Harry and Izzy's. Some local recommendations...
Rook or Bluebeard just SE of downtown. A manageable walk from downtown on the Cultural Trail or a short cab ride. Cerulean if you want to stay downtown.
Libertine or Ball and Biscuit for cocktails.
If you're the bistro type - R Bistro on Mass Ave. never fails. Mesh and Black Market are by there too.
If you're a beer person and staying downtown Indy Brew Bus will take you to 4 breweries for a nominal fee. Pickup/Dropoff at your hotel.
For local fare, a tenderloin sandwich (always fried) with a slice of Sugar Cream Pie for dessert is highly recommended. Enjoy your trip.
Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
I'm a little easier to please. It's hard to beat home cooking but the best restaurant meal I've had recently was the meatloaf at a place called Churchill's Pub in Savannah.

Thanks for mentioning Tom Moore's Tavern - I remember it as Sir Thomas Moore's Inn. Hope it is the same one. Glad to hear it's still open. I hope it is still as good as I remember more than 30 years ago, BC. ^^ That place is awesome (was there in July).artiegene wrote:I'm a little easier to please. It's hard to beat home cooking but the best restaurant meal I've had recently was the meatloaf at a place called Churchill's Pub in Savannah.
I'm uncertain of my favorite. Probably a hole in the wall we found in Rome ... seven courses, and only about 40euros later we were beyond stuffed with some of the finest food we've eaten. My wife even went into "mama's" kitchen and padded around for a bit.
Another shout to several of the hot pot places in Chengdu and Chongqing. Potentially Kansas City Prime in Manayunk, PA (outside of Philly, and apparently now closed).

While it may not be the best meal I've had, the one that is freshest in my mind was enjoyed at Cole's Chop House in Napa, CA in April 2013.
My wife and I shared the crabmeat cocktail which is probably the best appetizer we have ever consumed. We had petite filet mignons as our entrees and they were both cooked to a perfect medium rare. We shared hash browns and asparagus which both lived up to their billing. We complemented our meals with a tasty glass of cabernet and finished by sharing a piece of flourless chocolate cake with raspberries and whipped cream. This was the first evening of a 13 night trip to California. We enjoyed many a good meal the rest of the trip but I look back on this one most fondly.

Ceviche prepared fresh in Carate, Costa Rica after surfing perfect waves for 3 hours with 100s of baby hammerhead sharks swimming around me.

Re: What is the best meal you've had at a restaurant?
Long ago, and far away (1971, Hurst Texas), I was young, dumb, and dead broke. My rent was paid, no job, but I was waiting on my last paycheck which was due in 7 days. So I sat in my apartment, drank lots of water, and waited. Like I said, I was not the sharpest tool in the shed. Anyway, the check came and I slowly walked 1 mile to the bank, then to the Dairy Queen next door.
I got a BeltBuster with cheese, a large fry, and a large coke. The best meal I ever had.

The best meals were at the Burger King (no longer there) located in The Presidio in San Francisco. It had fantastic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay from the dining room. The servicemen who lived on the base during it's final years really had a gem, it remained open for a few years after the former military base was transferred to the Presidio Trust. A private foundation took over the building and I'm sure they're still enjoying those great views. A close second would be the Taco Bell on the beach in Pacifica, California.

Sixteen in Chicago.
Although it was easily the best meal I've eaten, it's a terrible value. Nothing beats a great home-cooked meal.

Well it sure doesn't stop me!mochila wrote: Fine dining is lost on me, perhaps partly because I'm a vegetarian.
Probably the best restaurant meal I've had was so far removed from all the others that it's almost a different category of experience: The Catbird Seat, right here in Nashville.
It was a three-and-a-half-hour marathon of over a dozen courses, with wine and cocktail pairings, all chosen for you (take it or leave it!) and prepared right in front of your eyes as you sit at 20-seat u-shaped table surrounding the kitchen. The listing at the end of this article gives you an idea, although I went with a vegetarian option that was every bit as inventive.
Other memorable meals include:
- The Dish, Tucson, AZ. Not so much because of the meal itself, but because of the surroundings... you're basically in a liquor store.
- Orchids at Palm Court, Cincinnati, OH.
- The consistently wonderful Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas, NV. Although you can throw a rock and hit a great restaurant in that town these days.
- Any meal at a Viennese Heuriger. (After all, sauerkraut is vegetarian!)
- Best meal at a quote-unquote "vegetarian" restaurant would probably be Greens in San Francisco. Although I'm always down for Red Bamboo in NYC or The Chicago Diner in Chicago.
