For the boy: Trucks, balls, books, puzzles. I have 16 month old twin boys and those are their favorites. There are a lot of really cool wooden toys too, my kids love toys like the link below:

Cardboard boxes in wrapping paper for the kids and cash for the parents to spend on them - it gives the kids something they will play with and enjoy for as long as nearly any toy you buy and the parents something useful to put towards the kids actual needs all at the same cost to you.
