need a new home page [browser default page]
I have been using my.msn.com for years as a home page, and now they have changed it all around to where you must keep a lot of big distracting People-style photos on top in magazine style layout, no matter how you customize. I like to have hard news, markets and weather and I don't like a lot of photos. Personally I find text more pleasing to the eye than these giant splashes of color.

How about news.bing.com or news.google.com?
There is some customizable content. Not flashy.

Re: need a new home page
Mine is currently Google as the most common reason for me to open a new tab or window on its own (not from a link) is to search for something.
Re: need a new home page
I use my.yahoo.com. No photos. I customized it to show just a few sections: news, financial, sports. Each is in its own block, and has the top 7-8 items of the moment. That's it. It's a very clean page if you just want to see the main stories broken into categories.

A blank page loads quicker than any :-).
I'm not sure about your browser, but in firefox there's a box for google (or whoever you pick) on the upper right, so you can google search without ever loading the google page. But you do miss the doodles :-(.

I like a "blank" homepage, containing a search engine tool bar defaulted to Google. Simple, fast, always handy.

May like CNN.Com. Seems to meet your requirements.

CNN? [OT comment removed by admin LadyGeek] Guess you could have said MSNBC which is worse.
I like Google's News Home Page.

On google can you get the weather, s&p and the dow on the front page?
Re: need a new home page [browser default page]
I disagree about keeping it simple.
My go-to startup page is igHome; my wife uses NetVibes. Both do the same thing, allowing multiple RSS feeds and email preview. Put everything in front of you. Add interesting sites over time, and eliminate disappointing ones. Have multiple tabs (finance, news, etc.). You'll be happier "evolving" to the best desktop.

Re: need a new home page [browser default page]
Since 1996 I've made my own home page. It isn't much more than a page of links. The page can be edited with any text editor. The page can reside on your computer hard drive, or you can upload it to a website and use it on multiple computers. I found it nice to use when I am away from home on someone else's computer. This may be more work than you want, but I found it handy.
I made a few styles of my homepage for various screen width sizes and offer them to anyone that is interested. The files you need are in a small zipped file. Here is the link:

Re: need a new home page [browser default page]
Why limit to a single page. I have mine setup to open three different tabs as the home page (using firefox):
1) my.yahoo.com (have customized this view)
2) my favorite news site (not mentioning site name to keep folks from again veering OT )
3) a work-related site I have
...based upon the addiction I am starting to develop for this forum...may add this page as a 4th tab.

Re: need a new home page [browser default page]
I got fed up with Yahoo's antics awhile back and couldn't find anything I like very much. I eventually switched to NPR.org which is mostly news. If I want weather I just type that into the search box and pull it up separately.

Startpage is intriguing. How does it compare to Duck Duck Go?Raymond wrote:StartPage

Thank You love looking at the market and weather only all at the top of the page. Even got the radar up there.

You're welcome. McCharley had also recommended it, in the post right above mine.rec7 wrote:Thank You love looking at the market and weather only all at the top of the page. Even got the radar up there.

Probably more information stuffed onto one page than you'll find anywhere. Much more for those who prefer text than fancy shmancy.

+1 for StartPage
Startpage acts as a proxy for Google so your searches are anonymous ( to Google anyway ).
