Chess.com is The Bomb

Post by TravelforFun »

I've been using the Internet since 1993 but just recently discovered chess.com. Wonderful website as it would rank you and let you play against equal-ranked players from all over the world. Any boglehead plays chess on that site?

Haven't played in 10-15 years, but it was/is a lot of fun. Maybe it's time to try it again.

Magnus Carlsen was talking about how he plays there under fake names on reddit the other day. Chess.com is an excellent site.

I prefer the Free Internet Chess Server. It's far less commercial.

I used FICS until the website went down for what literally seemed like months last year. Now I prefer Chess.com, as you can play from any browser and it's always up.

steve_14: The best way to use FICS is not through the website. Download eBoard or BabasChess or similar. You can set up macros for commonly-used operations (seek just the type of games you enjoy, rematch, say thank you for the game, etc.), and the interface is spartan and beautiful.

FICS never went down, even when their website was down, so if you had your own board software you wouldn't have experienced an outage.

Yes, I'm a fairly regular blitz player there. It's a great site.

And that's why it's terrible compared to chess.com
I love how chess.com is cross device compatible,
and I can export my game history directly into the forums for analysis..
A pro quality tool, not some amateur website slappped together by chess hacks.

We've come a long way since chess-by-mail.

I play on my phone. Typically blitz games, 5 minutes per player with 29 second time limit per move.

This site is great. The iphone app is even better IMO. Love playing people so much more than computers... can play a quick blitz game any time I've got time to kill.
