Looking for Good Free Win 7 File Manager

Post by klneutral »

Can anyone recommend a good, but free, file manager? Windows Explorer just does not always cut it for me.

In particular, I would like to be able to list all files in all folders on a particular drive in order of size and display the file size. Then to be able to delete some of the largest ones to free some space.

Other nice features might be the ability to show two windows at the same time, to shred files, and to change file timestamps.

Total Commander, I've used it for years. The free version requires you to make a number selection when launched, however it is fully functional.

If you only occasionally need to sort the files by size, you can download WinDirStat for free and run it whenever you want to see where your space is going.

You can do this in Windows Explorer using the "size:" criterion in the search field.

"size:gigantic" = files greater than 128MB
"size:huge" = files greater than 16MB, but less than 128MB
"size:large" = files greater than 1MB, but less than 16MB

After the search results are displayed, you can sort the results by size.

I use a free utility called Everything from voidtools.com. It also allows files and folders to be excluded, and many options. A list of files meeting the criteria can be created. It is small and fast since it creates a database of the files. Works for me.

RTFM for Win Explorer.
Do a file search and sort by size.
